J. Tillman took the stage at the Middle East Upstairs for a late show on Sunday night. But then again, it was only 8pm in Seattle, the west-coast town that this drummer from Fleet Foxes calls home. The performance was a family affair, with J. Tillman's brother Zach opening as a solo act called Pearly Gates Music . Zach Tillman offered us a stripped-down version of his already sparse style: leaving behind all unnecessary instruments, he came to us as one man and a guitar crooning blues and covering Pavement's "Shoot [...]
local natives - camera talk local natives - airplanes (bbc radio 1 live in session) [from last.fm "Local Natives are a Southern California act preparing to release their debut full length. Upon first listen though, it seems as if there's no way that can be the case. These songs roll by with the ease, confidence and chemistry of a much more seasoned act. My initial reaction is to compare them to bands known for their celebratory bombast like Broken Social Scene but with the rich orchestration of groups like Grizzly [...]

When you go from selling out venues in minutes with one band to barely at all on your own, you have to keep a sense of humor about it. "It's nice to play in a room that can actually house the riot that follows me everywhere," Josh Tillman sarcastically joked to the hundred or so people that made it out to the early show. It was hard to tell if the audience was there because they knew his music, the popularity of Fleet Foxes, or because Tillman is a bit of local having grown up in Rockville just [...]

DOWNLOAD: Local Natives - Sun Hands (MP3) Fool's Gold / Local Natives "Indeed, in many ways Local Natives ' Gorilla Manor is like a science experiment in how to create a critically acclaimed album: take some of the ethereal folksiness of Fleet Foxes ('Airplanes'), add some Arcade Fire-ish choral harmonies (' Shape Shifter', 'Stranger Things'), a dash of Broken Social Scene's quirkiness ('World News', 'Camera Talk') sprinkle with Cold War Kids-esque off-kilter timings and shouty middle eights ('Sun Hands', [...]
Pretty good interview with the Deerhunter / Atlas Sound frontman. Post-pneumonia bed-riding, Cox runs through Logos song by song for the first time, along with some other good anecdotes ("I am asexual"). The Twelves have released 3 fantastic mixtapes and so far I've posted two and it's been one of the most downloaded files on this site. The time has come to complete the series with the with yet another jewel, Episode II . Aside from Steph Lund's Le Miel du Mois (recently crowned mixtape goddess on The Clink ), I can't say I've heard many mixtapes that can keep my attention for more then a song but this series has absolutely no problem accomplishing that task. I quoted my friend Ben when I posted their last mixtape [...]
Welcome to day two of my favorite albums of the aughts. I should remind everyone that these are MY favorite albums of the past decade, which coincidentally means they might not be the same as yours. Compiling this list was an arduous task and honestly it could be different every single day depending on my mood. It just so happens that this is the final product of months of work and is what goes out on the internets for everyone to see. Anyways I hope you enjoy and maybe even stumble upon something you haven't heard in awhile. [...]
J.Tillman and I discuss his place in and outside of Fleet Foxes.
It's been a busy last few months for Ben Gibbard . First there was that Jay Farrar collaboration on the Jack Kerouac soundtrack . And, of course, there's the Death Cab for Cutie song on that soundtrack for the shiny vampire movie. Plus, the man got married! Yet despite all this, Mr. Zooey Deschanel has once again made time found time to join an already all-star line-up for a killer new album. And this time it's not just for our entertainment. According to Spinner.com , Gibbard [...]

The xx coming to Doug Fir on the 26th with Friendly Fires. Okay, so I missed September but I'm going to make it up to you with a double set of mixes this month. For now we'll just pretend it's still October....sunny, warm and dry. I was a little late on the Fever Ray bandwagon but better late than never and now I'm hooked. The Knife's Karin Dreijer Andersson's solo project is amazing. The xx remind me of a mix between Mazzy Star and Hot Chip. Mazzy Star for the mellowness [...]

Listen to "What's On The Hi-Fi Ep. 5" MP3 "Good Morning" - Bikini Machine France's Bikini Machine (whose name is taken from the B-movie Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine ) thrive on inspiration from the sounds of 50's / 60's subculture - coupling vintage guitars and melodies with modern rock and electro sounds. The imprint of Jon Spencer as producer and [...]
by Andrew Frisicano Tinariwen @ (Le) Poisson Rouge in April ( more by Tim Griffin ) Malian band Tinariwen recently won the 2009 Uncut Music Award for best album (given by Uncut Mag ) for their record Imidiwan:Companions . The 11 member jury, which included Billy Bragg and Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold, voted the album the "most inspiring and rewarding" of the past 12 months over the seven other entries including Animal Collective, Grizzly [...]

Filed under: News , New Music It looks like the ' New Moon ' soundtrack isn't the only compilation getting a little help from Death Cab for Cutie 's Ben Gibbard this fall. Gibbard has reportedly signed on to contribute a version of Neil Young 's 'Harvest Moon,' a song he covered played live from time to time, to the 'GIVE Seattle' charity album. The project features Seattle-based artists and benefits the Arts Corp and numerous food banks. [...]
Right from the start of Californian quintet Local Natives ' debut, it's clear that this is something special. Gently melodic guitar is joined by a ridiculously insistent drum-beat for all of 39 seconds, before Taylor Rice's dreamy vocals enter the fray: " Oh some evil spirit/ Oh some evil this way comes/ They told me how to to fear it/ Now they're placing it on their tongues ". Whether it's about the perils of pill-taking or a more metaphysical meandering on faith, we're not sure, and providing it sounds as good as this, we couldn't give a hoot. And [...]

Almost as if they received some sticker alerting them they'd made it into the club, the mere gleaning of forum posts pertaining to the band reveal almost constant comparisons to the likes of Fleet Foxes and Arcade Fire and the requisite mention of the title 'the next big thing' on every other communique.
Click here to view the embedded video. Well, the mainstream is picking up on this a bit late, but better late then never, right? Let's Go Sailing's brilliantly sweet The Chaos In Order has been a constant listen since it came out a couple years ago. One of the most memorable tracks is "Icicles" (though it's hard to pick a legit standout track because they're all so good), which Radio Shack realized (...two years late) and have now decided to feature it on their appropriate wintry commercial, "Product Tree Farm". [...]
Going to a concert whilst wearing a suit is an interesting experience, especially after previously being at a do at the Polish Embassy (yes, really). Ignoring the puzzled glances from my fellow gig-goers at the Shepherds Bush Empire, I settled into the capacity crowd, sadly not at the front. What, you think I'm going to get creases in these trousers? Mew, in case you didn't already know, are one of the most adventurous rock bands around these days. Their songs blend heartstoppingly brilliant bits with slightly more tedious bits. Their best songs blend heartstoppingly brilliant bits [...]
