A Classic Education A Classic Education are a six-piece band from Bologna, Italy whose epic melodramas seem to attracting much attention. They played Indietracks in 2008 and are frequent visitors to London and further afield. Following a trip to CMJ in New York in October, they're back in the UK this month: they play at the Lexington on 26 November and the Buffalo Bar the following night. They have released two records: an [...]

Dave Dupuis is familiar figure to Eastside clubgoers, and not just for his head of hair, which seems to occupy the whole room. Dupuis, who plays guitar in Film School and was a sound man at Spaceland and for several bands (including Silversun Pickups ), recently debuted his new band, the trio Nightmare Air . It features Film School drummer and longtime friend James Smith and bassist-singer and fellow New Hampshire native Swaan Miller, and it's not just their local associations that have ears turning. Nightmare Air's freakout-meets-space rock sounds like a Silversun Pickups vs. No [...]
The reddened interior of the Savoy cinema is a broth of hormones and anticipation as a few hundred school girls squeal piercingly as the curtains roll back for the preview screening of New Moon , the Twilight sequel. Security has been tight. All mobile phones and iPods have been confiscated on arrival and sealed in ziplock bags. That the film is on general release in 48 hours from then matters little to the stern protectors of this humungous cinema cash cow. It was never going to work out between us and New Moon . Perhaps [...]
Billy Jam says: New Jersey explorer, writer, photographer, filmmaker, welder, artist, skateboarder, avid Passaic River canoe traveler, graffiti lover, urban anthropologist, prankster, high school dropout, WFMU listener, Weird NJ contributor, and as he calls himself "run of the mill trespasser" are all titles befitting Wheeler Antabanez who will be a guest on WFMU today (Nov 20th 3-6pm) on Put The Needle On The Record when he will talk about his passion - New Jersey, especially the rundown abandoned funky parts - and take phone calls from listeners on exploring the abandoned buildings of [...]

Artist: Steven Sater (Book & Lyrics), Duncan Sheik (Music) Album: Spring Awakening Release Date: December 12, 2006 Once upon a time I had planned to do a week full of Broadway soundtracks. Then I remembered that I have very low tolerance for Broadway musicals and that by Wednesday of that hypothetical week I'd want to cut my ears off. So instead expect a smattering of musicals in the remaining weeks of the project. It's hard to quantify what it is that bothers me about musical [...]

In the world of "they were going to see the video anyways", Pamela Anderson has trumped stupid celebrity parents everywhere. Apparently, Pammy told her children about her starring role in her sex tape with their dad, Tommy Lee. After "Borat" made its run, she was convinced that the sex tape reference would lead her young children to the famous video. When speaking with Jeremy Kyle , she described talking to her boys about the tape. [...]

I can't get over how many people pitch up to watch features screened by the Cheltenham Film Society . I trotted over to the Bacon Theatre on Tuesday to view, at the invitation of J, a Brazilian production, Linha de Passé and was stunned to witness throngs of gentlefolk flocking into the building. I genuinely believed there was something else on at the complex; I'm so used to watching films at Gloucester's Guildhall in an audience of twenty or so (on a good night) that I was thrown by such a multitude. About 250-300 cinema lovers attend [...]

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" opens up with an image of a moon on screen suggesting the werewolves will come out and Bella's (Kristen Stewart) life is still dark and incomplete. The film ends with Bella taking an exaggerated breath of air, insinuating she will take a leap of faith with Edward. Everything in between is delivered exactly how Team Edward and Team Jacob fans want the plot to go down. WARNING: If you are on Team Edward then your [...]

DANE COOK ISOLATED INCIDENT (Comedy Central DVD) www.danecook.com I have tried to stay clear of most things with Dane Cook. The guy visited my school multiple times back when I was in college; he appeared in the film "Employee of the Month," which I still haven't seen; and I've done this all because people have told me that he simply isn't very funny. I finally decided to see for myself with his new DVD, Isolated Incident , which was released yesterday. Maybe it's just been [...]

"Canary Wharf is like our Statue of Liberty," Roll Deep producer Target once said. "It pushes me on. It's like all the money is there and it's an inspiration to get your own." London Shanghai Sinogrime is a sub-genre that barely ever existed, a momentary glitch in the supposedly predictable sonic geography of London dance music. Around 2002-3, with garage crumbling and the cement still drying on grime as a genre, a few producers in E3 suddenly lurched [...]

Two video contests have been announced today. The first is from Lady Gaga , the end result of which sort of sounds like The Beastie Boys' Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That! : Win a chance to meet Lady Gaga, attend her rehearsal and "Monster Ball" concert in Boston all while capturing it on camera. MySpace Music announced today an exclusive contest with international pop superstar Lady Gaga to win the chance to film the first U.S concert of her tour on December 1st in Boston, MA; the video will be edited and [...]

I'm not too sure what to make of Sonny Vandevelde when I first meet him for this interview. His salt and pepper beard, bucket hat and affable demeanor makes me think he once worked in a surf shop. The term "salty sea dog" seems particularly apt and I'm not too sure why. Surprisingly that assumption is only half true because (though he loves surfing) Balenciaga, Comme Des Garcons and Alexander McQueen are the only shows to have eluded Vandevelde's lens thus far. Actually it's far easier on my wrists, sanity and time to list the shows he hasn't documented backstage. [...]

[Our last evening of music at the Echo gave me such a warm-and-fuzzy, I decided to invent a word for this next show: "Decembering":] Buzz Bands LA invites you to a night of sweeping guitar rock on Dec. 2 at the Echo, featuring Helen Stellar , KAV , Square on Square and Nightmare Air . Tickets are $8 at the door, $5 if you RSVP to buzzbands(at)gmail(dot)com. Here's a rundown on the lineup — more on all four of [...]
ARGENTINA: Zonaindie Entre Ríos - Frontera Finally we get the chance to showcase this great indie-pop band from Buenos Aires on MAP. Entre Ríos is a musical project led by Sebastian Carreras (vocals, keyboards, guitar) that has been around since 1998. Their first albums were recorded with Isol as the main singer, but since her departure in 2005 they've featured different guest vocalists live and in the studio. Frontera is a MAP-exclusive [...]
School of Seven Bells recently piled into a cab for a session of "Black Cab Sessions," performing "White Elephant Coat." This is the first Black Cab Session I can remember that actually looks like a short film. Go here to watch it.

Eternal question: how to leave the rock, how to rock the rock? We no want to go away, we a want to stay. Love home, rep home. But yard hard. No soul want a be forever down, stepped upon. We assert ourselves against authority. We our own authority. But everyday downpressor on our back in everyway. What we gon do? The upward struggle of our living down-under make our music come strong, got to be tuff enuff to stand forward in the shit-storm. Take a little woman like this here hummingbird Cherine who sing eagle strong. [...]

At this point in my blogging career, there's no need to describe situations as "surreal." They aren't, so using the word is hyperbole. Not to say that they aren't unique and that doing this hasn't afforded its share of opportunities that I know I wouldn't have encountered otherwise. If Jay could trip a referee @ MSG, I could have effortlessly reached out and tripped him up on Friday (thanks Laura @ 360). There are no secrets on what to expect @ [...]
