The Pixies are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of the classic 1989 album, Doolittle , with a massive tour featuring a stunning visual production. The US tour kicks off on Wednesday in Hollywood, and the band will put their production on display on The Tonight Show stage on Friday night, While many wonder when the alt-rock legends will record something new, the band seems fully content to coast on their elevated past, which isn't a bad thing. If they can't create new songs that fit in the canon, then it's [...]
Taut and skritchy, this is some top quasi-Middle Eastern jazz. I say "quasi" because Topaz, Friedlander's band for this project, is half American and half Japanese. I'm very fond of the way Wire seems to bounce between composed and improvised sections. It's taken from the 2003 album Quake . Erik Friedlander - Wire (alternate download)
Another year of (mostly) daily tunes here at Doklands, and I have to say I'm still having fun with this. I considered winding this up after hitting 1,000 tracks because really, how much is there left to say? Glad I didn't, though. Nik Bärtsch's Ronin - Modul 38-17 Miriam Makeba - Jol'inkomo Bishop Allen - Psycho Killer Oysterband - Road To Nowhere MGMT - This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) Geoffrey Oryema - Listening Wind The Staple Singers - Life During Wartime The Staple Singers - Slippery [...]
Mick Jagger has never lived down saying 30 + years ago " " If I'm singing 'Satisfaction' when I'm 40, I'm going to kill myself ". Yoko Ono is now 76 years old and she just released a 15-track CD of new material recorded with her Plastic Ono Band. The new disc, Between My Head and the Sky , was recorded at Sear Sound, the same studio that used to house the old Hit Factory (where Double Fantasy was recorded). Sean Lennon both produced with Yoko and [...]

MUSIC NEWS - From Fluxus and performance-art pioneer and Two Virgins to chart-topping dance-music heroine (inspiring punk rock along the way!), Yoko Ono has been an innovative and influential force on music and art, while simultaneously campaigning for peace on the world's stage. At 76 years young, Yoko continues to kick butt -- and is preparing to release her new, BETWEEN MY HEAD AND THE SKY [...]

Yesterday's post already mentioned the percussion wiz Cyro Baptista's upcoming album with his Banquet of the Spirits troupe. It's no secret Cyro loves huge ensembles that's why I guess he decided to transfer Banquet of the Spirits from a quartet to a 26-strong ensemble including Rashanim's Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz (who was formerly on the BotS quartet as well alongside Brian Marsella and Tim Keiper), cellist Erik Friedlander , Ikue Mori and members from his previous Beat/Love the Donkey ensemble Sergio Brandão and Anat Cohen among others . We're always excited with whatever Cyro touches his hands, [...]

Since the closing of LES spot Tonic in 2007 , The Stone has been one of the venues that's attempted to fill the void left by the experimental-music-friendly space. Like Tonic did, The Stone frequently brings on guest curators (not coincidentally Stone founder John Zorn was one of Tonic's most regular hosts and played at Tonic's final show). Now, with guitarist Grey Gersten 's monthlong May curatorial run ending Sunday, May 31st, former Tonic co-owner Melissa Caruso Scott comes out of [...]
I know exactly what you're wondering. You want to know what Erik Friedlander does when he's not part of the Masada String Trio. Don't ask how I know. It's uncanny. As luck would have it, I have the answer for you: he makes music exactly like this. Chanting is taken from his 2006 album Prowl , recorded with his band Topaz. It's got a swoony melody, African-influenced percussion, and progresses from dreamy to euphoric without you noticing. Lovely. Erik Friedlander - Chanting [...]
John Zorn knows how to throw a good party. You know how it is: you get drunk, pass out behind the sofa and wake up the next morning unable to remember a thing. Zorn found a solution to this. His 50th birthday celebrations lasted an entire month and were marked by a series of concerts that would eventually be released on 12 albums. A record contract may not be everyone's ideal solution to the problem of alcoholic amnesia, but for Zorn I think it could be considered a success. From the first of those [...]
Friedlander shows us again why he's such a scary good whack jazz cellist. "Erik Friedlander can do things with a cello that should have a reasonable listener fearing for her life."That quote came not from the Lester Bangs of whack jazz Mark Saleski, but from none other than Pitchforkmedia.com. There aren't that many cellists -- much less whack jazz cellists -- who get any kind of attention from a site more in tune with...

Cellist Erik Friedlander combines a dash of Oscar with a pinch of Herbie and somehow manages to produce a whole lotta Django.

Joan as Policewoman will play shows at 8 and 10 pm at the Stone in NYC on New Years Eve. The 'Annual End The Year Improv Night' with John Zorn happens at the same venue three nights earlier. Paris put me way behind on writing. And since most of these records came via digital copies from the publicists, and since my computer crapped out on me (thanks Mac!) after I downloaded them, I haven't really spent a lot of time with any of these releases yet….but here's some information. Take it for what it's worth (very little). Parts & Labor and The Sea and Cake are my picks for the week. New Music Releases 10/21/08: Records I've Heard: AC/DC : [...]

Here are The Wheel's Still In Spin 's suggested new releases. +/- {Plus Minus} – Xs On Your Eyes | CD or MP3 Download "Snowblind" (mp3) Xs On Your Eyes does not use as much of the electronic tones as previous +/- albums. Instead it showcases layers of more traditional rock music with horns and strings. The result is a [...]

Of Montreal's Skeletal Lamping is out today in a dizzying array of formats (including t-shirts and totebags). What the week lacks in star power it makes up in quality releases. From what has already crossed my path, I can recommend +/-'s Xs on Your Eyes , The Dears' Missiles , Herman Düne's Next Year in Zion , Parts & Labor's Receivers , Pit Er Pat's High Time , Sebastian Grainger's [...]
