Winter will soon be upon us, which means more layered clothing and less outdoor activities. If you're like me, the thought of transitioning from the warm and energizing days of summer to the frostbitten and melancholy days of winter is as shocking as stepping from a sauna into a popsicle. Fortunately, for our emotional well-being, little reminders of summer pop up periodically during these frigid months and warm things up a bit. Land of Talk did just that. The opening band, a Los Angeles power-pop quartet called Eulogies , merely broke the silence [...]
my apologies for the late post today, but a night of carousing on the town and the almighty flu bug are to blame. anyhow, here's a serving of some saucy, sing-along rock n' roll to cure any of tonight's shortcomings. [Sorry this is a little late today — tech problems in Buzz Bands land ...] Brooklyn three-piece the Antlers , riding a wave of critical love from Pitchfork (among others) for their album "Hospice," are about to embark on a big tour supporting Minus the Bear (including a Tuesday date at the Glass House in Pomona). On Sunday, October 4, inside the Salvation Army church, we said goodbye to Jon Guthrie. And I want to talk about that but first I want to talk about saying hello to him. I first met Jon when he was around 11 years old. This would have been around 1994 or so. I was working at Wuxtry Records in downtown Athens and Jon's dad, the estimable Michael Guthrie, was a friend of the owners [...]
They say one is the loneliest number, but they sure have written a ton of songs about it (including that classic tune of the same name, that you won't find here, because I don't like it). The best one has to be Okkervil River's 'Plus Ones', in which Will Sheff cleverly references a bunch of well known songs, adding 'one' each time to create his own version. No one wants to hear about your 97th tear... And no one wants a tune about the 100th luftballoon... [...]
Wesley Willis Wesley Willis was one of a kind. I discovered him in the mid-'90s through the college radio station where I worked. Rock 'N' Roll Will Never Die — one of dozens of albums in Willis' discography — was a big favorite at the station. Each song featured basically the same music, a keyboard demo song in various keys and speeds. (24 songs of this recalls the Greensleeves Rhythm Album dancehall reggae compilations, [...]
Led by Peter Walker on guitar and vocals, Eulogies is a full-band effort fueled also by Drew Phillips on guitar, Garrett Deloian on bass and Chris Reynolds on drums and vocals. Eulogies' tunes shoot straight-forward in structure, appealing as simple overall. Yet there's a hidden complexity accompanied by Walker's intellectually kicked-around lyrics which pervades Eulogies' songs. Walker's surreal, lush vocals occasionally tremble with gentle vibratto and lean curiously languid over the band's oft-driving beats, affording the tunes an ironically steely, removed, movie-soundtrack quality. It feels like it could be contentment, as though Walker has just eaten [...]

Set times have been announced for this weekend's Sunset Strip Music Festival , a three-day affair highlighted by Saturday's party on Sunset Boulevard. The street will be closed on Saturday between Doheny Drive and San Vicente Boulevard to accommodate two outdoors stages — with music going on inside the Roxy and the Key Club, there will be plenty to justify the $39.50 ticket price. The festival also announced that L.A. City and County firefighters get in free. [Pictured: L.A.'s Shiny Toy Guns , performing on the East Stage at 5 p.m.] After the jump, the set [...]
Mervyn Gould,,, RIP...
When I was at the Brighton Colour out of Space festival recently (see below - too tired to post more links!), I received a phone call to inform me that my dear friend Mervyn Gould had died from a heart attack a couple of days before, linked apparently to his diabetes problems. I had only spoken to him on the Tuesday that week and taken a rain check (a phrase he would have hated! - 'An Americanism, dear boy!') on meeting him the next day because I was busy. We agreed to convene on my return to the [...]

EULOGIESHere Anonymous
for their sophomore album Here Anonymous Eulogies simply let the album write itself. not to sound as if they are musical geniuses, the band trusted in their abilities. lead singer and guitarist Peter Walker explains that "self-limitation is such a good thing: it lets you dig in a little bit more instead of changing things for every mood or song, it forces you to manipulate what you have in your hand rather than try to grab at something else". the Los Angeles-based quartet (also including Garrett Deloian - bass, Drew Phillips [...]
