This is where I talk about one of my favorite things, television. Some critics are saying that 30 Rock has lost it's touch this season. Those critics are crazzzy. If anything, think that it just took a little longer this year for the show to hit it's stride. You may remember last season was a bit doubtful (read: too cameo-heavy) till 5 or 6 episodes in and then it never let up. Furthermore, I think a person with any sense would realize that with last night's episode "Sun Tea", 30 Rock is [...]

By DL and Frank Phosphate FRIDAY Mary Anne Hobbs / Blixaboy / Pandai'a / Royal Highnuss /VJ S (eye) Plus Unified Minds /Gallery Cat/ MC Astro / Bodega Brothas (Outside) (Green Elephant): Pretty big catch for Dallas to have such a prominent figure of both Dubstep as well as the BBC here all the way from London. Hobbs played music by Wanz Dover's Blixaboy project on her influential show, which is what eventually led to this event, and it's good to see [...]
I only met Mark Mulcahy once. It was on the night that Mark and Ken played the North Star with The Mountain Goats who were on tour with Bowerbirds. This is the first night that I was lucky enough to have met my friend Ken Maiuri (an amazing musician and person, bar none , as they say). This was also the night that I received the most amazing hug in the World from John Darnielle, who come to think of it: should go down in history as a man with a Gift of Hug. It was a magical night. [...]

In the spring of 2005 Bob Dylan hired some new guys for his band. Nothing unusual there; Dylan tends to switch around his band every year or so. Except then, for the next four and a half years he didn't change a thing. Since that spring fans grew a little more tired of those same five people with each passing leg of the so-called Never-Endi ng Tour. Were these guys the second coming of The Band or something, fans might have been more forgiving, but soon this lowercase-"b" band turned every [...]

For months now, Brendan Boogie has run a phenomenally successful show series at the Lizard Lounge called The Cover-Up with Brendan Boogie . Each show takes one artist or theme and all the performing bands play cover sets accordingly. So far they've done Queen, The Black Crowes, Elvis Costello, and Kidz Rock (in which yours truly performed). Now we know that Boogs gets an awful lot of airtime on this blog, especially for such a scumbag*, but this Saturday night, his latest installment of The Cover-Up re-enacts The Band's The Last Waltz . Performing are: [...]
Although there were many exceptions, the majority of the groups that specialized in the type of close-harmony singing known as doo-wop fell into two categories. The earliest was the R&B-inspired music that mostly came out of the black urban environment, but close on its heels was the sound of the Italian-American groups, mostly originating in the big Eastern cities. Randy and the Rainbows was just such a group, and their hit "Denise" is still one of the most familiar songs from the era. Randy and the Rainbows was a quintet that originated in the Queens section of New [...]

Warren Haynes has never hid his appreciation of the music of Deep Purple, so he must've been as happy as a kid in a candy store last night when he sat-in with the English rockers at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. According to a report from our friends at Here Comes The Flood, Haynes added his unique brand of sizzling guitar to the Black Night encore . Haynes had formed a friendship with Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover after Glover sat-in with Gov't Mule on the Deep End [...]

The problem with a list like this is the "shoulds". You know, the albums you feel like everyone else will pick, so you "should," too? Well, this time I decided not to deal with those. My list is based on the number of times I listened to these albums since they came out, whether I love them so much I already know every word to every song, how much it moved me, etc. This is a personal list. It isn't intended to be complete or controversial. That said, I know I'll get crap for [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Hos, Hookers, Call Girls & Rent Boys collects stories, poems, and essays by sex workers. Compiled by David Henry Sterry and RJ Martin, Jr., the book organizes this collection of refreshingly genuine and brutally honest writings by category (love, life, money, etc.). The New York Times wrote of the book: "From the unappealing title, you might think this is a truly trashy [...]

[ Watch until 1.14am on Thursday 19th November 2009 ] (UK users only) The George Clooney and Grant Heslov combo 'The Men Who Stare At Goats' is in cinemas now and by most accounts is not that great. Therefore, I'd suggest another Clooney-Heslov collab, 'Good Night, and Good Luck' , is a much worthier use of your time. Not to mention that it's free, courtesy of our good friends at the Beeb. The 2005 film, set in the 1950s, covers the journalistic endeavour of news reporter Ed Murrow in taking on US Senator Joseph McCarthy [...]
[Fresh from Joe Franks's Facebook page, reprinted by permission…] Across the alley is an apartment building. You look into one of the windows and see an old black couple arguing in a loving, formulated fashion that they've worked for years to perfection. He gestures violently, his left hand holding a half‑eaten turkey leg. She, continually wiping her [...]

Frank Yang In leading up to Friday night's show at Lee's Palace, I'd wondered aloud as to why it had taken The Wooden Sky so long to play a proper hometown show, what with their latest record, the ex If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone having come out all the way back in August. Walking into Lee's, I got my answer - they were building their sets. The stage was breathtakingly decorated with all manner of props and sculptures built of paperback [...]

Welcome to the new, not-really-improved BabyStew This Week In Chicago listing. What's new about it, you ask? Absolutely nothing, except that it now covers the week from Monday through Sunday rather than Sunday through Saturday. It always seemed weird to me not to be listing Sunday shows until the morning of – when not many people are reading blogs – for the sole purpose of sticking with the conventional definition of "week" ( i.e. , Sun-Sat). But convention be damned. So here's what's going on in Chicago this "week". [...]

Sparklehorse's collaboration with Fennesz makes for a particularly dreamy and ambient installment of the In the Fishtank series. Sparklehorse's usually reclusive core member, Mark Linkous, has been relatively busy in 2009. He played a lead role in the year's magnum collaborative opus Dark Night of the Soul, an album of genius which found him working with producer Danger Mouse to provide the sonic groundwork for a revolving door of guests including Julian Casablancas, Frank Black, Iggy Pop, Wayne Coyne and Jason Lytle, only to see its official release shelved indefinitely by logistical label...
