The Altrok Radio FM Showcase once again holds forth tonight at 11pm Eastern (remember, that's a new time) at 90.5 The Night . Look at it realistically — it's 2009, every band that ever made it out of the garage long enough to release a single is out there on the reunion circuit, building a set around the only album of theirs anyone ever bought and flogging the living beejeezus out of the phrase "in its entirety." And when it comes to solo artists, forget it — without the bother of other people to reconcile with, everybody and their brother is back on the boards these days. Rumor has it your mother is planning a comeback tour in 2010. So how much time [...]

When drummer Bill Berry amicably left R.E.M. in 1997, it threw the incredibly popular alt-rock giants into a spiral that left them diminished, yet ripe for experiment . Since then, Berry has made only a handful of on stage appearances, most recently stopping by to perform in hometown Athens this past Monday night. Normally, this sort of thing wouldn't be so newsworthy. However, Berry, who retired from the band in 1997 after suffering a brain aneurysm, appeared on stage this time with former bandmates Mike Mills and Peter Buck [...]

I've been a fan of Joe Pernice for quite a little while now, but I'd be the first to admit that my knowledge of him is not as extensive as it could be. For example, I only found out recently that, not only has he been living here in Toronto for several years now, but he's actually been living only a few blocks away from me. A 'few blocks away from me' is also the location of The Dakota Tavern, which apparently is part of the reason why he chose that particular venue for his return to the [...]

[ photo by nyctaper ] For ardent baseball fans and a long time followers of the music of R.E.M. , Dream Syndicate , Young Fresh Fellows , Minus 5 , Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3 , the all-star group that performed on Wednesday at the Bowery Ballroom was the best of all worlds. The foursome of Steve, Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey and Linda Pitmon performed over two and a half hours of music which encompassed far more material than their 2008 collaboration on The Baseball Project . [...]

I have been remiss about getting this interview with Steve Wynn posted because I've been doing things like... traveling to see Steve Wynn. So, I'll wrap a review of Wynn's recent Baseball Project show in Chicago in with this short Q&A about his new self-released CD, Steve Sings Bob . First up, the Baseball Project. The show was a triple bill, with the BP, the Steve Wynn IV and the Minus 5. However, it was all the same band, with Wynn on guitar and vox, Scott McCaughey also on guitar and vocals, Peter [...]
