Two bands return to the pages of 20JFG today each bringing their own assimilation of machine music to bear on a suspecting world. Each responding to the past with snatches of sounds from machines long dead, arranged, repurposed and re-slaved to the beat. Excepter return to beguile with their ghostly ...

Recommended Show: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2009 SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS @ MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG 66 North 6th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $20, 8PM With this being the start of the weekend and CMJ still going on, there should be some good shows tonight. There are some pretty good ones, but nothing so amazing as to be obvious. However, School of Seven Bells performance at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight should be pretty memorable--and just off the beaten path enough that badge holders MIGHT be able to get in without too much hassle. [...]

The tracks on "Alternation" fittingly alternate in style and length, with some tracks being over six and seven minutes while some struggle to get to the two minute mark. At every point during "Alternation", there is a very different sound that Excepter is trying to cultivate. There are hints of sixties pop, alternative, surf, and [...]
This week may provide the greatest variety of music releases all year. From Sufjan Stevens' debut classical work, The BQE to Jay Farrar and Benjamin Gibbard's collaborative effort One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Music From Kerouac's Big Sur to Things About Comin' My Way - A Tribute to The Mississippi Sheiks , the week's release list is filled with variety. The week is deep in quality releases, from what I have already heard I can strongly recommend The Atlas [...]

http://www.flickr.com/photos/l etfunbegin/ / CC BY 2.0 The 2009 record release season pretty much comes to an end this week, but here is everything left to come out this year that I'm interested in checking out. I also linked each release with the best possible preview or review of it that I could find, so click on anything you're interested in and learn about it: October 20: Atlas Sound Logos Dark Meat [...]

The temperatures are beginning to drop and the leaves are turning. This inevitably means Halloween is nearly upon us. I love the music that is typically associated with "fall" and what better way to celebrate than a continuation of our annual Halloween Compilation? In typical spooky form we've added an additional 13 songs to the list this year. Enjoy and feel free to discuss your favorite Hallweenesque songs in the comments section. Also, don't forget to register for the third annual March of 1000 Skeletons which will be happening October 24th in downtown Oklahoma [...]

CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

the fly girlz - "born 2 b fly" (stream only) Great track from a few 14-year old girls from Brooklyn. Sam Hillmer (of the band Z's ) put together a program where he works with city high school kids to help them record their own songs, featuring production by Nathan "Zebrablood" from Excepter . They have a limited 12" out now through True Panther Sounds , which you can buy here . The Fader has a great little documentary about the project here . I [...]
