Drums Play Spaceland Monday Night (and It's Free) Ray Davies put on a fantastic show on Saturday night at the Orpheum. If you get a chance to see him on this tour do not hesitate. More on that later. Another great week this week. If you're into buzz bands you might want to check out Drums tonight, The Big Pink on Wednesday, Tape Deck Mountain on Thursday, Neon Indian on Friday and The XX on Saturday. Some of those will be good, but I'm recommending a variety of [...]

We're supposedly heading into a slower time of year for live music-- holidays, weather, and the slow new release calendar from here on out are all partially responsible. You'd never know it, though, looking at this week's calendar, featuring long established names like Mission of Burma, They Might Be Giants, Pinback, Black Heart Procession, Erin McKeown, and The Pixies (in Eugene, but not in Black Francis' garage). Heck, even B.B. King's dropping by this week. So with a group like that on the way, we're pretty happy to be able offer up tickets for grabs to a [...]

Multi-instrumentalist/pianist Seth Glier , discovered at 19 and signed to MPress Records makes his label debut with 'The Trouble With People' , now available in stores. MUST-SEE SHOW: 11/23 Jay Reatard @ Brillobox This is worth going to if only to see what all the fuss is about. I've been reading about this guy nonstop over the past couple years, but for some reason, I thought he was a teenager. Turns out he's 29. A few weeks ago he tweeted that his entire band quit on him. Hopefully they'll have their shit together by the time the Brillobox show rolls around. ALSO WORTH ATTENDING: 11/4 OK Go @ Mr. Small's [...]

Hey, if you've been watching the RSS feed, you know I just did some serious housekeeping with the Drake's Takes , and now, for a brief moment, I'm back up to date (we'll see how long that lasts). This week, Drake spotlights the new one from The Flaming Lips , but if you've been reading bumpershine closely over the last couple of months, you know that last week I was most excited about the US Release of Fanfarlo 's brilliant debut "Reservoir". -ed. We're rapidly approaching the point of no return for releases [...]

Today's soundtrack is the new Erin Mckeown record, 'Hundreds Of Lions.' It's one of the most playful folk records you will ever listen to. Ms McKeown writes incredibly clever songs that you will find yourself singing to yourself long after listening. * 'To A Hammer' MP3

Hundreds of Lions has teeth (and, at times, too many). Erin McKeown is one of a few contemporary folksingers who has transcended the pigeonhole that traps most of her comrades. It's hard-earned, though, over many releases and tours with the likes of Josh Ritter and Ani diFranco, on whose label Hundreds of Lions appears. Some of her transcendence comes from her songwriting talent: she excels at writing songs that are just oblique enough to be quirky and fresh while still being universal. However, her success...

We're rapidly approaching the point of no return for releases this year, but mid-October always seems to toss a couple wrenches in folks' year end list plans. The latest from The Flaming Lips fall in that category - you think Pitchfork might want an amendment to their 'Best Albums of the 2000s'? Toss the new one from Neon Indian in as well, in that regard. Elswewhere, there are fine/interesting/worthy releases from Har Mar Superstar , Thao and the Get Down Stay Down , The Heavy , Erin McKeown , Fanfarlo [...]

Not quite the stellar lineup of releases this week, but there are still some great records to be had with The Flaming Lips' latest, Embryonic leading the pack. Also not to be completely overshadowed are releases from Thao Nguyen , Neon Indian , Imaad Wasif , Grant-Lee Phillips , and Fanfarlo who's debut finally get a proper US release after being available digitally for what feels like forever. As always, feel free to recommend anything I may have missed. [...]

Long before Katy Parry came to the air waves, Jill Sobule was the one experimenting and kissing girls. In fact, in August, Jill ripped into Katy for borrowing her title . As an MTV kid in the early 90s, I loved Sobule's cutesy ode to experimentation. Granted, I haven't kept up with her since then and have apparently missed albums 3-8, the most recent released earlier this year (and to generally quite positive reviews). With Jill comes Erin McKeown . The jazzy cabaret/rock/swing/folkster has toured with Andrew Bird, Ani DiFranco, Josh Ritter, and released her [...]
