A few days before next month's SXSW Festival here in Austin, there's another festival going on a few hours up the road in nearby Denton. Set to take place on March 11th-14th , the NX35 Music Conferette boasts an impressive lineup with the likes of Midlake , Neon Indian , Pattern Is Movement , Pomegranates , The Black Angels , Via Audio , The Flaming Lips , and many others. Single night all-venue tickets are only $20, with the all-access tickets going for $65. Purchase [...]

I don't have any excuse as to why this doesn't have any descriptions on it, or any promises of "more content later," but I can tell you that I don't really give a shit what you think either way. You know that, right? I've never really been into customer service, and I'm not about to start. Anyways, SR did all these links, and hopefully we'll add what we left out. Thanks. (DL) Busy weekend, so lets get started: FRIDAY [...]

There were a number of things that were released too late in 2008 to include in the 2008 Year in Review . There were also some that I missed altogether. As they say better late than never.... It's hard to explain to someone who lives outside of the DFWd area exactly how great the music scene is around here... particularly in Denton. Now the explaining can get a little bit of help with the Gutterth Compilation 2. It features tons of local artists like our SubEx buddy Cory Graves band Mount Righteous, a favorite of ours Sarah Jaffe, RTB2, Ryan Thomas Becker, Shiny Around The Edges and literally dozens more. Doug Burr's bring-you-to-tears excellence of "Mirror Ball" is an instant goldmine find [...]

This weekend held quite a musical extravaganza for our fair burg of Denton. A trifecta of some of Denton's best venues: Hailey's, Dan's Silverleaf and Andy's Bar all had a special night of music for our listening pleasure. And all being located within the rim of the quaint Denton Square, you could almost see a golden glow of musical grandeur radiating outward into the open sky of Saturday night. The annual Spune Christmas Show at Hailey's rolled around again for an early Christmas surprise that did not let down. First of all, it [...]

It's our fourth time around with this new Guestlist feature, and the momentum has not let up yet, children! When this feature first started about a month ago (To which I feel at least partly responsible for getting the pebbles rolling on? *winky-wink* See "My Top 5 Venues In Denton") I thought, "Sure. This should be an interesting bit." The weeks have gone on, and as I hoped, we have received more and more interesting lists from these contributing artists to share with the SubEx community. This weeks Guestlist comes [...]

This week was a busy one for new music coming from Sheffield, with two excellent local singer/songwriters releasing new albums. Dead Prez / RC Williams & The Gritz Band / Jay Clipp (Prophet Bar): Dead Prez seems to have at mellowed out considerably, at least in sound , if not in world view, judging by what I've heard on their most recent album, Pulse Of The People . Their newest music is no longer the harsh, minimal sound that they made their name on, and instead tracks are fleshed out with bigger production, lush instrumentation, and melodic backing vocals. Their lyrical content is still socially conscious and aggravated, but stic.man and [...]

Many people feel that Denton "isn't the same anymore" since Fry Street has been uprooted. Personally, I don't really miss any of what was destroyed… mainly because it got rid of the street rat punk infestation and the damned stench of body odor masked with patchouli (You know you smelled it). Plus, I got to see an awesome structure fire at the ol' Tomato… I digress, though... But all of a sudden, it was as if a veil was lifted off everyone's eyes, and now they all wonder, "where the music went." From the days [...]
