Eli Paperboy Reed @ The Bell House ( more by Jacob Blickenstaff ) Tickets are on sale for the recently-added Neon Indian show at Brooklyn Bowl . Soul man Eli "Paperboy" Reed is playing a show at Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday night (11/21). Tickets are on sale for that too. Eli, who also plays in Salem, Massachusetts tonight (11/20), was supposed to hit DC on the 22nd, but that's been cancelled "due to some logistical [...]

Hurricane Bells "Tonight is The Ghost" ( Vagrant , 11.10.09 Digital/ Feb. 2010 Physical) "This Year" Reflects the collective depression of our country right now. A perfect New Year's Eve song. "This Is A Test" The answer to the depression and complexity and constant spinning is simplicity... R.E.M. Influence. "I Can't Remember" A cry for a return to youthful bliss and innocence. Again uncertainty and anger abound. "Tonight I'm Going to Be Like A Shooting Star" Near traditional folk building into a full blown rock sound... Romance now gone [...]
Generationals - Angry Charlie from LaundroMatinee on Vimeo.New Orleans throwback rock band the Generationals are headlining Club Congress tonight, for the band's second Tucson show. Part of the same Park the Van roster as Dr. Dog and our own beloved Golden Boots, the Generationals are touring in support of their first album, Con Law. I talked to the band a couple weeks ago for a feature in the
Former members of Days Away and Unlikely Cowboy have united for sunny/hazy folk band Good Old War. The Philadelphia outfit sounds a bit like a countrified version of another outstanding Philly group, Dr. Dog. Here is Good Old War with new single "Maybe Mine." Featuring Pet Sounds harmonies, acoustic-guitar jangle, tambourine, beards and flannel, the [...]

Taco Bell's Feed the Beat promotion has had a stumble or two in the past--such as when famed vegetarian Ted Leo won without even entering. However, giving bands free food on the road is always a great promotion (and, for the record, Taco Bell DOES offer vegetarian options). The announced winners for 2009 are after the jump. Though I'm wondering if "Electronic Six" from the list of winners is supposed to be "Electric Six." Let's hope it's not a Ted Leo-ish flub! Winners of the 2009 Feed the [...]
![[MP3] Beach House: "Norway"](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2133087_lg.jpg)
Beach House likes making dream pop. This is fact. They're getting ready to release their third album, Teen Dream , in late January on Sub Pop . This is also fact. But is it true that they have released a VERY promising first single from said album that gives much more hope than we previously thought to the first month of the new decade in music?? Yes. This is also fact. The song is "Norway" and it is very good. Tell all your friends and you will be cool. Beach House – "Norway" [MP3] [...]
Memorable Quotes "Another Successful interaction with a man."--Liz Last weekend I picked up this girl after practicing Jedi Moves at Prospect Park. Took her home on the handlebars of my bike, snuck her inside past my mom, she sees my mint condition Hell boy action figure and she starts quoting your damn book."--Frank "I did Big Sister in College. That little girl taught me how to use tampons."--Liz "Punish You? I've always wanted to film a student werewolf movie in Iceland where I'm filling in last minute for Victoria [...]

Breaking the long lull in posting with a few photos today from this past Thursday night's first annual fundraiser show for the Weathervane Music Organization . If you havn't heard of Weathervane it's a non profit organization cofounded by Philadelphia's own Brian McTear to work with and support independent artists in this challenging new era for working musicians. You can learn more and get involved by lending your support here http://weathervanemusic.org/ . Thursday night started off in the amazing space at 2424 Studios with a special solo show by Scott McMicken of [...]
"Ooh You Hurt Me So" by Clare & The Reasons is one of the best little surprises I've stumbled on in awhile. It's off their brand new record, Arrow (their follow-up to 2007's The Movie ), a record that happens to be full of great little surprises. It plays like the soundtrack to a film in my head - one that's character driven, but with lots of beautiful cinematic shots - the kind that stays with you long after you forget what it's actually about. The group, fronted by collaborators Clare and Olivier [...]

[mp3] Sunset: "Pocketful of Debt" Gold Dissolves to Gray is the subtly gorgeous new album from Austin's Sunset . The new mp3 above begins with a simple piano progression (think Lennon's "Imagine") and slowly builds with soft layers of vocals, guitars, and accordion (perhaps harmonium). There is certainly a good amount of The Beatles in Gold Dissolves to Gray , which brings to mind comparisons with bands such as Dr. Dog. Yet, Sunset are able to put enough of themselves into the record to make it one of [...]

Got lots to do today, but I wanted to get this out to you. The Bloodsugars are out of Brooklyn and their new album I Can't Go On, I'll Go On comes out on November 17th on Engine Room Recordings. The album features trumpet player Kyle Resnick (The National), cellist Colette Alexander (Rilo Kiley, Jens Lekman, Rachel Yamagata) and Bell. Additionally, Philadelphia-based Bill Moriarty, the man behind albums by Dr. Dog and Man Man, produced and engineered the record. This single off the album is a really up-beat pop song. MP3: The [...]
My buddy Mike is working in the music industry for Sonicbids . As such, he gets hooked up with all kinds of free shwag, including a badge to this year's CMJ Music Marathon, or whatever they're calling it now; he was gracious enough to write up a fantastic recap for us (and Sonicbids ). Mike's an all around mensch who knows the ins and outs of the business and has been putting me on to new music since our high school days. Hopefully we'll be [...]

In the middle of her solo performance at The Mill in Iowa City Thursday night, Pieta said to the small crowd, "It's like I'm playing to you in my living room!" Pieta was referring to the small crowd on Thursday night, but the stage was adorned with a chair and nightstand as well as lamps and an old dress form giving the stage a homey touch with lighting designed by Stan Crocker , who has done a lot of lighting design for TV shows like CMT's Crossroads. Last night was the first night of a three-week artist-in-residency [...]
Just as soon as one ends, here's another for you all... In the summer of 2008, iconic surfer and former Pipe Master, Rob Machado, flew to Indonesia to experience a "different kind of surf trip." As the story goes, "the journey ultimately took him way beyond his comfort zone, where he was finally alone with his thoughts, desires and the empty perfection of an unnamed Indian Ocean reef." What he discovered was captured in his new autobiographical film, The Drifter , which was released on DVD this past Tuesday, November 3rd. [...]

The Bloodsugars CMJ Showcase at Spike Hill (10/23/09) Photo : Jon Klemm DOWNLOAD : "Light at the End of the Tunnel" - The Bloodsugars I was about to call it a night on CMJ Friday ( Oct 23 ), but on my way to the subway I decided to duck into Spike Hill and catch a midnight set by The Bloodsugars . I'm glad I did because the Brooklyn based quartet was previewing new material off of their forthcoming album [...]

Dirty Sock Funtime Band : Dino-Soaring Note: Dino-Soaring does not appear to be available on any album. However, you can: [ purchase a selection of music from Jack's Big Music Show here ] [ or go here to purchase albums by the Dirty Sock Funtime Band ] Our theme, Cool Kidsongs, is deliberately limited to songs that parents can enjoy as well. So that leaves out songs that are cloyingly sweet, or nauseatingly cute, or just downright irritating. And there are far too [...]

We all know B Rabbit's loco ass wrote those straitjacket sixteens in this Before I Self Destruct drip and you didn't. We're [...]

Tonight is the kickoff a way too long of a celebration for Halloween. Don't get me wrong, I love it, and am excited to be back in town this weekend, but honestly I don't think my body can handle it. Voodoo, Park the Van 5 year anniversary, the Hornets getting the season started, trying to break a zombie record, and a huge Monday night football game are sure to make me never sleep! Well here are some of the things to do tonight. At & (Ampersand) tonight hard hitting DJs MSTRKRFT [...]
