Being the young age I am (under 30) this last decade was really the one where I can intensely focus on new releases, critically analyze and find real magic in modern music. As much as I wish I was cool enough to say I bought "Slanted and Enchanted" on vinyl the day it came out or smoke a joint and sit around with my friends about to listen to "The Bends follow-up album" with everyone saying "this better not suck!" But since I never saw Nirvana in a basement and didn't hear "Loveless" until Billy Corgan recommended it I'll just stick to [...]

I encountered a problem while recording this week's show-there seemed to be voices leaking into the recording. It's strange, because we don't live anywhere near radio towers, which is usually the cause of that kind of interference. What's also disconcerting, is that I'm not sure if I was hearing the voices coming from my headphones, or from somewhere else in the room. I'm OK with recording equipment, but definitely not an expert. I'm going to look over my setup again, and make sure nothing's changed since last time I did my show. Anyhow, I hope the interference isn't [...]
Christian Rockers Relient K have just released their new album, Forget and Not Slow Down. We caught up with Matt Hoopes (guitarist) to find out what music makes him tick: 1. David Bazan - "Curse Your Branches" - I have been a longtime Pedro the Lion fan, but this album is seriously amazing and more honest than ever. 2. House of Heroes - "The End Is Not The End" - This is one of my favorite records of all time, and it just needs to be heard to be [...]
This week may provide the greatest variety of music releases all year. From Sufjan Stevens' debut classical work, The BQE to Jay Farrar and Benjamin Gibbard's collaborative effort One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Music From Kerouac's Big Sur to Things About Comin' My Way - A Tribute to The Mississippi Sheiks , the week's release list is filled with variety. The week is deep in quality releases, from what I have already heard I can strongly recommend The Atlas [...]

Ah, we're super excited! Sophie's mom, aka our dear Kim, is in the hospital as I type this pushing out what's soon to be the cutest babe of the year (pictured above). I'm super bummed that I can't be around to show some physical excitement, but at least for now I'm hoping that a collection of tunes for the tot to rock the cradle to will suffice. Sophie, bump this! And to our way loved and soon-to-be born Lucie Beatrice Harlow Glover, happy birthday lil' friend. Try and hold out a few months before getting a facebook. here's [...]
And so we've reached the last three months of the calendar year, known in the world of music as the Fourth Quarter. It's the last chance for bands and labels to make an impression, pocket a bit of cash, and maybe, just maybe, earn a sport on those illustrious year-end lists. As usually the case with these types of things, we got a lot of music to look forward to... with a heavy emphasis on "a lot." Fortunately, as it's usually the case with these types of things, we got you covered. Below, you'll find an extensive and [...]

I just really had to get that damn eye ball off the first post. It probably scared some people away... There's no other reason for this weird mix of tunes... Last night was one of those nights I really wanted to stay home. I took a mid-evening nap and woke sweaty and groggy about 8:15 PM. Only one thing would've made me choose to get up rather than flip the pillow over to find the cool side and return to slumberland: a show at my favorite venue ( the Beachland Tavern ) featuring the man responsible for the best album I've heard this year ( Brent Knopf ). So, I got up, got dressed, walked the dog, and headed to Waterloo Road, though not without a few muttered [...]

In theory, the CIA's charter prohibits it from engaging in domestic operations. In practice, that's taken about as seriously as Jay-Z's periodic announcements that he's retiring from show biz. The CIA explains its massive presence on US campuses by saying that so many foreign students attend US universities, it would be a shame not to try to recruit them. The Domestic Contacts Division is needed to glean information from US tourists and businessmen returning from abroad. Then there's the Domestic Operations Division, which handles foreign interventions on US soil, like breaking into foreign embassies. [...]

Hearing Rep. Joe Wilson (R - SC) shout out "You lie!" at the President last night reminded me of a similar confrontation between Bob Dylan and a hostile audience at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England recorded on May 17, 1966. Often mis-billed as the "Royal Albert Hall" Concert, the bootleg documents Dylan a week before his 25th birthday, enduring the tail-end of an ill-fated "World Tour." Throughout Europe (and particularly in Britain) he had met with widespread distaste at his choice to tour with a full rock band (the Hawks here would later become The [...]

It's been awhile since we've heard from the ol' Ginger King, but hey, it's all in good timing. Besides, you don't ever hear anyone complaining when bears hibernate for months on end. Some people might even revel in the thought (we're looking at you Stephen Colbert) . So, why now? What's so damn important, Mr. Michniak? Well, we never really know. He kind of just comes and goes, and in a manner similar to that faded photo of Bigfoot from years ago. That being said, we've gotta savor the times he does emerge, [...]

Like any rising star, Datarock came on two hours late to kick off their 2009 North American tour at Les Foufounes Électriques (translates to The Electric Pussies) in Montreal last Friday. But the wait and having to endure Orange Orange was well worth it (thank god for the ridiculously cheap drinks at Foufs - are there bars where you can get beers for $2.50 all night in Toronto?). Say what you will about Datarock and their superficial lack of originality - they put on a damn good show. I was a little surprised to see Datarock playing [...]

Sony Music Entertainment and Experience Hendrix L.L.C. have partnered in an arrangement that will result in a bevy of "deluxe" reissues of the legendary guitarist's extensive catalog. Among the planned releases are expanded versions of 'Are You Experienced?', 'Axis: Bold As Love', 'Electric Ladyland', and (outside the US) 'Band of Gypsys'. A number of posthumous compilations, produced under the stewardship of Experience Hendrix, are slated for release as well. "Jimi's legacy and vision were unique and there will never be another that reaches his unparalleled genius," said Janie Hendrix, President and CEO of Experience Hendrix, in a statement. [...]

I'll never be mistaken for a sentimental fool, but given enough pressure, just like the Bible says, even the rocks will cry out. Yeah, there was a moment back in January when old stone face became misty eyed. It was inauguration day—actually, inauguration night. My wife Nia and I were in DC. I was pleased but not overly moved by Obama's inauguration activities. Yes, the atmosphere was really, really welcoming. Imagine a crush of humanity but without pushing and shoving. People everywhere being nice to each other. Even the police were civil—smiling and generally being helpful to [...]
