With the release of major-label debut What Will We Be (Warner Bros.), Devendra Banhart proves once again he has the potential to be one of his generation's major players. His voice, with its careening vibrato and fuse-blowing intensity, sounds something like Marc Bolan's, but his repertoire may be more all over the map than anyone [...]
Paste interviews David Rawlings about his debut solo album, A Friend of a Friend . Paste: You cover some songs on this record—including a medley of "Method Acting" by Bright Eyes and "Cortez the Killer" by Neil Young. How did that come to be? Rawlings: A couple years ago, at the end of '07, Conor [Oberst] called me and asked me if I would come play guitar with Bright Eyes because Mike Mogis was producing a record and it was running on, and they [...]

Colorado's Monolith Festival is in trouble. Organizers of the three-year-old event, plagued the past two years by fractious Rocky Mountain weather, told fans in an e-mail "the future of the festival is very grim," and that they have "been unable to secure any options" that dig the fest out of its financial hole. Included was a plea for potential buyers/investors. [Full text of the letter after the jump.] Meanwhile, Bonnaroo announced its ninth annual event will be held June 10-13, 2010, near Manchester, Tenn. Tickets go on sale at noon Nov. 27. Meanwhile, only 148 days [...]

The past couple of weeks have brought about some great remixes from some great acts. I haven't been able to keep up on them through the show and sometimes a single track doesn't feel like enough to warrant its own post so here are a handful of the more interesting remixes that have made their way to the inbox... Eli Escobar - Glass House (XXXChange's Yoga Mom In A Blender Mix) Basement Jaxx - Raindrops (Joker & Ginz Remix) Fever Ray - When I Grow Up (Scuba's High [...]

photos by Tim Griffin Tim and I stopped by the Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros show at Music Hall of Williamsburg last time they were in town (8/30). I was especially curious to see what all the fuss was about. The show, much like the two Ed (aka Alex Ebert of Ima Robot) is playing/played in NYC this week, sold out well in advance. I left the show with mixed feelings. It was a while ago, [...]

It's Wednesday. Hence, the "it's hump day" caption! For those of you that are unfamiliar with the phrase it just means we are getting over the middle of the week, and are halfway to it being over. This week has not been a great one. College is basically being a royal pain in the ass right now. My classes right now are pretty dull, and I had a hard time getting anything good for next year. I feel like with my current selection of courses, I am just going through the motions. Like a mindless troll just going [...]

Featuring a killer lineup of interviewees (Fenriz, Hellhammer, Frost, Abbath, Harmony Korine, and even the elusive and now free [...]

Outdoor Miners - "Turn You Into Glue" It's a bit late to be making additions to my list of melancholy summer jams, so this will just have to settle for being a charming and bittersweet pop tune. Here's a couple others: Irma Thomas - "Cry On" Phoenix - "Rome" (Neighbors Remix w/Devendra Banhart) ****
