When someone tells you "He arrived with great fanfare..." that pretty much describes how Eric Matthews arrived on the scene in 1995 with It's Heavy In Here . For a while he was considered the king of chamber pop, and then went on to explore other musical directions (jazz, glam, prog). It's been very tough for him to live up to this first album, but he does an amazing job covering Brian Wilson's The Lonely Sea . The big news here is he has a NEW album coming out - preview the whole thing on MySpace. [...]

There are plenty of live albums issued solely as afterthoughts or contract fulfillments, but there are plenty that are as transcendent as the best in-person concert experiences, only with zero lines at the bathroom. For this particular list we came up with the following criteria: • Only one album per artist. • Albums were been performed live in front of an audience, but don't necessarily have to be culled from a single performance. • No EPs or singles—this list is about albums • We decided to limit this list to music, which means no [...]

It seemed for several years as if Richard Davies was going to be another casualty of the music business: A wildly talented performer with a rabid cult of fans but little commercial success, forced to take a day job to make ends meet. No one can fault a guy for wanting to be able to make a living, but the loss to the creative world is a blow. He left behind as strong a back catalog as any artist recording in the 90s, from the work of his Australian band the Moles to his bliss-inducing (and list-topping) [...]

It's a big week, kids. Jay Leno returns to late night, or more accurately, late evening. His new primetime show debuts this week and he's lined up some big names. Even if you're not a fan of his, you have to give him props for scoring Jay-Z with Rihanna and Kanye on Monday and Bruce Hornsby and Eric Clapton on Friday. Not too shabby. Also of note is the return of Carson Daly, whose show I fully expected to just dissolve seeing as he'd been in reruns for months now. Alas, he's back with a pretty good lineup (Metric anyone?). [...]

Jay Leno returns to the airwaves this week with The Jay Leno Show (NBC, 10PM) and in addition to the star power of Jerry Seinfeld, Tom Cruise, Robin Williams and Drew Barrymore, Leno has lined up some serious musical acts for his first week. Jay-Z, with Kanye West and Rihanna, will join Leno for his first show on Monday followed by teeny bopper Miley Cyrus on Wednesday and a fantastic combo of Eric Claption and Bruce Hornsby on Thursday. Monday , September 14 [...]

This week, we have the long overdue Cover Wars debut from legendary British rockers Dire Straits. Sultans Of Swing was the band's first single off their first album, which was self-titled and released in 1978. In The Fender Stratocaster Handbook: How To Buy, Maintain, Set Up, Troubleshoot, and Modify Your Strat , Mark Knopfler shares how Sultans Of Swing almost had an entirely different melody, funny to think if the song would have still been popular with the alternate structure. Knopfler says no. I originally [...]

It seems Daniel Johnston's going for a hi-fi sound on the forthcoming Is and Always Was , the legendary (and at one-time solitary) songwriter/artist's first proper collection in six years. Shifting things up, Johnston worked closely with Beck/Brendan Benson/Eric Matthews/Paul McCartney/etcx collaborator and former Jellyfish member Jason Falkner on the 11 tracks. Falkner also produced. You can get a taste of the fuller sound on "Freedom." There are backups, slide guitar, well-oiled drums and the like, but his voice/lyrics remain the focal point. Anyway, fans of those early, affecting bedroom recordings shouldn't fret: The ostensible album art is bare [...]

BIG week in the Bay. With several Outside Lands After-parties and the festival itself , there is no shortage of things to do here. Also a visit from Ted Leo, a record release party, and a country music legend stops by an unlikely venue. Tonight we have The Matches playing the final date off their tour with Judgement Day and Dizzy Balloon at the Fillmore, Six Organs of Admittance and Master Musicians of Bukkake rock The Independent, Fleet Foxes drummer and creator of [...]

By: David SchultzIn Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser's expose on all facets of the fast food industry, he confronts the fact that McDonald's does an incredible amount of business despite the low nutritional value of their food. Basically, McDonald's tastes good and it tastes good because it's designed and engineered to taste good. Schlosser's thoughts popped into my head while listening to Big

Frankel , "Anonymity Is the New Fame" ( Autumn Tone ) — It must be the doubled vocals, but there seems to be two of Michael Orendy (aka Frankel) on his sophomore album — a guy who beams proudly at his latest orchestral constructs and a guy who cherishes the safety, and anonymity, of the bedroom where you imagine he does his work. The L.A. songwriter's arrangements are like fine jewelry; in fact, they're almost inlaid, playing acoustic guitar and vaguely world-weary vocals off gentle swells of electric agitation and atmospherics. It gives his meditations a feel [...]

Not surprisingly, Michael Jackson covers have been coming fast and furious these past few days. Whatever you thought of the man, you can't deny the music. CoverLayDown's got a good round-up of what's already been done, so we're going to try something a little different. Michael passed on Thursday afternoon. By concert time that evening, artists were already beginning to bust out Jackson songs in tribute, a trend that only intensified over the weekend. So here are some of those live covers, recordings of tributes performed since Jackson's death. They're in turns [...]
When Crowded House reunited in 2007 after a 12 year absence they made one of their first North American television appearances on Austin City Limits. Neil Finn and the boys ran through a number of their greatest hits and a few chestnuts off of their new-at-the-time album Time On Earth. PBS will air a repeat showing of Crowded House on Austin City Limits this weekend, so be sure to check your local listings for the exact time and station. Friday , June 26 [all times Eastern]: [...]

Did I grab your attention with that headline? Good. Orange has put together a very nifty giveaway for this year's Glastonbury . You simply guess where in his field a bull named Desmond (yes, a real bull) will be at 3pm every day. They've set it up like a kind of grid, so you essentially pick a square and let the dice fall where they may. They have 18 pairs of tickets, so you certainly have more than one chance to get it right. Take your shot here . They have a 'bull cam' and have [...]
