This just popped up on the calendar: next Tuesday, February 16, Atlas Sound will be performing at Holocene. The solo-ish project of Deerhunter's Bradford Cox, it appears to be the only show on the horizon for Atlas Sound, which leads me to suspect that Cox (who's no stranger to the Portland music scene, naming Privacy's Songs [Marriage Records] his favorite album of 2009) just hanging out in Portland for a while and quickly decided to throw together a show while he's here. At any rate, a nice surprise this morning; White Rainbow opens. [...]

Out now on Patient Sounds words : Jamie Milton You enter from one side of ' M. Pyres & New Past Tense' and you come out of a completely different end, into an unrecognisable landscape compared to the one you came from. Such is the contrast between opener and closer, both titled ' Gravity Deluxe' but with different, bracketed sub-titles to help differentiate the two. The first is a serene, Grizzly Bear -esque opener of huggable reverb and soft, colliding [...]

Just saw this on the Crocodile 's facebook page. Sounds pretty cool and it looks like you can pick up free passes at both Easy Street locations. Or by listening to The End; which...why would you do that, again? The 2009 records from both Atlas Sound (about who I'm genuinely surprised at his inclusion here) and Fresh Espresso made my Favorites lists of last year. They good. More recently, I've been pleasantly pleased with Surfer Blood 's Astro Coast. It's high-energy Floridian power-rock with brit-pop and pop-punk tendencies that recalls both Weezer [...]
Director Danny Clinch recently shot a live black and white noir video for Spoon 's new single "Written in Reverse," from the band's recently released Transference LP. Britt Daniel sounds a little more distraught here than he did on Conan O'Brien 's Tonight Show finale , coming off a little more raw and forward than before. The group is currently on the European leg of their tour, but will be hitting up the Southeastern States later this month. Local fans can catch the band with [...]

Link: http://stereogum.com/archives/ photo/atlas_soundmemory_tapes_ bell_house_brooklyn_2310_11279 1.html Bradford Cox of the hit bands 'Atlas Sound' and 'The Deerhunter, alone in the forest' played what seems to be an acoustic set. In order to move away from the traditional 'acoustic guitar bro' vibe, you can see that he utilized a 'sick pedal board', loaded with tons of crazy effects. In an effort to further differentiate his on-stage brand, he wore a sillie winter hat. Wearing a harmonica also makes him seem like a 'conceptual Bob Dylan.' [...]
"Written In Reverse" Music Video Spoon 's first single off Transference now has a music video. Instead of using the studio cut for "Written In Reverse", the band opted to use a live recording that gives the video a truer and more realistic feel to it. Capturing Spoon's energy and swagger, this music video works on so many levels, and excites me for the two Seattle gigs later this spring. Stream :: Spoon's new album Transference here . [...]
The Strange Boys produced one of my favorite releases of 2009, their debut album And Girls Club, and were kind enough to perform at the Covert day party during SXSW. Since then, they have gone on to play some festivals around the US, take a tour of the UK, sign with Rough Trade Records, and even add a couple of new band members . They also wasted no time getting to work on their sophomore album, Be Brave, which will be released later this month via In The Red / Rough Trade . Singer/guitarist Ryan Sambol explains the [...]

Last night at NYU, Bradford Cox brought his other musical project, Atlas Sound , out to play. Surprisingly, given the complexity of some of the Atlas Sound recorded material, Cox appeared solo, accompanied by an acoustic guitar, a harmonica, and a massive board of guitar pedals. Those pedals are what would largely define the show: Cox used them with expert precision, and through the use of effects, delays, and samplers managed to create a sound that was layered, diverse, and intricate. The effects also [...]
We like watching bands, right? Of course we do. Why else do you slave away at the computer, boiling your eyes in digital lights, all for line ups or tour dates? It's a passion. Watching a band live is partly what keeps us sane in this less than sane world. That's why you'll probably enjoy Spoon's new video. See what I did there? That's a transition. "Written In Reverse" might be one of the better songs off of Spoon 's latest album, Transference . It's rough, it's edgy, and it's [...]
Spoon is back with a new music video for their single "Written In Reverse" off their newest album Transference. The band has teamed up with Deerhunter and Micachu & The Shapes to play at the Fox Theater in Oakland before...

[photos taken for nyctaper by Kate Ehle - more here ] Bradford Cox struggled several times throughout the Atlas Sound show last night at Bell House with his equipment, but by the end of show made this joking/offhand remark that was abundantly true - "I don't need the f'ing looper thing". While the basic premise of Atlas Sound has always been Bradford and his various looping and other effects as accompaniment to his guitar and vocals, what became clear last night was that he doesn't need the [...]

I tried on Deerhunter for size because I have tickets to see them with Spoon and Strange Boys in March, and they fit. This trying-on also caused me to intensely long for the ability to take Bradford Cox into my arms and carry him everywhere. Here's why I fell in love with Deerhunter: Alex showed me this video on Pitchfork, which follows Bradford Cox around 2008's Pitchfork Festival. Guest stars include King Khan, High Places, Britt Daniel, and the late Jay Reatard. It's seriously the most hilarious and uplifting video I've seen since Will Ferrell's Talladega Nights: [...]

words & photos by Dominick Mastrangelo "I had this all planned out," said Atlas Sound 's Bradford Cox, "This was going to be a mind-blowing second song." Cox battled technical issues with one of his loop machines throughout his sold out show at the Bell House in Brooklyn , dropping it on the stage several times to get it to work. Through it all, the Deerhunter frontman handled the technical difficulties with grace, humor and self-deprecating wit. Once [...]

I believe I read somewhere that 2,000 people showed up to the parking lot at Waterloo Records in Austin to celebrate the release of "Transference" a couple of weeks ago. I'm looking forward to their two night stint here in town. I would've been happy with just two nights of Spoon . But, they got all fancy on us and added Deerhunter and Micachu and the Shapes to the bill. No complaints on this end. Spoon-Jonathan Fisk [mp3] [...]

New York's Liars are getting set to release their new album, Sisterworld on March 8. In an interesting twist, they will be including a bonus CD with the release, that sees tracks from the album reworked from the likes of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Melvins, TV On The Radio, Suicide, Deerhunter, and more. The band last released their self titled album in 2007, and It Fit When I Was a Kid in 2006.

In search of an authentic aesthetic/genre/content-stream /sample pool of art Indie is/was/has been/will never be dead. I feel like 'everything that needs to be said about indie music has been said', and now modern music journalists are 'on cruise control', writing puff pieces and 'insightful' blurbs that make obvious conclusions about the 'meaningless genre of indie music.' Sort of like when 'hipster' articles were 'big' between 2k6-2k11. Music journalists and blog blurbers are important tastemakers, introducing users/consumers to new content/bands/artists. It seems like we/'the altosphere' has hit a [...]

Sleepy Sun - "New Age" Sleepy Sun's 2009 debut, Embrace , is finally picking up the traction it deserves. The San Francisco natives play hazey, psych-rock tunes that fans of Deerhunter should check out.
