The Big Pink first caught my attention with their single "Velvet," a dreamy collage of industrial beats amidst a droning guitar shred. I played it over and over and over until I got my hands on the debut album A Brief History of Love, which became an automatic favorite. While being more reminiscent of Jesus and the Mary Chain, the band took its name from country soul rockers The Band's debut album Music from Big Pink. The duo consists of multi-instrumentalists Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell. The band's debut album, A [...]
photo by Baskin' Trey Anastasio & Classic TAB kicked off their Winter tour last night in Charlottesville at the recently-renovated Jefferson Theatre. Our buddy Brent grabbed some solid photos , CitrusCarpetMan posted a decent video of the debut of "Liquid Time," and the boys over at Hidden Track and the Butter Room had us covered on setlist updates. Sounds and looks like a great time. Video: Trey Anastasio and Classic [...]

I'm attaching the press release below, so that you know what I know. But if this is at all a possibility, this is quite a bellwether warning for indie music retailers, as ear X-tacy is one the nation's most recognizable and lauded independent record retailers - a name that often finds itself in the same sentence as Electric Fetus and Amoeba Records... UPDATE: I will be attending this press conference and will be tweeting live on The Decibel Tolls Twitter John Timmons, founder of [...]
I'm too sick to my stomach right now to even speculate what will be said at a press conference on Friday held by ear x-tacy's owner John Timmons. The press release (below) only says that potential changes to ear x-tacy will be addressed. The tone of the release was not encouraging. Ear x-tacy is too important to loose, not only for the local music scene, but the Louisville community at whole. From now until Friday, lets make a pact. For every album you would go buy online (or "borrow" online) and for every [...]
Place: A barge on the Seine in Paris. Time: 1910. It is close to sundown in Paris, and the stevedores work unloading Michele's barge. Giorgetta, Michele's wife, asks her husband if she can bring wine to the workers. He agrees but does not join them because she refuses his kiss. The stevedores start dancing to the music of a nearby organ grinder and one of them steps on Giorgetta's foot. Luigi, a stevedore, dances with her, and it is evident that there is something between them. Upon hearing of Michele's return the stevedores' gathering [...]
The biggest bands in the world have a concept to promote their tour. U2 did Zoo TV and the 360 Tour , the Rolling Stones had A Bigger Bang ; so when Americana singer-songwriter Israel Nash Gripka and indie garage rockers The Fieros began planning their U.S. jaunt, they decided to be candid and "Sing For Their Supper." In March, the artists will set sail from New York City to the southern United States, stopping along the [...]
Tuesday, February 9, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: So, which of you will be tuning in for a brand spanking new episode of Lost tonight? I know I'll watch. However, I am hesitant that they'll follow-up their harrowing season premiere with one of their classic "we'll answer that question later" episodes. Maybe not though. Guess we'll see. It seems like forever since the last time Josh Ritter popped into my brain (I'll always love the song Wolves), so it was definitely [...]
In this weeks show the artist and manager start the week off on the wrong foot, The artist attends Social Media: Music to my ears in central London, The artist returns to a letter which shocks him and the artist has a dream which really puts the wind up him

It's not surprising that Matthew Barber's upcoming release - True Believer - is flying under the radar of most of the sites I read and most of the music loving public in general. Barber is easy to classify - essentially he's a rock solid song writer that could charm you with just an acoustic or a piano - but the surprising range he presents when he writes songs makes it almost to lock into a sound or style. His understated arrangements consistently display his talent, but really don't translate into press quotes and hyperbole. He can't be put [...]

Panton is a side project of a particular Montreal producer/remixer/dj and this is his mix for Southern Fried Records as a bit of a teaser to the up and coming release of the 4 track ep that includes a remix of 2 bears (solo project of Jos from Hot Chip). Southern Fried Records if you didn't know it is home to some of THE ballsiest producers around including Armand Van Helden, Black Noise, Crookers, Cagedbaby, The Black Ghosts, The Whip Shinichi Osawa and the aforementioned 2 bears. Tracklisting Mad Kidz - [...]
I made it down to First Friday at the El Dorado to catch White Lung , Nu Sensae , and Black Wizard . It was my first time at the El Dorado since they started putting shows on. The stage is only about a foot off the ground (a la Pat's before they raised their's), but the sound was decent, and the beer special was cheap. It was my first time checking out Black Wizard, who were already half way through some sweet stoner-metal jams when I showed up. By the [...]

Following on from our previous post, we're (tenuously) keeping the Sab Francisco link going - for that is the title of this brilliant track by Ariana Delawari . A track so good that it somehow woke us from our slumbers on the train after another day of same old, same old... A track from an album called Lion of Panjshir . An album released on David Lynch's own label. We could tell you how this [...]

The music world was dealt a cruel blow on August 28, 2009 when troubled celebrity mixologist DJ AM was found dead in his New York City apartment. (His death was later attributed to an accidental suicide.) Goldstein's estate is now in the process of settling the DJ's affairs and has put the mixer's luxury apartment on Lafayette Street up for sale. According to Curb , Goldstein's 1,147-square-foot apartment has been listed at $1.795 million ($200,000 less than he originally paid for it). The site reports the condo's [...]

Howdy kids. Sorry for our absence as of late, We've been busy boys. The Play-Doh Launch night @ CATCH was huge and BEFORENOON 's 1st Birthday @333 was, as we have come to expect from the B4N team, classic. Anyways... I digress... I heard a cover version on a youtube link while I was looking for a Ramones video. It was by Jason Mraz. It brought out a very spitefull reaction in me as to the 'softened'version he did. Let's just say my reaction was opposite to the one Mraz intended by slowly and 'meaningfully' [...]
