MP3: Sparks - "Sherlock Holmes" MP3: The Dirtbombs - "Sherlock Holmes" Dick Colford, at 8 years old, and Walter Hannigan, at 8-and-a-half years old, were life-long enemies. Dick Colford, Dickie to his mother and teachers, was short, with his head stretched up he would just press against the flexy membrane of 4' tall. Dickie wore penny-loafers and ugly sweaters and jeans with an elastic waistband. He had no television or video games, he had only the radio and his thousand-piece puzzles [...]

King's Lead Hat , another Brian Eno vocal classic is an anagram for 'Talking Heads'. Not only was Brian obsessed with what was then these new New Wave upstarts, he would later go on to produce them as well and in the process dragging lead head David Byrne away for the sublime My Life in The Bush of Ghosts (much to the others chagrin.) Starting off with my personal fave [...]

Former Mordred lead singer Scott Holderby teamed up with Avengers guitarist Greg Ingraham and others to form The Hi-Nobles , forgoing the metal and punk of their previous bands for a '60s soul-influenced rock reminiscent of The Dirtbombs. Shake is the band's first album. Here's the title track: The Hi-Nobles - "Shake" They'll be playing on Friday, October 30th at Bottom of the Hill and November 21st at Bender's .

His MySpace page reads like that of a scrappy Brooklyn any-kid who makes music for his friends from the unassuming far corner of his childhood bedroom, next to a pinup of Tom Petty and a wide-eyed girl he might be in love with. The self-tweeted "Rambling Man" doesn't have that many "friends," a mere 3,968, is still grateful for small NYC club gigs, and cites both Biggie and Pavement as influences, but his music begs a much bigger bio than his profile suggests. One listen to "Buriedfed," from his eponymous 2008 debut will destroy you. It's the best [...]
This is what I am doing right now, except it is raining and gray in Portland, and the show is in a dirty dark dive bar at 3pm in the afternoon. Everything else is exactly as you see it here:

Skuzzy, ramshackle garage rock brought to you by the sleek and sexy Scion. Hey, a free, all-day music event with some high-decibel rock 'n' roll-I'm not complaining... but it's still sounds kinda funny. The Scion Garage Fest rolls into town tomorrow, invading all your favorite rock haunts. And there's so much to choose from, including some older models like The Dirtbombs, Roky Erickson, Pierced Arrows and Simply Saucer as well as some younger, sexier ones-Black Lips, Box Elders and Harlem. For my money I'll go with Austin's The Strange Boys , who play at Dante's [...]

Reverb is a local music festival (in Seattle, WA for you global readers) that the Seattle Weekly has been putting on for a few years, each year seems decidedly better than the last. Critics might point out it doesn't have all the big names as The Stranger's Capitol Hill Block Party and they'd be right, but Reverb isn't trying to be like the CHBP, it is it's own beast. And the things it has going for it: Reverb takes place in Ballard, a great neighborhood with a bit of an older feel to it than Capitol [...]
Former garage-rockers make 'noise' lowercase in their name, sound. The Noisettes are raving hot in Britain, and the British/American popular music dichotomy plays a significant role in how to approach them, hitting the Top of the Pops back home but playing tiny venues across the States. So here, we have the Noisettes appealing to the trendsetters; just like Astralwerks pulls EMI's international pop stars and pitches them to people in the States as "indie", Universal has on their hands a band that seems a premade -- and likely permanent - VH1 Band to Watch. After an album's worth of [...]

The Hi-Nobles Shake Zaentz Records [2009] Fire Drill Review: This is probably one of the most bizarre meshings of previous bands but The Hi-Nobles are made up of Bay Area musicians from '70s punks The Avengers and the metal group Mordred to release Shake's 60's inspired garage & soul rock n roll. The record brings 100% energy and dips into bluesy undertones, which keeps the record grounded and from overreaching into a [...]

Jack White Donates $170k for Detroit Baseball Field Restoration Jack White may have ditched his hometown of Detroit to settle down more comfortably in Nashville, but he's definitely not leaving behind his old stomping grounds to fester amid the recession. In fact, the White Stripes, Raconteurs, and Dead Weather rock star is trying his hand at philanthropy. The Detroit News reports that White covertly donated $170,000 towards the restoration of Clark Park field, a baseball diamond where White played ball as a kid. "He was good," said Mo Blackwell, former brother-in-law to [...]

The second annual Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival has come and gone, with all of its unpredictable weather and unending media sharing. That aside, Outside Lands was truly an event for everyone: locals, tourists and the community of music and art appreciators at large. Well representing San Francisco's growing industry of mobile food, OSL was catered by many local eats, such as Philz Coffee, Bonny Doon Vineyard (Santa Cruz) and Burger Meister. A variety of vendor booths gave festivalgoers a sense of San Francisco lifestyle, whether it be one of the [...]
