Unless you've been holed up in a cabin for the past year working on the next great American novel (we need it!), then you are probably already know that Built to Spill recently released an excellent new, long-player. Full of beautifully somber, unconventional lyrics and tastefully epic guitar solos, There Is No Enemy is another excellent contribution to Built to Spill's untouchable catalog of solid indie-rock. While Built to Spill's new record is great, nothing can beat seeing the band live. Lucky for you (and us), the boys will be playing two [...]

Finn Riggins ditched the big yellow bus, but it's not about to ditch its home state of Idaho. [SPAZZ POP] Finn Riggins loves life on the road. In fact, the Idaho spazz-pop trio is so committed to touring, it spent a staggering 245 days away from home last year. For many of the shows, it rolled up to bars and house venues on some interesting wheels: an old yellow school bus. "It would get so cold, 'cause there was virtually no heating," drummer Cameron Bouiss says of the band's first [...]
We're supposedly heading into a slower time of year for live music-- holidays, weather, and the slow new release calendar from here on out are all partially responsible. You'd never know it, though, looking at this week's calendar, featuring long established names like Mission of Burma, They Might Be Giants, Pinback, Black Heart Procession, Erin McKeown, and The Pixies (in Eugene, but not in Black Francis' garage). Heck, even B.B. King's dropping by this week. So with a group like that on the way, we're pretty happy to be able offer up tickets for grabs to a [...]

Math-rock Idahoans Finn Riggins make a mess on their fourth full-length, to mixed results. Finn Riggins is a very serious band. All three members hold music degrees. When not touring, they proclaim to reside in a cabin deep within the Idahoan woods for 120 days out of the year. They also assert, as written on their Myspace page, that their creative process "exemplifies the glory inherent in approaching one's creative life from an anomalous perspective." These three don't mess around. Such keen attentiveness to the artistic process of making...
Finn Riggins - "Wake" Thursday night, Idaho indie rockers Finn Riggins join The Dont's and Total Hound at the Hemlock Tavern (9pm, $6). The band's fourth album, Vs. Wilderness , came out last week, and they really blew us away at the El Rio Fourth of July show. If you like art-pop with a touch of prog, do check them out, as their relentless touring suggests that they're on their way to the big time. [...]

Portland, OR— There are musicians in Idaho!? Apparently so. Three-pieced Finn Riggins made the trek from Boise, ID on Saturday night to release their album, VS Wilderness . They had an intense energy with intricate keys, aggressive percussion, and sing-a-longish melodies. This was the highlight of the set: DNA confetti (what the hell was it?) being thrown at them on stage while the same mystery stuffs were running amuck in the music video being projected on stage simultaneously. The lesson we can all take from this imagery is that Finn Riggins will cut your DNA up into confetti and [...]
This week may provide the greatest variety of music releases all year. From Sufjan Stevens' debut classical work, The BQE to Jay Farrar and Benjamin Gibbard's collaborative effort One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Music From Kerouac's Big Sur to Things About Comin' My Way - A Tribute to The Mississippi Sheiks , the week's release list is filled with variety. The week is deep in quality releases, from what I have already heard I can strongly recommend The Atlas [...]
"Finn Riggins sure knows how to rep its hometown. The trio, which hails from podunk Hailey, Idaho (population 7, er, 7,844), says just as much in the instantly catchy "Wake (Keep This Town Alive)," the first single from new joint Vs. Wilderness. It's an uptempo, swirling affirmation of life, complete with "wah ah ah ooh [...]

There's something to be said for compact, layered rock and roll. Boise, Idaho's Finn Riggins, back with their second full length for Portland, Oregon's Tender Loving Empire label, has created just that ideal type of album. In an age where bands are pounding you over your head for attention at all moments, a [...]

Not quite the stellar lineup of releases this week, but there are still some great records to be had with The Flaming Lips' latest, Embryonic leading the pack. Also not to be completely overshadowed are releases from Thao Nguyen , Neon Indian , Imaad Wasif , Grant-Lee Phillips , and Fanfarlo who's debut finally get a proper US release after being available digitally for what feels like forever. As always, feel free to recommend anything I may have missed. [...]
After staying up yesterday and watching so much football I was seeing double. The Canes continue to develop into a fantastic team (it's all about that U baby!), Iowa held on against the other U of M, Florida State continues to deteriorate, and well Florida played hard enough to get by. In addition to that I crammed a few hours of The President's Cup into the mix. Golf is generally BORING to watch, but when you put the players in a vice grip and compete for points and pride, something happens...golf becomes exciting. Anyway, after all that I [...]
Idaho band Finn Riggins returns to their Portland home away from home for a release show at Berbati's tonight for their new Vs. Wilderness . In case you missed it, we recently featured the band here , and also recorded an in-studio session with them back in the spring of 2008. Jared Mees & the Grown Children, World's Greatest Ghosts and Typhoon are also part of the bill. Also on stages tonight, a release show for The Stolen Sweets ' new Chinatown-inspired effort and and an intriguing pair of Canadian acts [...]

I've been banging on about Young/Lost Ones for a few years now, but I am still waiting for the rest of the world to wake up and listen. The formerly SoCal-based (now in Bellingham, WA) band, led by Alex Jones, produces music at will, recording and releasing music once an idea as finished percolating. It has led to a string of official and internet only releases that is the new generation of Americana. Jones has the skill and voice to give Tom Petty a run for his money, but everyone just needs to wake up [...]
