Since 2002, The Raveonettes have been knocking our socks off with their unique blend of 50s motorcycle cool, 60s girl group pop, and smutty guitar fuzz. It's hard to believe that their debut EP, "Whip It On", is already seven years old, but the Raveonettes have never been the kind of band that shoves their successes in our faces. They seem to just quietly go about their business and - a rarity in the music world - keep getting better and better. With last month's release of their fourth full-length album (not to mention a goodly handful of [...]

All I really know about Surfer Blood is that they are from Florida and I like everything I've heard by them so far. Oh yeah they also have a Twitter account so you should follow them. They post a lot of pictures. Surfer Blood are a band from West Palm Beach, Florida. Mostly unheard of before the 2009 CMJ marathon, the band played 12 shows where they got serious buzz. Their forthcoming album, Astro Coast was recorded in their dorm room at the University of Florida and is due on January 19 [...]

Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are means so much to so many generations that Spike Jonze's film adaptation couldn't be just a typical kids' movie — it had to be a movie for the entire family. And on every part of the production, Jonze worked with artists so close to him that they might as well have been a family: while bringing the book's story to the big screen, he developed a tight friendship with Sendak; for Where the Wild Things Are's music, Jonze recruited former lover and frequent collaborator Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. In turn, [...]

And so we've reached the last three months of the calendar year, known in the world of music as the Fourth Quarter. It's the last chance for bands and labels to make an impression, pocket a bit of cash, and maybe, just maybe, earn a sport on those illustrious year-end lists. As usually the case with these types of things, we got a lot of music to look forward to... with a heavy emphasis on "a lot." Fortunately, as it's usually the case with these types of things, we got you covered. Below, you'll find an extensive and [...]

Okay if you haven't been completely dominating Steven Colbert's bandwidth for the last eight hours or so there is something wrong with you. Why? Because as many of you know the Flaming Lip's new album Embryonic is streaming on ColbertNation.com in its entirety, and will be until Monday night. That means you should hurry and listen as many times as possible. The Lip's also performed a convincing version of "Convinced of the Hex" on Colbert last night. I hope they add quite a few of these new songs to [...]
Director: Tomas Alfredson Release Date: 29 July Review by Paul Metcalf Movie making is an art, and the movies produced are like any painting on a canvas or a work of literature such as a poem or a novel. When a movie is bad and disliked it's just like a bad painting - we don't want to see it. If the movie is good though, it can be the most exciting thing in the world to the viewer. Even if it's just [...]

Just thought I would post something completely different for me - just to show you that I have range. Yeah, I have range... So this song, "Spy/Glass House", is something I first heard over at Captain Obvious' blog when he posted the video for this particular track ( HERE ) and it totally caught me. I can appreciate a track that is both catchy and completely visceral. This song contains both those aspects - it feels full of energy and ready to kick your ass, but still has enough sense to make you nod [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Peter Murphy's debut novel John the Revelator is filled with lyrical prose, dark humor, and a remarkable degree of humanity. This coming of age story is the most engaging and adventurous debut novel I have read all year. The Guardian wrote of the book: "An Irish music writer, Peter Murphy casts his debut novel like a blues noir, steeped in the music that [...]

The Clips haven't played in Vancouver since November of last year, so I'm really excited that they agreed to play Damaged Goods this coming Friday. If you've heard their record or seen them live, I probably don't need to say much more than that. I'm going to optimistically suggest that you should get there early, because this really should be a packed show. Regulars: July 20th - July 26th Monday Skinny Mondays @ the Biltmore: unknown (looking for a [...]

The Feral Children and White Rabbits (shown above) are two groups who are at their best calibur during their shows; their music and talent cannot truly be believed unless witnessed in person. Both are heavily instrumental bands with a multi-percussionist backbone, and both have a fiercly spirited way of playing their version of indie rock. These bands brought their sound to life Monday night at the Crocodile with a vivacious enthusiasm. read more

White Rabbits Rocked the Croc The White Rabbits have only one criterion for those who tour with them: have at least two drummers at all times . Kicking off Monday night's show at the Crocodile here in Seattle, the Feral Children brought the double thunder to the stage, splitting the percussion responsibilities between the lead singer and the actual drummer. I'm not sure if these guys just need to update their MySpace page or what, but I was pleasantly surprised with last night's performance. Lots [...]

They really killed it Friday night, Handsome Furs . The electro-power-rock couple put on a scintillating set at Neumos that had me and everyone else wishing for more. I'll get my one complaint out of the way: why the truncated set, Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry? The duo played 10 songs, including two encore cuts, and left out notable Face Control tracks "Thy Will Be Done" (which would've amped the joint) and "Officer of Hearts", not to mention Plague Park 's most popular song, "What We Had". Boeckner and his wife, for their part, [...]
