Scotland's finest Detroit techno artists. Don't get the credit they deserve South of the Border. And Scotland doesn't seem to love its electronic innovators in the same way that Postcard is revered. Artists, club owners, label owners. What more do you want? I guess we could do without more re-releases of Positive Eduction mixes. Like so many techno artists, Glasgow, Scotland-based Slam is a duo, comprising Orde Meikle and Stuart McMillan. They also embody the genre's tradition of not limiting themselves to one activity. Slam started out in the [...]

Here's what my encyclopedia says:- Formed in Glasgow in 1991 as Dove by Applied Biochemisttry student/graduate Dorothy 'Dot' Allison, along with Ian Carmichael and former Altered Images man Jim McKinven. Initailly released on the local Soma imprint, the dreamy ambience of 'Fallen' was subsequently remixed and re-issued by the 'Boys Own' label, an operation partly run by DJ extraordinaire, Andrew Weatherall. The band's association with Weatherall helped create a buzz that peaked with the release of 'White Love' (recorded with the help of Jah Wobble and Primal Scream's Andrew Innes amongst others), [...]
A new animated video for Massive Attack's 'United Snakes' by United Visual Artists . According to Inflight Data , the song was first performed on the band's 2004 tour, featured on the False Flags promo CD and has been re-recorded as 'Bullet' featuring Dot Allison. Making of video here . Related Posts New Massive Attack - Splitting the Atom
Massive Attack are currently mixing their upcoming fifth studio album. Robert del Naja had suggested Weather Underground was its working title, although the final title has not been announced. Officially confirmed guest vocalists are Horace Andy, Tunde Adebimpe, Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval, Guy Garvey and Martina Topley-Bird. Several artists did record sessions but will not appear in the album. These artists are Jhelisa Anderson (also recorded unreleased material in 2002), Stephanie Dosen, Yolanda Quarty (of Phantom Limb), Aku and Akwetey Orraca-Tetteh of Dragons of Zynth, Elizabeth Fraser, Dot Allison, Debbie Clare, Mike Patton, Fredo Viola and Beth Orton. Ruby is Lesley Rankine. She was in shouty band Silverfish, before going solo in a trip hop vein. She released two albums and a number of singles. But she abandoned her musical career when Ruby didn't take off after a promising beginning. Which is a shame, as LP "Salt Peter" is definitely worth your time. Ruby was the alias of singer Lesley Rankine, previously the frontwoman of Scottish noise-provocateurs Silverfish. After leaving the group in the wake of their 1993 LP Fuckin' Drivin' or What, Rankine relocated from London [...]

(photo by Karen E. McBride) Avant-pop chanteuse Dot Allison creates something of a soft spot for us. Ten years ago we had a college radio show called "Living Digital" that covered as many facets of electro music at the time...

As if starting a special week of postings from Orbital and The Orb wasn't enough. Now we have a quick post on classic Scottish Housers, One Dove, focusing on their work with Andrew Weatherall. One Dove were originally Dove and featured Ian Carmichael and singer Dot Allison . One Dove's 1993 debut album, Morning Dove White, featured production by godlike genius Andrew Weatherall. Under his direction, the band became one of the most likely to succeed in alternative circles in late 1993. Sadly they broke up amidst rumours of band in-fighting, substance abuse and problems [...]

My full column is coming tomorrow evening, but first I thought I'd do an extra blog this morning. This track has, for me at least, been an awfully long time coming. Dot Allison , who has collaborated with Death in Vegas , Massive Attack , and fronted early 90s band One Dove , was on stage at one of my first ever concerts. Joining Babyshambles on tour in 2005, Peter Doherty and Dot Allison let the band leave, as they performed a series of duets. One was this original, [...]

CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

Get your work judged by Scottish techno legends Slam – winning remix gets a release…

I gotta admit I've been pretty bored with dance music as of late. I'm not saying that quality tracks haven't been coming out... it's just I'd rather listen to Blur, Oasis, Joy Division, Morrissey, The Cure, Late Of The Pier, and Klaxons (speaking of, when is that Klaxons album gonna come out now?!?! If you have "The Parhelion", "Moonhead", "Marble Fields And The Hydrolight Head Of Delusion", "Imaginary Pleasures", "Silver Forest", "Echos", "Venus", or "Hoodoo Borer" let me know!) I mean, I dunno, maybe I'm full of it but British music (on a [...]

This is pretty much a MEGA-WEEK of new releases, so music fans: expect your wallet to get hit hard. Not even counting that slew of newly-remastered Beatles discs, there's still a boatload of stuff- lots of it from big, classic indie names: there's the new Circulatory System , Merge is dropping both the new Clean album AND the new Polvo , there's Os Mutantes ' all-new Haih , and Yo La Tengo 's Popular Songs is out today as well. On top of that, [...]
I was off being irresponsible in other countries again, so someone's gonna have to catch me up on what came out in the last couple weeks. This week's biggest offering is a remastered 17-disc box set of Beatles albums. Tempting. And then there's my personal fave, A Fine Frenzy (album review pending), a new Dethklok album, Jay-Z and a bunch of other albums I will be curious to check out but am too lazy to enumerate. :: 3 Inches Of Blood , Here [...]

The big music news this week comes from the Beatles, with the release of a 17-CD box set of remastered albums along with 14 individual albums, not to mention Tuesday's release of The Beatles: Rock Band for your music videogaming pleasure. Two bands return from lengthy hiatuses to release possibly their greatest albums yet, Polvo with In Prism and Prefab Sprout with Let's Change the World With Music . I can definitely also recommend Vivian Girls' [...]
