Last night, Sunday November 1, 2009, we attended the 7th annual Urban Music Awards (UMA) at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London. Dave and I made our way to London via the Oxford Tube bus which is convenient and not too pricey. We were somewhat entertained by strangers Charlie and his mates, sitting behind us. It was difficult not to overhear their excitement and conversation regarding their plans for the evening, which was going to the Snowboarding World Cup event at Battersea Power Station. While they were discussing their [...]

Maynard Ferguson rounded his notes and wrapped them in soul for "The Blues Roar," originally released in 1964. Ray Charles was an obvious inspiration the album includes four of his songs, all of which have a soulful swagger. "What'd I Say" is particularly saucy. Ferguson and his orchestra's rendition might even more playful than Charles'; the track sounds a bit like a bluesy version of the good-natured blowing contests between Count Basie's and Duke Ellington's orchestras on "First Time! The Count Meets the Duke." Ferguson's squalls are blown right back at him by the rest of the [...]

The international playboy that is Pharrell is no stranger to getting the girl, but this girl, he's sharing with his homies. Following in the footsteps of the Black Eyed Peas , Lil Skateboard P has revealed to MTV that he and his bandmates in genre-hopping combo N.E.R.D. have added a female vocalist by the name of Rhea. The collective will now feature Rhea alongside Pharrell, Chad, and Shay in all of their new recordings, adding a different flavor than what some fans may be used to hearing from the former all-boys club. "Now [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

The live music highlight of last week was seeing Ross Flournoy at the Little Room at Largo. That's a great little spot to see music. With the future of the Broken West in doubt, it was great to see him perform a couple of new songs along with some Broken West classics. Monday 9/28/09 [Pick of the Night] Leslie and the Badgers / Sian Alice Group / Best Coast / Paperplanes @ The Echo (Free) – Night three of their Monday night residency. [Recommended] [...]

The Blueprint 3 is finally in stores and Jay-Z has a big benefit show planned for Madison Square Garden this Friday (Sept. 11). The hip-hop star has also set up a North American tour to support the record, which begins with a show in Philadelphia on Oct. 9 and ends in Texas on Nov. 22. Jay-Z is also set to support Coldplay on a few dates in their native U.K., which affirms his sudden liking for pasty boys with guitars. Sadly, Oasis split just at the wrong time. Perhaps [...]

Digital Haircut [mp3] Punk-pop-metal, laden with hues of Metallica and even Jane's Addiction, this song is a hard, alternately cacophonic and harmonic, adrenalin spiking, heart-stopping, jagged jumping, spraying, thumping aural assault. We like it. We're stoked to have the Toronto bunch, DD/MM/YYYY , in the studio to slay and play in early October when they visit LA. Tomas Del Balso, Jordan Holmes, Matt King, Mike Claxton and Moshe Rozenberg are all about open exploration in making music, citing inspiration from Frank Zappa to video [...]

Rodney Crowell , Dave Alvin , Radney Foster , James McMurty , all names synonymous with great songwriting, with his new album, Welcome To The Nowhere Motel , Greg Koons firmly cements himself a position on that list as well. The album blends a mix of folk, country and melodic pop with lyrics filled with detail and emotion. Songs of love and relationships play like tales from a road long travelled. The pop rush of Elizabeth captures the feeling [...]
Someplace outside of Portland in a forest, there'll be a bunch of hippies gathering to camp and love music. Doesn't this all sound so nice? Wow, there were many many additions that I made to the list. if you get a chance take a look and start writing shows on your calendar cause there are just too many to remember. On Thursday if you haven't been to the Armory in Somerville yet, here's your chance to check it out and hear some good soul shouting from Barrance Whitfield and the Savages and the cocktail/movie theme sounds of Four Piece Suit, great bill. On Friday there are some really good choices. I saw Camera Obscura last time they were [...]

PORTUGAL. THE MAN We started out the day with Zach 's suggestion to hit up Portugal. The Man at the Sonic Stage for one of the 30 min acoustic sets. I have a feeling that sentiment will come across many audience members from Bonnaroo's lips. Here's the deal with Portugal. The Man if more people who grew up listening to Rusted Root can make music like this, we're in for a couple good music years. KATZENJAMMER [...]
