This is usually where I mention the relative strengths of this week's shows, as well as my personal picks for the week. But, err, it's Christmas, and there ain't crap goin' on this week, aside from two Waco Brothers shows at Schubas next weekend (I'm hoping to be back in town for the Sunday show). Aside from those, though... at least there's always internet porn. Monday, December 21 Beat Kitchen: Pat McCurdy (holiday show) Empty Bottle: Netherfriends, A [...]

I've been asked "what's your favourite album of 20093 several times, and I've even been asked to make my top albums of the decade list, but I really can't do it. It's almost impossible for me to make a list like that, - there is so much good music, and I can't say that one is better than another. What I like about year-end lists is that that I sometimes discover albums I haven't heard , and that's the kind of list I want to make. Here are my recommended [...]

Last year , EAR FARM featured 43 bands in our Band of the Week feature... ranging from relative unknowns (such as The Laughing and Bombadil ) to interviews with indie-rock legends (see The Wedding Present and Silver Jews ) to everything else in between. In 2009 we set out to one-up ourselves, and as it turns out we've done just that. This year EAR FARM featured 45 bands as Band of the Week, again flexing our genre chops across the entire spectrum of what we consider to be the best music being [...]

All Photos By Victoria Smith For those unfamiliar with Emily Wells (listen to her hear), she is a classically trained violinist whose passion for classical music is equaled with her passion for hip hop. Her songs are built upon layers of loops of kids' toy instruments (tiny pianos, and small xylophones), a violin, vocal effects, a bass, and drums. During her live set she is typically accompanied by her drummer, Sam Halerman and bassist, Joey Reina. Her styles range in comparisons from... Read more at www.SFCritic.com

This weekend was the Siren Nation music festival there in town, which mostly involved staking out the under appreciated Someday Lounge. The line up was through-and-through amazing . My highlights were Emily Wells and Y La Bamba. And everyone else. Emily Wells - Symphony 6: Fair Thee Well & The Requiem Mix Y La Bamba - Fasting in San Francisco
