Photos by Rachel Keenan and Nicole L. Browner The beauty of catching a show at the Hemlock Tavern (in addition to consistently great booking and cheap PBR tall boys), is that the back room can feel full with even 20 or 30 people in the crowd. Last Friday, that wasn't even an issue, though, as three of the Bay's most buzzed about bands- Dominant Legs , Young Prisms and Weekend -and Denver's Woodsman packed the place, [...]

Dominant Legs - "Just Silly Ones" SF bands Dominant Legs , Young Prisms and Weekend perform together Friday night at the Hemlock (9:30pm, $7). The show's an excellent opportunity to check out three of the Bay Area's most promising young bands. Dominant Legs is the experimental pop duo of Hannah Hunt and Ryan William Lynch (former member of Magic Bullets , now also of Girls ), who've been getting a lot of [...]

Ryan Lynch and Hannah Hunt's Dominant Legs have been nourishing our starving little hearts for a good minute now since the project took off in earnest at the end of the Summer. "Young And Love At Life" in all its time-warped whiteboy funk and sorrowful soul sparkle is certainly one of our most adored jams of the year and we revisit it here for retrospect and celebration's sake whilst waiting hurtingly for their debut record to (double)drop in highest 2010. Favourite song of 2009? [...]

SF band Weekend recently sent over "Young Haunts", the B-side from their upcoming Mexican Summer-released 103. The record comes out in December, but the digital's available now. My cat didn't like the feedback at the beginning, but there are times you trust a cat's opinion (say, on the taste of cat food), and times you don't (like on the merits of fuzzed-out rock and roll). Weekend - "Youth Haunts" We recently posted the demo version of the A-side too; together [...]

Let's pretend you are sitting at your friend's house. Everyone is happy and having a good time and then out of nowhere, your friend starts to read from their diary. And what you hear is intense, and personal, and messy, and you feel torn between your desire to stop them and an undeniable curiosity that is asking you to go deeper. That is what seeing Girls live feels like. Like a voyeuristic peek into one man's seeping heart, and in the end, you're not sure if your presence has been cathartic or you just spent an hour taking [...]

If you've heard anything from the San Francisco's Dominant Legs , then you too are probably rediscovering that itch for Tracy Chapman and the heart massage her vocals proffer. While some kids are turning to muddy guitar riffs and beachy keen melodies, it's nice to know Mr. Legs' head resides in a time when vocals were dominant. Har. That and lights were used with purpose during music video shoots. See what we mean above.

Formed: 2007 in San Francisco Members: Christopher Owens and Chet "JR" White. Latest release: Girls' debut, Album, came out this fall on True Panther records. Why you care: Girls' back story is almost too good to be true: Frontman and songwriter Christopher Owens grew up as a member of the Children of God cult in Florida (no, really) and spent much of his childhood as a vagabond, living for stints in Europe and Puerto Rico. It's rumored his mother was among women followers used by [...]
2010 is shaping up to be a lot like 2009 for San Francisco's Girls . Well, maybe not quite the same, unless they announce a surprise sophomore record (wishful thinking, I know, but is that really a bad thing?). Anyway, with the release of its lush debut Album , the band settled in and played a slew of dates across the nation. In case you missed one of their shows, which is kind of likely as many were sold out, 2010 will be your chance to see some, well, live Girls performing. [...]

![Girls + Real Estate @ Empty Bottle [11/12/09]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2123709_lg.jpg)
Gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised by Girls' show at the Empty Bottle last night. I'd read several really bad reviews of the band's East Coast shows, and fully expected to leave after the first few songs. (I was primarily there to see Real Estate , who did not disappoint.) But you know what? Girls were actually pretty good. I kept waiting to see signs of the painful amateurishness hinted at in the Post and Times, but all I saw was a talented young band dealing with [...]
Sure, Christopher Owens's life story sounds like a bit much , what with the being raised in a cult, and having a millionaire savior and ending up in one of the most critically hailed and widely embraced bands of the year. Ever the suspicious type, The Village Voice decided to look into the Girls lead singer's claims and the verdict is that Owens is likely telling the truth . The paper found bits of scattered proof supporting Owens's account of his fantastic, out-there upbringing: "At the [...]
