We're happy to see that perennially knit-capped, Mercury Prize-winning Brit singer/songwriter Damon Gough -- aka Badly Drawn Boy -- is back for his first new recordings since 2006's Born In the U.K. Similar to his acclaimed songcycle/score for the '03 Nick Hornby film About A Boy , new album is Is There Nothing We Could Do" a collection of 15 new songs "from and inspired by" the upcoming British TV film The Fattest Man In Britain starring busy character actor Timothy Spall. New project arrives overseas on December 14 -- hopefully we'll see [...]

Girls at Neumo's, Seattle | 17 November 2009 "We're back, back in denim", Girls (SF) front guy Christopher Owens told the audience at Neumo's after being asked how he like Seattle. He was referring to the fact that they were here earlier this year at the Capitol Hill Block Party, but he was also referencing Lawrence Hayward's post Felt band Denim . Listening to Girls' debut Album I had this inkling that they were Felt and Denim fans. [...]

Everyone's favorite movie about the 80's has to be The Wedding Singer. It is kind of unfair to include this in great 80's soundtracks because it could choose from any and all 80's songs but it is as far as I am concerned a greatest hits collection of awesome 80's hits. The movie was made in 1998 and basically sparked a new love affair with the previous decade. It pretty much was the inspiration for VH1's I love the 80's series and also turned the Wedding Singer into a successful broadway show. Kind of weird how that happened. But the [...]
One of the surprise debuts of last year had to be Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... , a talk show featuring Costello pulling off the rare triple threat: host, performer and bandleader. Equal parts interview and jam session, the Sundance series relies upon Costello putting the artists at ease, getting even the prickliest of artists to open up and speak warmly about their influences. But, as Martin Mull once famously quipped, "talking about music is like dancing about architecture," and so it's the tremendous musical performances sprinkled throughout [...]
Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig earned super respect from this writer when during a recent interview with Pitchfork, he was asked to discuss the spoiled white-kid label often given to him and his band. He answer was priceless : When people try to frame us as these spoiled rich kids, I want to say, "Well, hold up. You don't know anything about my family, you don't know where I went to high school, you don't know how I paid for college." I mean, I grew up in New Jersey listening to the Ramones, the Clash, [...]

For months now, Brendan Boogie has run a phenomenally successful show series at the Lizard Lounge called The Cover-Up with Brendan Boogie . Each show takes one artist or theme and all the performing bands play cover sets accordingly. So far they've done Queen, The Black Crowes, Elvis Costello, and Kidz Rock (in which yours truly performed). Now we know that Boogs gets an awful lot of airtime on this blog, especially for such a scumbag*, but this Saturday night, his latest installment of The Cover-Up re-enacts The Band's The Last Waltz . Performing are: [...]
Vampire Weekend have just released a video for their previously announced single "Cousins," following last month's release of "Horchata." The track is available from XL digitally now, and will be available on 7" December 15th. It will also appear on their highly anticipated new record Contra , available January 12th. The Garth Jennings-directed video is a low budget but creative piece filmed in what appears to be a New York City alleyway. There's a brief moment about halfway in that references Bob Dylan's classic "Subterranean Homesick Blues" cue card video clip, and the track ends on a [...]

I recently sat down with Levi Fuller , a Seattle singer/songwriter, to talk about his recently released album Colossal , as well as several other somewhat related topics (ranging from cephalopods to the digitalization of music). Levi, who originally hails from Boston, has been a fixture in the Seattle music scene for several years now. He is often described as "the DIY mayor of Seattle," and is both a distributor of music (as the editor of the Ball of Wax Audio Quarterly , a quarterly compilation of [...]

Photo: Jeremy Charles Wanda Jackson told The Oklahoman that she is set to record an album produced by Jack White of the White Stripes in Nashville. Although the collaboration may seem odd coupling to some, this is familiar territory for both artists. In addition to his own bands, White has produced albums for the Von Bondies, Whirlwind Heat, the Greenhornes and Dexter Romweber Duo. He also produced country legend Loretta Lynn's Grammy Award-winning album, [...]
A little while back, a favorite artist of ours Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson made his way to town and we had the chance to ask him a few questions about his music. Not much is known about the up and coming artist so we hope you find this interview to be informative. Or at least a good read... Follow the jump for our full interview. ATH : Your new record Summer of Fear has an entirely different feel than the first album. [...]

While taking a trip to Southern California to see my buddies Matt, Cahn And Nick, I was on the hunt for an album that I heard Ken Andrews had produced by a band called Blinker The Star . At the time I was a big fan of the engineering Andrews had done on his own bands release Failure's "Fantastic Planet" . So anything with his name attached I was definitely interested in hearing. Luckily one day while listening to radio in the area they played the single " Below The Sliding Doors" which also had Andrews [...]

With the word "collective" bringing images of hippies and the faint scent of patchouli to mind I wouldn't normally jump on a band that defines themselves as such however if you start tossing around names like Glen Phillips and Sean Watkins I start putting aside preconceptions and take notice. Tell me they just released an album and you'll get me excited. Well that's just what's happened. Works Progress Administration has released WPS. I can't figure out how to describe Works Progress Administration so I'll just them do it in their own words: [...]
When My Morning Jacket played their legendary performance in the rain at Bonaroo last year, who knew that it would be the inspiration for an episode of American Dad ? Specifically, the 8-minute long rendition of Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home," featuring comedian Zach Galifianakis dressed as Little Orphan Annie . In the audience for the set was American Dad co-creator Mike Barker, and he's pulled not only My Morning Jacket in for the episode this Sunday (titled, "My Morning Straightjacket"), but also Zach Galifanakis, who provides the voice of an MMJ superfan. [...]
