A short note to Ronnie James Dio and his wife (and manager) Wendy : Dear Mr. and Mrs. Dio, First, Ronnie, I heard you've been undergoing treatment for stomach cancer. Let me wish you the best in this battle, and that you bounce back quickly so you can tour in support of that "Heaven and Hell" DVD. Secondly, and the reason for this short note, is I'd like to ask you a favor, aging blogger to veteran rocker: Could you please [...]

after an intended-to-be-short-hiatus, we're back. almost apologies to all the unanswered emails. drag was right. anyways, dios are also back and they're tripping harder than ever. with their third record 'we are dios'--out on buddyhead --they've found their sound as the missing link between the beach boys and grandaddy . maybe there is something in the water out there in hawthorne . maybe not. either way, this is some outta sight rock and/or roll of the psychedelic variety . starting right where 'dios (malos)' left off, [...]

After an abrupt cymbal crash that opens Hawthorne, CA foursome Dios ' née Dios (Malos), new namesake album, the sound fizzles out into a swirling drone of reverb and serenity. The sound finds a low-point groove and Joel Morales sings alcohol and dumb decision go hand and hand when they're around…epileptic tunnel vision, my body hit the ground supported by a Beach Boys harmony and a through-the-rabbit-hole lead up as the song paces itself for the segue into the group's third album of progged-out, rainy-day songs that drift through a seaside carnival-like haze. Most tracks [...]

i'll be better at kissin' when my teeth are all missin' ♫ Dios - Puttin It Down Dios, who for legal reasons go by Dios Malos, just dropped two free songs on Buddyhead's record label and I have been digging "Puttin It Down." Dios are one of those bands I have always heard about but never heard their music but this is pretty fresh. Lo-fi, catchy, and great lyrics that somehow seem appropriate for this new year. Their third LP is coming soon on Buddyhead and although I have yet to [...]

DOWNLOAD: Dios - "4th Quarter Single" Cali rockers Dios (Malos) sound like the Beach Boys raised on cheap beer, kind bud and crushing cynicism. -Village Voice Hailing from Hawthorne, CA - home of the Beach Boys - Dios' sound is a product of their environment. Hawthorne has slowly devolved into its current chaotic blend of race riot aftermath, shuttered malls, and used car lots. Smog, graffiti and strip malls have replaced the surf, orange groves, and beach bonfires of the Beach Boys' [...]

Hawthorne-bred psych-pop quartet Dios [pictured at Lobsterfest] — who've reverted back to their original name after spending some time as Dios (Malos) — are whetting our appetites for the release next year of its third album, "We Are Dios," through Buddyhead. Their holiday-season giveaway, the single "I Feel Finite" b/w "Puttin It Down," does that and more. What it won't do — the A-side, anyway — is quash the Beach Boys comparisons that the band resisted early on. Still, the cool harmonies and quirky countermelodies conspire to give you the feeling the foursome has a good thing going. [...]

I have been meaning to post this for like weeks and weeks now- don't know why it kept slipping my mind. Maybe it's the contact buzz I get from listening to these guys that's fogging my brain over or something. ANYWAY. Hopefully, you caught that longtime Catbird favorites Dios are back on the scene, courtesy of the mighty Buddyhead , and plus also, they've dropped the "(malos)," so take that, Ron James (watch, he'll probably sue them). I noted [...]

Here's one that's long overdue — Dios (they've thankfully reverted to their original name after spending time as Dios Malos) soon will release their third album, "We Are Dios," via the mellow fellows at Buddyhead Records. I've had the unfinished mixes for a while, and they're gorgeous — a realization of the trippy psychedelia and lovingly fractured pop the band imagined way back when . ||| Download: "Stare at Wheel" [e-mail required] ||| Live: Dios performs at 5 p.m. Saturday at Lobsterfest at [...]

" [Dios member] Morales says that, even after the [2004] letter, he was still opposed to changing the band name [from Dios to something else], but went with Dios (Malos) after a long, arduous process in which Dio's lawyers shot down many proposed alternatives. "I thought we should've used the silliness of the whole thing to get our name out more, maybe not even change the name at all and let him sue us," says Morales. "It would've been hilarious and would've been a good story. But there were too many [wimps] in Camp Dios at the time, so no [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive When the Southern California stoner band Dios changed their name to Dios (Malos) back in 2004, it wasn't because they were looking something different. Nor did they mean any ill will towards god or to say that gods are bad, as the Spanish interpretation of that name may imply (technically "dios malos" translates into a singular "god" and a plural "bad"). In fact, they wouldn't have changed their name at all if it weren't for meddling metal man Ronnie James Dio , who had his lawyers [...]

Hawthorne, California's finest purveyors of pan-fried guitar pop, Dios Malos , recently recorded a session for Daytrotter that includes a sweet Wings cover, some rousing renditions of Dios classics (they do exist) and a song called "In Control of the OJ" from their upcoming album, due soon on the recently resurrected Buddyhead Records.

The show calendar overfloweth: The Dead Weather's gnarly blues-rock sounds exactly like what you'd expect, considering the players in the side project — Jack White (White Stripes), Alison Mosshart (the Kills), Jack Lawrence (the Raconteurs) and Dean Fertita. [Stream: "Treat Me Like Your Mother." ] Their debut, "Horehound," is out July 14, and quartet makes its L.A. debut tonight at the Roxy for a sold-out show. (They're back in SoCal on Aug. 25 (Wiltern), 27 (Glass House) and 29 (San Diego Street Scene). ... There are some other big deals in town tonight too — the [...]

It takes all of about three seconds for Nurses - "Caterpillar Playground" to work its charm - that little bit of carefree whistling is enough to turn a curmudgeony old man into a flower-picking child again. Not that the track rides a flat emotional level - it starts at with the line "Say something wonderful / say something horrible" and continues to chase down the same sort of aesthetic, like a child who doesn't understand complexity but says profound things on accident anyway. This whole track is demure, even bashful, so that everything from vocals to [...]
