Down to the Tiger in Long Eaton to see Len Graham ... what struck me overall on this excellent gig was the infinite flexibility of the human voice. Tonight I encountered a battery of solo singers, one story teller and one duo, stripped of accompaniment, delivering an eclectic variety of material from the traditions of the British Isles/Ireland and beyond. Which might, to a casual observer, seem somewhat arid – but believe me it was not. The diversity of songs was matched by the wide tonal ranges of the voices, tonight predominantly male but [...]

The St Jeromes Laneway Festival has always held a special place in YATM's heart... especially the Melbourne event.. The central business district of Melbourne Australia is a treasure trove of little laneways covered in street art, hole in the wall bars, cafes and one of our favourite places to photograph. Many a time whilst wandering we have come across random gigs, one that stands out was a rocking set we happened across in AC/DC lane during the busy lunch hour of the business day, it was all going on... We here at YATM just love music played [...]
This time I've compiled songs about roads, by such artists and bands as Frank Turner, Neil Young, Portishead,... Deze keer krijg je een compilatie met nummers voor on the road (of althans over die road )... The road - Frank Turner Jordan is a hard road to travel - The Sacred Shakers Cohawkin road - [...]

![Past Blast Volume 1, Chapter 9: The Walkmen / Calla - split - Troubleman Unlimited [2002]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1996031_lg.jpg)
With all that's happened since 2002 seems like a HELL of a long time ago. I'm not going to go into the reasons the world was different then, but I will say this: Things were a bit more innocent, a bit more ... hopeful. Come to think of it, I was a bit more innocent and hopeful then, too. I didn't know The Walkmen from Adam either; thank god I finally discovered them or my life might have taken a different course. Their split with [...]
![V/A - Dark Was The Night [compilation] 3XLP - Red Hot](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1921966_lg.jpg)
Dark Was the Night , a comp featuring a who's who of indie talent, was a no-brainer purchase for me. The Books? Grizzly Bear (playing on a ton of tracks no less)? Sufjan Stevens , Blonde Redhead, Riceboy Sleeps, Iron & Wine and Bon Iver ? Yeasayer, Yo La Tengo, Cat Power, Andrew Bird? Conor Oberst ? Ok, I'll let that go ... Besides, that's not even the whole listing; it would take me the rest of tonight [...]

This mix has died. This last song, a fantastic cover of Nick Drake's "Cello Song", is from the compilation curated by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National entitled Dark Was The Night . A total of 32 exclusive tracks were gathered for this years edition which benefits the Red Hot Organization. It'll be available as a double cd/triple vinyl/download on February 16th and is loaded with great indie acts such as, oh hell, here's the whole line-up: (find links to buy the album here [...]

' Dark Was The Night ' is a double compilation in support of the Red Hot Organization - an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS. If you take away the obvious reason for buying this album and concentrate on the actual music, you come away with a decent round up of the current of cream of the US indie/alt scence. A 31 track album is always going to vary in quality but contributions from Dirty Projectors with David Byrne, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Kronos Quartet, Blonde Redhead + Devastations and Bon Iver easily [...]

This week I got a great album called Dark Was The Night. I was actually looking on iTunes for the new War Child Heroes album but after hearing a few tracks I'm not sure I want to buy it just because it is a charity record. Dark Was The Night is the latest compilation released to support The Red Hot Organisation and features loads of great artists. I haven't absorbed all of it yet but the Feist/Ben Gibbard duet of Train Song is excellent and the ten minute odyssey of You Are The Blood by Sufjan [...]

NYC's Blonde Redhead & Devastations hook up for "When The Road Runs Out" another stellar track off the record of the year contender Dark Was The Night . Baltimore' lo-fi shoegazers Beach House covered Queens's "Play The Game" for the comp, but was left off so check their myspace for a listen.

Dark Was The Night Created raise funda and awareness for an AIDS charity (The Red Hot Organization) Dark Was The Night's cast list reads like a Who's Who of (mainly) North American independent music. Fortunately all this talent hasn't been assembled with nothing more than good intentions, for DWTN is absolutely dripping with some of the finest songs to be released this year, everyone a recording that's exclusive to this release. Opener Knotty Pine [...]

mp3: the new pornographers - hey, snow white [link removed by request] (here, you can stream it now) you may have heard of this dark was the night compilation... produced by aaron and bryce dessner of the national to benefit the red hot organization ... it's got 31 exclusive tracks from an amazing collection of artists... including arcade fire, spoon, sufjan stevens, bon iver, yo la tengo + many more... and several interesting collaborations, like david byrne and the dirty projectors, feist and grizzly bear, blonde redhead and devastations, and [...]
Best compilation ever. Sorry Cera and Braff...but it's even better than the Juno and Garden State soundtracks 40-fold. I know, I know, many of you thought the only good things this February are the release of the 3-D Jonas Brothers concert coming to an IMAX in your neighborhood and Miley Cyrus & Taylor Swift performing at the Grammys. But to soothe your soul the folks at the Red Hot Organization , an international charity dedicated to raising money and awareness for HIV and AIDS through popular culture, have released a token indie dream mix for the ages. [...]

Dark Was The Night will be released on February 17th, 2009. It's comprised of 31 exclusive tracks and it will be available as a double cd/triple vinyl/download and will benefit the Red Hot Organization – an international charity dedicated to raising money and awareness for HIV and AIDS through popular culture. They are the people responsible for albums including No Alternative, Red Hot and Blue and many more, and this is their 20th year, and this is the 20th release! DARK [...]
This rather amazing 31 track compilation is a must-have for anyone interested in any of the featured artists not because they feature but because the standard of songwriting is so high that it exceeds most other charity compilations (AIDS charity Red Hot - A good cause too right?). All and sundry culled from North American alternative and indie music is present including: The National, Feist, Grizzly Bear, Sufjan, The Books, Yeasayer, My Brightest Diamond, Iron and Wine, Spoon, Arcade Fire, Dirty Projectors, David Byrne, Bon Iver, Beirut, Cat Power, Kevin Drew and on and on.. Ridiculous line-up. The album is [...]

Dark was the Night , out tomorrow, marks the twentieth release for the Red Hot Organization , "an international charity dedicated to raising money and awareness for HIV and AIDS through popular culture". Not just another compilation, it features 31 never-before-released tracks or covers by approximately 40 indie artists (see list below). I know what you're thinking --there's no way you could like all those songs or all those artists, but to that I say it was produced by The National 's Aaron and Bryce Dessner for continuity. Listen to it in [...]
