This is an ever changing and (hopefully) expanding list of some of the songs I have mentioned before in this blog or simply stuff I have found somewhere on the web that I find interesting, but have no time to write about. All files have been found somewhere in cyberspace (and NONE of them have uploaded by me, so I cannot help you with any requests you might have - just keep returning and something new might pop up), so they will be available until the artists, record labels, fans, whatever decide to remove them. Thanks to a few readers, [...]
I'd waited several years for Annika Norlin and her bandmates to finally make their way to Germany and yet I really didn't know what to expect. Or rather, the show made me realize what I had been expecting by the surprises it gave me. I guess it was Annika's performance as a singer that stood out most -- she came across as a very strong and powerful storyteller, not as the tender or vulnerable songwriter some of her work portrays her to be. I'm not taking the cliché (and sexist) perspective here that "female songwriters have to be [...]

Slowly getting all these old interviews back online. Hopefully they're entertaining, despite being a bit dated. This is an email interview I did with Caesars back in July 2008. Keath: How would you describe Caesars for new listeners? Caesars: Melody driven, somewhat absentminded, head-in-the-clouds homegrown pop songs Keath: When recording, do you prefer quick takes or lots of overdubs? Caesars: Both actually. We always work fast when recording, but [...]

Make yourselves a favour, and before starting to read this article, go to JJ's MySpace and listen to his songs while reading the following interview. They're really good pop songs. Just as You! like them. And while listening, go through this article and read about his music, his future plans, when he plans on releasing his next album and so many more, including his hot party track list and his favourite bands. Zme: „If we just want to" is of course my first interest. I don't stand alone when I say that it is one of [...]

[photo courtesy of Brian at subinev blog ] I love these days when our favorite undiscovered gems finally receive the accolades they so richly deserve. This day is especially gratifying because one of our favorite people in the music world has officially made it - Sharon Van Etten 's debut CD Because I Was in Love has received a glowing review from Pitchfork . Some of the language in the review echoes our original raves about Sharon over the last year - "Van Etten's confident, nuanced soprano [...]

Timo Räisänen's cover album '...And Then There Was Timo' must be one of the oddest of its kind in recent memory. The selections are literally all over the place. Rarely can you find covers of AC/DC, Dolly Parton, Sonny & Cher, Josh Groban, Whitney, Mariah, and the obligatory Radiohead all in one tracklist. His approach is tongue-in-cheek, and a bit 'Let's throw all at the walls and see what sticks', but there are some gems here. His surprising cover of Sugababes' "About You Now" is certainly a highlight. I didn't know that song did well in Sweden, or did it? [...]

[photo courtesy of Kyra Kverno - more of her amazing work here ] On Thursday at Europa , Monks of Doom hit the ground running and never let up. In their first live performance in nearly four years, the band top-loaded the setlist with heavier rock numbers played flawlessly. With much humorous banter in between numbers, Monks of Doom then alternated original numbers and their eclectic covers, and finished the impressive set with an intense back-to-back "Insect God" and "Hurricane Fighter Plane". Thursday's solid show set the stage for [...]

[photo courtesy of tapermark ] Alela Diane's set opening for Blitzen Trapper on Friday night was a revelation. We were familiar with her fine songs only so far as are featured on her MySpace page . What became clear on Friday was that this young woman has an incredible range of vocal talents and has put together an excellent band to compliment her. What is more wonderful is that her father is the lead guitar and mandolin player whose melodic fret work drives the band. Alela mentioned [...]

[photo courtesy of Jenn Barnett Photos - more here ] Without much fanfare, Portland's Blitzen Trapper sold out consecutive nights in NYC on a weekend when there were a glut of shows for concertgoers to attend. On Friday at Bowery Ballroom , the band performed an energetic and tight ninety-minute set heavy on material from their universally acclaimed September 2008 release Furr . Blitzen Trapper exhibit a plethora of classic influences (Dylan, Neil Young, Wilco, etc), often contained in stop-on-a-dime precise changes within [...]

[photo courtesy of Impose Magazine - more here ] When we walked into " The 1896 " in industrial North Bushwick for the "Brooklyn vs. Baltimore" Marathon a few weeks ago, it was basically a huge empty warehouse. In the corner, ToddP's staff worked on constructing the stage, and in the other room the bands and other early entrants started the party. Within an hour, the empty room became a packed event with estimates of between 1500 to 2000 people. The eight separate groups delivered inspired sets and [...]

[photo by surfgoth - many more excellent ones here ] The closing band at last Friday's epic show at Market Hotel was the most established of all five bands - Brooklyn's "acid folk" veterans Woods . The live Woods is quite a bit more "acid" than the freak-folk sound of their studio releases . As the band eased into the set with a lilting jam reminiscent of A Saucerful of Secrets -era Pink Floyd, the remaining diehards (about half the crowd) were [...]

[photo by surfgoth - many more excellent ones here ] Before the show on Friday at Market Hotel , Blank Dogs was a mysterious figure who released copious amounts of vaguely post-punk but ultimately undefinable material. The songs are intensely layered with multiple effects, the most obvious being the heavily reverbed vocals. The most comprehensive information about Blank Dogs (the person) was the November 2008 interview with Swingset Magazine . In its previous two live performances , Blank Dogs was a [...]

[photo by surfgoth - many more excellent ones here ] Nodzzz come with good references. The band is signed to one of our favorite independent labels, What's Your Rupture . And this week, Nodzzz was the "band of the week" at the Pop Tarts blog . On Friday night at Market Hotel , the band was second on the bill and ripped through their set much like they do on the new self-titled l.p. - 9 songs in 18 minutes. [...]

[ photo credit ] Web hype is such a mixed blessing. In the intervening months since ToddP booked last night's show at the Market Hotel , Wavves has "hit it' big on the web, with features on all the major blogs, including Gorilla vs. Bear , Pitchfork and even Spin . Indeed, Pitchfork.tv was there to record Wavves last night. The result of the rapid hype was the disconcerting swelling of a capacity see-and-be-seen crowd for just that one twenty-minute set [...]

[ photo by Jeff Ambrose ] What Laura Says is an excellent quintet from Tempe Arizona who write and perform ambitious cross-genre pop songs. The band signed to the Terpsikhore Collective label after they caught the ear of The Annuals and released their debut self-titled album last August. On Wednesday last, What Laura Says opened the night at Bowery Ballroom with an outstanding forty-minute set that conjured up influences from Sunflower /Surf's Up-era Beach Boys to Zappa to 70's Prog to the [...]
We were prepared, based on our research and on the positive reviews for her new album With Blasphemy So Heartfelt , to enjoy Jessica Lea Mayfield 's set opening for the Annuals at the Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday last. What we were not prepared to hear was such an "old soul" authentic voice projected from the body of a nineteen-year old young woman. The juxtaposition of the small, young waifish singer and the Lucinda Williams -like voice of experience creates a compelling can't-look-away quality to Jessica Lea's [...]
[from Annuals MySpace - photo by Brian Vetter] Annuals are on tour in support of their new CD Such Fun . On Wednesday at Bowery Ballroom , Annuals played an energetic eighty-minute set that drew equally from their two full-lengths and four EPs. The highlights included the new single "Confessor", "Brother" and as the first encore "Carry Around". While the band maintains a youthful and exuberant energy on stage, Adam Baker 's lyrics exhibit a wisdom beyond his years. [...]
