After finishing a US run with Neko Case late last year, Deer Tick completed a three week European tour - upon their return to the US on Dec. 13 the band entered the studio to put the finishing touches on its as-yet-untitled third album, which will be released in the first half of this year. [...]
Best Coast's Bobb Bruno & Bethany Cosentino Hello everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Far too many exceptional shows last week including last night's NO CANCER! Benefit show with No Age , Vivian Girls , Best Coast , Graham Forest , Darker My Love and more. I do believe Bethany from Best Coast 's performance as one of their most entertaining yet. [...]

There were a lot of mammals — of the stuffed variety and of the soggy variety — at the Natural History Museum on Friday night. The occasion was the February installment of the museum's First Fridays , and along with the event's normal fare of fossils, exhibits, tours, discussions and DJs, there were sets from two buzzy indie bands, NYC's Yeasayer and L.A. trio Warpaint . A huge crowd braved the rain to heap adulation [above] on the bands, and photographer Jeff Koga braved the crowd to send along this gallery. [Next [...]
Last year was an exciting one for Rhode Island's Deer Tick , who toured the U.S. alongside Neko Case in support of their summer sophomore release Born On Flag Day , only to release its follow-up, More Fuel For The Fire EP, that December. And for 2010, Deer Tick shows no sign of stopping, as the band prepares to embark on an epic U.S. tour this spring, which includes a stop at Coachella ! Rumor has it that Deer Tick will also be releasing their currently untitled third effort sometime in [...]

I am pretty late on this one and for that I apologize. I was supposed to give these away back in December but life got crazy, the discs got buried in my computer room and next thing you know I'd plum forgotten about 'em. Then, the other day I was cleaning up said computer room so I could put my beer fermenting cooler in it and I found them. That leads us up the now, where, as late as it may be, I am gonna give them away to y'all. According to Virgil, he was inspired by a [...]

Michael Palmieri When I wrote up Sharon Van Etten's debut album Because I Was In Love back in October , I felt a bit bad about giving it just a passing mention as I liked it more than just a sentence or two might have implied. But at the time my web hosting was self-destructing and I wanted to get something out there before her local appearance opening for Rain Machine , so a cursory mention it was. But with there seeming to be even [...]

Raspy folk rockers Deer Tick are stopping by the Jackpot in Lawrence on April 11, accompanied by saucy garage-country girl group Those Darlins. You'll remember Deer Tick from Jenny Lewis' show las... Continue reading "Incoming: Deer Tick and Those Darlins " >
Here's Bradford Cox as Atlas Sound doing his thing Jan. 8 at the Natural History Museum — all 75 minutes of it. Cox was the first headliner of 2010 in the First Fridays series , which continues this week with music from Yeasayer and Warpaint and discussions with Caltech professor Dr. Nathan S. Lewis titled "Where in the World Will Our Energy Come From?" Advance tickets for this week's event have sold out; there will be some at the door. If you're of a mind to mix music and education, the [...]

I first came across Lake Clear, New York artist JBM (Jesse Marchant) via his Daytrotter session , where the acoustic finger-picking of "Years/Cleo's Song" immediately sounded to me like something that should be artfully placed in a Woodshed Films /Malloy brothers surfing film, replete with dappled sunlight and crystalline water. As I dug into his catalog, I discovered not only a heartbreakingly earnest voice (which on the "From Me To You" track sounds like my favorite eras of sad-bastard Ryan Adams) but a muted melancholy that permeates his music, [...]
If you've read this blog for any length of time at all you know that I am a huge fan of Deer Tick . Their brand of grunge-country is dirty and in your face. John McCauley's voice is raspier than hell, but it just adds to the grit and raw emotion attached to every song. Don't let the grunge-country description fool you though, they can write a love song like no-body's business. I missed John playing with Those Darlins (he's engaged to Nikki) when they filled [...]

I don't even know how to describe the epic proportion of Deer Tick 's upcoming tour. The band kick things off in March, and they maintain a pretty constant schedule of playing shows until things wrap up on May 15 at Terminal 5 in New York City, where they will share the bill with Dr. Dog . Check out the full list of tour dates after the jump. Deer Tick tour dates: Dates marked * w/ Dr. Dog Dates marked # w/ Those Darlins Dates [...]

We've been wondering when the folks at South by Southwest were going to unveil the list of bands taking part in this year's soiree. Sure enough, we received a press release from SXSW announcing a partial band list. Culled from 10,000 applications, the list features an assortment of acts from around the world. Have a look below and let us know which bands you are dying to see. The SXSW Day Stage also in the Austin Convention Center, presented by SESAC, will be partnering with six great radio stations from [...]
I've been spending a lot of time in Manchester lately and over the course my visits, I've been to a few great gigs including Rodrigo Y Gabriela, The Pogues and Deer Tick. But on Friday night we decided we would take in a couple of local bands. My girlfriend's friend James Kelly was playing at an unsigned night at Dry...
Monday, February 1, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: Tonight I'm joining up with some people from work and heading down to the Austin Chronicle/Grounded In Music's first ever Mind Over Music trivia competition. It'll probably be pretty difficult, but my guess is that it will also be equally fun. Anyone else out there have a team? Sorry for no podcast this weekend. As I tweeted, my PC was having a variety of issues (not even sure if it's fixed now) and I just couldn't get it done. [...]
John Thornley's Monday night outing at Solly's, Thornley & Friends, celebrates its one year anniversary this coming Monday night (2/1) and it's not only spawned a fine evening of spontaneous music in its lifetime, but a brand new collaborative whose track streams below. John gives us the back-story: "So this is a little collaboration between John & Paul Thornley, Matthew Hemerlein, and Ryan Mitchell called The Four Horsemen. We play mainly guitar, ukelele, banjo, violin, mandolin and whatever else we can [...]
Because life's too short to sit through mediocre music when it's 105 degrees outside, I'm gonna quickly skip through some stuff here... When one listens to the songs on Aeroplane 's Myspace, one asks themselves... does one really need to hear Doves or Robbie Williams remixed in an '80s Disco style? No, one doesn't really... And if the band name Deer Tick isn't enough to turn one away, surely the lead singer that sounds like the love child of Bob Dylan and Sonny Bono will do the trick... [...]
