My very good friend Randy Fuller has a really cool blog that is not about rock and roll. It's about wine, but he wrote an excellent piece recently on rock and roll wines. Actually, it's about good wine in bottles with rock and roll labels - Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is there, so are the Rolling Stones, and even a Woodstock poster bottle. As I said, very cool, and you can read it here . I've known Randy for many years now, we went [...]

After a lot of careful thinking, I have decided to leave the band. Having played with Hookah for almost 19 years, it was an extremely difficult decision, made even more difficult by my love for my band mates and our music. Naturally I'll be coming back to sit in periodically, but after New Year's Eve you'll be enjoying a new bass player. It has been an amazing privilege to spend so many years playing with this band, and I'll always be grateful for the experiences I've had along the way. I've gotten to travel all over the world to [...]

So the pretty lil event site Winter is the New Summer that Devin and I have been working on has officially launched in full! Whoo! Let's have a 750ml salute to that! We did a soft launch in October, then last week we introduced the poster concept and from this week on until the end of winter we will have a different member of the Portland scene acting as a Poster Boy or Poster Girl, holding up our event picks of the week, this week being Rocky formerly of the Hush and currently of [...]
Marc Richter may be best known as head honcho of Hamburg-based Dekorder Records, but since 2007 he's run a parallel campaign as the dark ambient project Black to Comm . Closer in spirit to experimental figures of yesterday like Moondog and Bernard Herrmann than current artists, Richter seems dead set on completely disorienting our frame of reference. His new full-length for Type Records, Alphabet 1968 , is a collection of oddities featuring: 'kitchen gamelan', smudged and disguised samples of vinyl, radio, and live recordings. Fairly static in composition, these ten tracks of [...]

Daniel Romano, Julie, Doiron, and Fred Squire: beautiful music Julie Doiron is someone I've never paid enough attention to in these here pages, but it's not for a lack of interest in her work. She is perhaps one of the great unsung heroes of the Canadian music scene: an indie pioneer as part of Eric's Trip, and a consummate collaborator with Mount Eerie and Wooden Stars (to name a few), and a respected and loved solo musician in her own right. Doiron has hit another one out of the park, this time by teaming up with [...]
Just when you think that 2009 was winding down for interesting new releases and that we're destined to have a December filled with nothing but the usual best ofs, live records, and Christmas albums we get this little nugget. Stalwart Canadian artists Daniel Romano (Attack In Black), Fred Squire (Calm Down It's Monday) and Julie Doiron (Eric's Trip) are teaming up to release a new album. The

Before Schubas, Wax Tailor 's music came to attention to me while sitting at a microbrewery café years ago with soulful cuts crafting a smooth trip-hop and hip-hop combination not heard of since Madlib 's Blue Note foray. While one is established, the other is rising with his unique blend, evoking a sound reminiscent more of Portishead than any other hip-hop producer. Utilizing jazz instrumentals, strips of film dialogues, and vocalists from around the world, Jean-Christophe Le Saoût has been building upon his firm French foundation with a featured track on the recently [...]

Robert Cray announces UK tour dates Robert Cray has announced his UK tour dates. For thirty plus years Robert Cray has laid down track after track of good-time, uptown, low-down blues. He's won five Grammy's and been nominated for 11 more. From classic titles 'Phone Booth' , to highlights from his more recent releases 'Poor Johnny' , whether addressing timeless themes of heartache and romance 'The Things You Do To Me' or this morning's headlines 'Twenty' , Cray delivers on [...]

"Meet Jump Clubb. A band from Beverly Hills whose music combines dance, disco, and electronic styles with indie mentalities and vocals straight from the height of the lo-fi era. Think LCD Soundsystem meets Beat Happening. Or Hot Chip meets Eric's Trip." —Press Release I don't find anything really offensive about this Elliott Smith cover: Smith's vocal and rhythmic syncopation has always seemed like it would translate pretty easy to the dance club (despite the stormclouds hanging over Smith as a songwriter), so it actually seems kind of natural. But I know somebody [...]

It's been a good year for Thievery Corporation . A Grammy nomination for Best Recording Package, madcap touring schedule, and meeting and opening for Paul McCartney are no small feats for this worldly group. But now they're stepping it down a notch, closing ranks, and preparing to hit the studio for 2010. In an interview with Billboard.com , co-lead Rob Garza said the band is going to finish their year with shows and enter the studio in January to record the follow-up to 2008's Radio Retaliation . As for preparations for the [...]
Another year of (mostly) daily tunes here at Doklands, and I have to say I'm still having fun with this. I considered winding this up after hitting 1,000 tracks because really, how much is there left to say? Glad I didn't, though. Nik Bärtsch's Ronin - Modul 38-17 Miriam Makeba - Jol'inkomo Bishop Allen - Psycho Killer Oysterband - Road To Nowhere MGMT - This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) Geoffrey Oryema - Listening Wind The Staple Singers - Life During Wartime The Staple Singers - Slippery [...]

In life, the best things are usually the ones you don't know about, stumble upon and end up enjoying thoroughly. It's hard to plan. The best things just fall into place. As is the case with music festivals (and CMJ is no exception to this rule) it may be the reason for the phrase. Like SXSW, CMJ is full of unofficial parties, secret shows, and all sorts of RSVP lists that open the doors to epic parties, or parties that could be epic but no one knew about them, and hence, no one showed up. Luckily, we're going to clear [...]

For Seth Smith and his band Dog Day [ MySpace ], their rise to Canadian notoriety began in 2005 - a new project following the demise of his former band, The Burdocks , and features Nancy Urich (also of The Burdocks) and KC Spidle & Crystal Thili of hardcore act, The Hold. This new release, Elder Schoolhouse is a limited edition, vinyl only release available through Divorce Records and could be best described as " a collection of five songs that show Dog Day at their most experimental...still centering their [...]

Eric Testroete has this photo ensemble running on vimeo that is quite worth the 7 minute admission. It's his trip to Japan flashing before your eyes, literally. I had this general idea mapped out to take video/images of my frequent trips to San Francisco and make a similar presentation using this very song All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem . It obviously works well and I was obviously beat to the punch. Great song. cocoip [...]
