As I mentioned the other day, I got invited to see the lovely Anna Rose at Hotel Cafe tonight and jumped at the chance to take my new camera for a spin. (Side note: Must learn how to use my new camera.) Anyway, it was a fun time.... Rose, a self-proclaimed music geek has a powerful voice for a tiny lady and easily charmed the crowd. She performed several of the songs off her new album Nomad , including Picture, [...]
We thought we'd segue into the new year with a new video for a track we liked last year. The song is Island 's No You Don't which was one of our key tracks off their 2009 album [...]

Today's program was composed entirely of albums that were released in the year 2009. The last nine songs on the show constituted my favourite nine releases from 2009. While re-issues were included in the list ( The Beatles Remasters, Nirvana's Bleach 20th Anniversary Edition , and The Vaselines - Enter The Vaselines ), I did not count them in the top nine list, due to the fact that they have already been released prior to 2009. The following are my favourite nine releases from the year 2009: 1. The Black Lips - 200 Million [...]

This began as an epic idea: We should get all of WW 's freelancers to report on their crazy New Year's Eve parties, thus painting a kaleidoscopic picture of the whole Portland nightlife at the end of the decade. But as it happened, only five people signed up for the project. And one of them wrote an elaborate, non-bloggy review . Some of the others were out-of-town, partying at friends' houses or overlapping at the same venues we were for the evening. Some people just wanted to get drunk and not think about writing. But the four of [...]
OURS FOR YOURS: Having already exhumed our jazz picks for the year , here's a list of off-topic items that have excited us over the last 12 months. A peek behind the curtain of our other interests. We're also extremely curious about what's affected you this year. We look forward to reading your highlights in the comments. DREW LeDREW (aka JEFF GOLICK): SCOTT PILGRIM [...]
Can't believe it's already been a decade. I'm trying to think about the person I used 2 be back in 1999. I wonder how familiar I am with that bro, or how much I respect him. Theoretically, I have grown up and become a more 'cultured' person with a developed+refined taste in all aspects of life, including my favourite music. Piecing together 'The Best Albums/Artists/Songs/Bands of the Decade' seems tricky, like some sort of existential reflection of urself. I feel like most websites that focus on music create 'best of year/decade' [...]

Actionslacks - "Kids With Guitars" Seasoned SF indie band Actionslacks are still rocking after fifteen years, and tomorrow night celebrate their decade-and-a-half anniversary at Bottom of the Hill (9pm, $8, online tickets ). Supporting acts include Love is Chemicals and Ex-Boyfriends . The show's also the band's only live performance of 2009, and they'll be playing songs from their entire discography. The quartet's latest EP, Kids With Guitars , came out earlier this year, and they're currently working on [...]

THE BEST COMICS OF THE DECADE: Part Three: 2004 Today, a whole post dedicated to one year. 2004 began the current comic book renaissance (which blossomed fully in 2005), and it takes an entire post just to cover this one year. And most of the reason was Marvel. Let's get started. Superman/Batman #1-6 Jeph [...]

If it's one thing I'm not, it's a hater. I just believe that if you're actually really good at something, you should give that your all and not try to spread yourself too thin. If a barber, you should cut hair. Snip those ends and trim those fades with everything you've got. If you're a pizza delivery driver, damn it, drive those pies like your life depended on it, Jeff Gordon style. On this first installment of "People Who Should…," I'll try to convince Soulja Boy that he should stick to what he does best, rapping, and leave [...]
After spending a large part of 2009 having to deal with the embarrassment of having everyone know (and freely share their opinions and concerns) about a certain Grammy night ordeal, you would think that Rihanna, one of the decade's top singles artist, would deliver an upbeat fourth album lead-off single that was all shades of game-changing kick-ass to succinctly remind the masses of how she really became a household name in the first place. Instead, as the first taste of the November-set Rated R , Ri-Ri has oddly chosen to give us a [...]
Its hard to believe that forty years ago in 1969, The Kinks first released their album Arthur (Or The Decline of The British Empire). It was released following their album The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society , that upon it's initial release sold poorly. Since then Village Green has gone on to become a cult classic and many Kinks fans favourite Kinks album, but people often overlook Arthur . It is based upon a concept revolving around Arthur, who moves to Australia from England with his wife after World War II. The [...]

On the whole the Proclaimers show that they still have a lot more to offer the world than equations of love and mileage. It's been 21 years since the Reid twins first charted the single by which they will forever be known, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)." Used in movies, commercials, and on mixtapes everywhere as an expression of the lengths pining ex-boyfriends and speechless romantics are willing to go for love, the song has become synonymous with the Proclaimers. While most people outside the boggy reaches of Scotland wrote them off as one-hit wonders, Craig and Charlie Reid [...]

I think it's kind of amazing that when you search "air" on google , Air the band is the first hit. Internet, you're telling me this electronic pop duo from France is more important that that fundamental life-sustaining stuff we breathe? Strike one. Don't get me wrong--Air (the French band!) rules. I bought this in high school on some kind of maxi single thing that had like six different versions of the song, which was part of the soundtrack for The Virgin Suicides [...]

Why?- Eskimo Snow (Album Review) Eskimo Snow arrives on the same train of thought that brought us last year's Alopecia – both were written and recorded over the same period, and elaborate the same knotty relationship with mortality – but it's smaller, darker, more obsessively intimate by a long shot. No veneer of abstraction or altruism here, no space for anything or anybody but Yoni Wolf, a character whose contours and psychopathologies are honed into ever sharper relief. Not a stitch of rap, either, but it's hard to miss it at this point – [...]

Today's program showcased two tracks from the newest release by Arctic Monkeys. The songs come from the bands third full length album which is titled Humbug . The album differs from the bands other two albums for a variety of reasons. For one, a large majority the album was produced and recorded by Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age) at his own Joshua Tree Studios in California. The band also recorded songs with producer James Ford, three of which are featured on Humbug ("My Propeller", "Secret Door", and "Cornerstone"). Secondly the music reflects a darker [...]
Why don't we start this catch up post with pics (and a video that I didn't take) from the Clips last show at Olio a few weeks back. Hopefully, you made it out to bid adieu to one of Vancouver's finest (though, if you didn't, they'll be back with new songs, and a slightly new line up). And now a fast forward recap of other notable stuff: - I caught Walter TV, Makeout Videotape, and Recreation last Thursday. I'd seen Make out Videotape before, but the sound was sort of abysmal at the show I caught. [...]

After the implosion of The Sex Pistols, John Lydon went on to form a new group who would be titled, Public Image Limited. Forming in 1978, the group consisted of John Lydon on vocals, Jah Wobble on bass, Keith Levene on guitar and Jim Walker on drums. Wobble had been a friend of Lydon's since their school days while Levene, had previously been in an early incarnation of The Clash. Another interesting fact is that the bands original drummer, was in fact Canadian. Jim Walker had been in the Canadian Punk band The Furies and after moving to London, he [...]

My First Earthquake - "Cool in the Cool Way" This weekend, hear some decidedly un-grunge tunes at a venue full of divey appeal. Synth popsters My First Earthquake will be playing tracks from their party-perfect album, Downstairs , at Thee Parkside on Saturday. The band is steadily gaining attention for their catchy tunes and spot-on social observations, and this dryly witty video doesn't hurt either. My First Earthquake will be joined by catchy indie-pop-rock trio Ex-Boyfriends and Vitamin Party , who [...]
