We made another trip down to Bloomington for yet another great show last night, this time A.A. Bondy and Elvis Perkins In Dearland at the Video Saloon . Bloomington is now 4 for 4. Good work everyone! Keep it up! Bondy was relaxed and playful, cracking wry jokes between songs and laughing at the screaming co-eds running around outside the venue (oh college). He weaved his songs into a dense atmosphere, letting each song fade in and out and hang in the air as his band made their way through the short set. [...]

I only met Mark Mulcahy once. It was on the night that Mark and Ken played the North Star with The Mountain Goats who were on tour with Bowerbirds. This is the first night that I was lucky enough to have met my friend Ken Maiuri (an amazing musician and person, bar none , as they say). This was also the night that I received the most amazing hug in the World from John Darnielle, who come to think of it: should go down in history as a man with a Gift of Hug. It was a magical night. Elvis Perkins In Dearland w/ A.A. Bondy Mercy Lounge, Nashville, TN Tuesday, November 17, 2009 If you were at the Mercy Lounge Tuesday night, you never would have guessed that Nashville had been experiencing sunshine and 75 degree temperatures just two days earlier. It seemed like everyone in attendance had spent the indian summer weekend digging their winter clothes out of the back of the closet. Every other person was wearing either a sweater, scarf, knit hat, or some combination of the [...]

Contrast Podcast recently asked music bloggers like myself to submit our favorite 50 songs of the year for their annual "Festive 503 podcast. Our selections were then compiled into a shortlist and now we've been asked to recruit votes to narrow it down. For the curious, I've bolded the 10 songs I personally voted for. I really, really want "Nice Very Nice" by Kurt Vonnegut & Dave Soldier (from their album Ice-9 Ballads ) to make the final list. Not only because it's my favorite song of the year, from my favorite album of the year, [...]

Matter of Time mp3 The Leisure Society The Sleeper ..... ..... buy it Well, now this is getting interesting... Over at the Contrast Podcast , Tim's solicited everyone for their favorite 50 songs of 2009, remember? From all the responses he's compiled the top 155. I'm very impressed with the list! If you didn't submit your faves yet, you've still got a chance to get in the game at this point! Help us out, eh? (I"ve highlighted my top 10 in blue) Here's [...]
neil mcsweeney plies his trade in territory that's been radio blighted by every guitar wielding blubbering hormonal sac with a plastic soul to bare, with blanditudes proffered to soft-faced men in shiny cars and bleary-eyed women drinking wine alone in over-decorated apartments. territory that once encompassed a buncha folks from sam cooke to hank williams to bob dylan to tom waits - fella's (and fellettes) that strap on a six string or piano and bash out an honest to god song – now reduced to the sad bit in hollyoaks or the credits montage at the end of some sporting [...]
I fell for A.A. Bondy after hearing his Daytrotter session last year. In that five song set, only one track was from his (fantastic) 2007 record, American Hearts. The other four were brand new, but they resonated with me in a way usually reserved for songs already canonized - like I'd been hearing them my whole life. They shook me and made me listen to them over and over. Bondy's gravelly voice and amazing guitar skill transported me to another place in time, the way the best kind of folk music is supposed to. The last song in particular always made me stop [...]

The folk-rock EP features two takes on the same "dirge". The Doomsday EP features two versions of the same song, "Doomsday", with four other tunes sandwiched between the ostensible dirges. The folk-country songs fill a much larger space than their separate parts suggest. These are the songs that are the essence of rock 'n' roll. "Stay Zombie Stay" and "Stop Drop Rock and Roll" combine the country, blues, and African roots that the first instances of rock 'n' roll merged. Buddy Holly and early Elvis...
With European dates with The Felice Brothers now underway, A.A. Bondy has announced a new run of headlining shows in late November and early December. The tour, which will follow his previously announced dates with Elvis Perkins in Dearland, will begin November 24th at Club Garibaldi in Milwaukee, WI, and wrap up December 9th [...]
Welcome to the new, not-really-improved BabyStew This Week In Chicago listing. What's new about it, you ask? Absolutely nothing, except that it now covers the week from Monday through Sunday rather than Sunday through Saturday. It always seemed weird to me not to be listing Sunday shows until the morning of – when not many people are reading blogs – for the sole purpose of sticking with the conventional definition of "week" ( i.e. , Sun-Sat). But convention be damned. So here's what's going on in Chicago this "week". [...]

Originally, the purpose for The Midnight Rambles at Levon Helm's Woodstock home-recording studio - otherwise referred to as The Barn - was to serve as a way for the legendary drummer of The Band to recoup money from his mounting medical bills after battling and overcoming throat cancer. Helm's iconic and unmistakable voice was down to barely a raspy whisper after radiation treatments which forced him into resting his vocal chords. While he had to rely on his capable band to provide the vocals, Helm was able to return to [...]
