Beginning this week, Woodhands will hit the road this fall for a 17-date journey through the United States and Canada with Canadian indie/electronic group, the Junior Boys . So, what's the occasion? It's all anticipation of their forthcoming sophomore studio album, of course! According to an issued press release, the duo of Paul Banwatt and Dan Werb plan to unveil its second album, Remorsecapade, on January 26, 2010. The album, a follow-up to 2008's Heart Attack, will be distributed through Paper Bag Records . The band also contributed a remix [...]

iLiKETRAiNS The Saturday dawned bright and clear. Weather reports promised a scorching day. And SoundsXP pitied the bands playing in the midday sun. First of these was Belfast's The Vals , whose perky, sparkly pop was a great beginning for the day, despite the sound being a bit damp at times. Lots of people apparently hear Beatles influences, but for the life of me I didn't hear any of that. Rather, (and rather predictably) the [...]

The nomucho label / collective is born in Santiago – Chile in the mid 2005 by the hand of the mentally disordered artists/performers/promoters/e xplorers Leo D. and Rolando Si, left and right halfs of the electronic mental punk band Jefferson Family. This label is set to promote via internet (mp3) and events (live performances) the new developing artists in the underground minimal techno and maximal house scene in Chile and foreign friends. Nomucho is not rigid in it's musical line, but the spirit of the label is the never ending search for new kinds of deepness, method experimentation and mental exploration [...]

Flying to the moon 400 years ago seems palpably idiotic to most people. Yet incredible as it may seem, one of the greatest scientific minds of the time, Dr John Wilkins, Brother-in-Law to Oliver Cromwell and a founder of the Royal Society, was planning his own lunar mission four centuries ago around the time of the English Civil War. 17th century England was experiencing a great renaissance in the realms of science and discovery during the 1600's. Coffee House Society swept the intelligencia and the very mood of conversation had changed. At the time when coffee first [...]

Andrew W.K. has announced plans to tour with chamber ensemble the Calder Quartet . The unlikely pairing will perform a mix of traditional standards and improvisations at a week's worth of shows kicking off September 29th. The project was born from a performance at the Wordless Music Series in New York City, where A.W.K. and Calder Quartet had original works commissioned by The Explorers Club and performed at the club's annual dinner. Metal Edge Magazine witnessed the show and commented "It was strange as hell and it pretty much ruled." [...]

SPOTIFY LINK: The Explorers Club- Freedom Wind I'll get this out of the way now, The Explorers Club sound so much like the Beach Boys it's close to pastiche. But the songs are far too well produced, the harmonies too tight, melodies so sunsoaked and infectious to simply dismiss. And to sound like The Wilson's plus Mike Lowe is certainly not the worst direction for a band to make. It's actually the softer songs on the second half of the album that reveals there is more to [...]
One day, around the age of 11, I was playing around on the piano and found a chord progression that was simply mesmerizing. I played it over and over, convinced that I had found some magic formula. Here was the snippet: sample Of course, I never did anything with it, and later I found other songs with the exact same chord progression: Chicago's "Saturday in the Park," Lenny Kravitz's "Let Love Rule" and the Beatles' "You Won't See Me." In the following medley of those songs, notice that the fifth note [...]

:: Artist Profile :: Artist Profile :: Artist Profile :: Artist Profile :: "This is refreshing. This might be beyond refreshing. This is like a tall, cool Arnold Palmer on a hot summer day. This is The Explorers Club. Let's break it down: This six-piece band hails from South Carolina. They make up one of the eight artists on their record label, Dead Oceans...but none of that is really important. [...]

Holy cow...there's truly a lot a happening with Junior Boys right now that it borders on the edge of insanity. With the following lines you'll be pleased with the dates & cities the Junior Boys will hit, while crossing the North American continent. Take advantage of these remaining dates for they will be heading of to Europe for the summer and won't be back until there's frost on the ground. I'm still going through the gigabytes of mostly crap from SXSW festival (just got to the letter "P"); what was such a pleasant surprise last year is turning into a neverending chore that makes me wonder if any artists still have talent. Never fear, though, for I am banking hope on two upcoming releases: Amanda Leigh - Mandy Moore. Yes, that Mandy Moore - the cute former teeny-bopper who seems to have dated everybody famous (although I think she just tied the knot with singer Ryan Adams). Her [...]

The Explorers Club - Do You Love Me? I wish I could say my house was a 'bit of a mess' and not know the understatement of it. Had a date last night on the coast with Sarah(York). We're putting the hometown in brackets to help distinguish between my ex-housemate Sarah who invited me to the midnight picnic / politically incorrect party . Pretty random date precedence (was actually out with Sarah at the time) but I had a great time - she's definitely worth getting to know more. [...]
BEATY BROTHERS PRODUCTIONS BEATY BROTHERS BAND: There's certainly an interesting history of honkers that come from Texas, settle in New York and make progressive honk and skronk their chosen métier with critical darling results. These twins brought their saxes and trombones from Texas to the Big Apple and are now honking away with grand glee after overcoming some hardships that had nothing to do with the move to the big city. Progressive/moderns that know how to work a groove into the proceedings, these cats are definitely rising stars on the horizon and this engaging date is sure to leave [...]

Drowned in Sound reviews one of my favorite music books of all time, Alex Ross's The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the 20th Century . One of the deeply satisfying things about this book – for the passive reader – is that it's possible to follow the various arguments based on quantitative evidence of changing tastes (e.g. of more or less consonant / dissonant music composed across the twentieth century, as well as the actual performance of more or less traditional / old / canonical music by repertory orchestras [...]
