MP3: Béla Fleck and the Flecktones - Sunset Road , Live at Vicar Street (Dublin) on Nov 4 2009 ( Live Music Archive ) Let me be plain: you have never seen anything like Béla Fleck and the Flecktones . This latest string of US dates is sometimes billed as a reunion of the founding lineup (the first in 18 years), but that's only technically true. The Flecktones have toured extensively over the past two decades, but only now are rejoined by "the Tall, Thin Flecktone," piano and [...]

The summer of 2003 was a hot one in eastern Washington, and my concrete bunker of an apartment contained the heat like no other. Granted, the above image wasn't shot by yours truly until 2004, but it sure seemed hot enough to ignite even the least combustible of items. I wrapped up my undergraduate that December, which was cold as Antarctica, and upon that milestone I moved to Seattle. It was a good year for the Northwest; many of my favorite albums came from Seattle labels like Sub Pop and Barsuk. As for the list, I've [...]

Morning's debut was released by Vault in 1970. Thankfully, Wounded Bird Records has reissued this long lost album for the first time on cd. Morning is full of spectacular performances, making it one of the mandatory LPs in the rural-rock/American roots/country-rock field. While CSNY, Poco , and Band influences are easy to spot this record is by no means derivative. The band had its roots in several interesting 60s pop/garage bands (Wind and Moorpark Intersection) who happened to release a few decent 45s. The debut lineup looks something like this: Barry Brown (guitar/drums/vocals), Jim Hobson (piano/organ/vocals), Jay Lewis [...]

As part of our ongoing end-of-the-decade coverage, we sent out a survey to various people in the music, arts and entertainment communities. Here is another question we asked: What does "indie" mean to you? Discuss our respondents' answers and leave your own in the comments section. Douglas Wolk, writer: That's very simple. "Indie" is short for "independent." Independently released music is not directly financially dependent on any of the four major labels (WMG, Sony BMG, EMI and Universal). "Indie" does [...]

Listen to "What's On The Hi-Fi Ep. 5" MP3 "Good Morning" - Bikini Machine France's Bikini Machine (whose name is taken from the B-movie Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine ) thrive on inspiration from the sounds of 50's / 60's subculture - coupling vintage guitars and melodies with modern rock and electro sounds. The imprint of Jon Spencer as producer and [...]

By Tom Huizenga Conductor Marin Alsop ( Tracey Brown ) Let's face it, the world of classical music is fairly far off the radar screen for most people in this country. Still, [...]
Bellatrix & Coldplay, The Point, Oxford, 22 May 2000 Twist, The Bullingdon Arms, Oxford, May 2000 According to youtube, Bellatrix is either the UK female beatboxing champion, or a Japanese "electric-classical" quartet, or Helena Bonham-Carter. I'd like to find out more about the world of attractive crossover-classical musicians: I'll bet it's brutal. Bellatrix was also a Scandinavian indie-pop group signed, I think, to Fierce Panda. They must have had something to recommend them, as the co-headliners were bloody Coldplay [...]
I've got this ongoing list of albums coming in 2010 that I'm eagerly anticipating. Mixed in with the new entries from acts who've already released something are artists and groups who have yet to really try to establish themselves (for the purposes of this post, that excludes anyone who by the end of 2009 will have commercially released an actual intended-to-be-played-by-the-r adio single, including as a famous part of an earlier group) but have already given me reason to hope for what they'll do. The bad news is that in many cases my excitement is based on only a [...]
by joel chaffee My hope was that Luis Accorsi, Cracked Latin's charismatic lead-singer, would not descend from the stage and twirl me 'round. Fortunately he found a much lovelier specimen than myself for that honor. But all of us partaking of the band's show at Kenny's Castaways November 6 knew he would be dancing with someone. [...]

Have you ever heard of the theory that if you want to branch out and/or change who you are, it's easier in a new surrounding? For example, if you suddenly decided to start wearing red lipstick or a mohawk, when you've never done so in the past and all your friends have known you as the t-shirt and jeans person, they'd question you a little bit. But in a new setting, like a new school or city, you can change some superficial qualities about yourself without question. We all try to be accepting, but maybe it's human nature [...]

Fronted by multi-instru mentalist and musical golden boy, Emitt Rhode s in 1966, the band featured fo rmer members of Grass Roots and the Gene Clark Group . With two mem bers still in [...]

I had an OMG moment after I looked at last week's stats, I'm pretty amazed how many peeps stopped by. It's nice to know after laying off for so long that anyone would still be interested, it's extremely heartening - thanks to all of you! It's sure a lot easier updating knowing it's appreciated. Welcome to November, the month that starts the holiday cycle that ends with New Years Day in January. It can be the most hectic and stressful part of the year, no better time for good tunes to keep things running smooth - here's seven [...]
