Besides the great (but unheralded) Volebeats, Detroit hasn't exactly become known as a haven for Americana music. Frontier Ruckus hopes to change that.Formed in 2003 by Matthew Milia and David W... Continue reading "Gig Alert: Frontier Ruckus at Dan's Silverleaf Tonight" >

A rather quick CMJ recap for today - Thursday I hit up Spike Hill in Williamsburg to see some of my fave Michigan peeps. Chris Bathgate was up first, with a good-sized band behind him (including Matt Jones on drums). As usual, the audience was filled with ever-loyal and always-psyched former Michiganders (Michiganites? Michiganians?) showing up to support artists from their native land. Chris

![The Wilderness of Manitoba – Hymns of Love and Spirits [Album Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2082261_lg.jpg)
First up was The Rural Alberta Advantage and now we're on to The Wilderness of Manitoba . Next up is the Wacky Saskatchewan Disaster in our study of each Canadian province. Anyway, The Wilderness of Manitoba have delivered an EP of stripped down folk that relies on gorgeous three and four piece harmonies to grab your attention. Most of the tunes don't move faster than a snail's pace, allowing a slightly plucked banjo to lead the way. What it lacks in speed, it makes up for in substance. One of the standout tunes is "Crow's [...]
The CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival invades New York City this week. Here's the latest from PopMatters' writers on the beat. Paleo Partisan Records Showcase Bowery Ballroom, New York City The subtle, wiry tunes of David Strackany (aka Paleo) launched the Partisan Records showcase at the Bowery Ballroom last night. Reminiscent of the late Eliott Smith, Paleo's warbly, delicate vocals stood out against his charmingly modest demeanor, also reminiscent of M. Ward or a less jarring Conor Oberst. Privileged onlookers parked themselves on the floor and were treated to an array of poetic acoustic sounds with...

Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, Orenda Fink, Old Canes, UUVVWWZ, Beep Beep and guest Suzannah Johannes are all on the bill there tonight. Check out a list of other shows [...]

Who? Frontier Ruckus What? snowed country town melancholy, the farmers are locked in their barns, and they just have their banjos. Sounds like? Timesbold, Whip, Will Oldham, Bonnie Prince Billy Winter is to be seen at the horizon. If you don't watch out, it'll catch you. I heard from a friend that it was snowing in the United States. This seems like the beginning of an eternal winter. Luckily there is Frontier Ruckus. It keeps you warm, evne if it's sad. It's [...]
Never mind the buzzkill. In spite of political scandals, widespread unemployment, and a downward spiral of economic and architectural decay, southern Michigan's music scene has never been more vibrant. Leave it to Flint native Michael Moore to document the downturn; Ann Arbor label Quite Scientific Records is celebrating the upside: the seemingly limitless creative potential of an area of the U.S. with a glorious musical history and, perhaps, an even brighter musical future. In this EXCLUSIVE interview, QuiSci co-founder Brian Peters gives us the skinny on what makes the greater Detroit area such fertile [...]
Yeah, yeah. I know. Start the blog up again and then only a few months later can't even manage to eke out a post every couple weeks--and, really, this won't count either. It isn't that there has been no music in my life lately, but rather that life has been just too busy to find the inspiration to blog (no commentary on whether or not posts here in The Room are inspired or not please). Here are my excuses: I haven't picked up any new music in weeks and I haven't been [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

Today marks the third and final EP from Cotton Jones and Quite Scientific Records . It's titled the Rio Ranger EP , and as with the previous two, it's packaged in a limited edition hardcover book, resplendent with original illustrations by the band. The music is everything you'd expect from former Page France'ers Michael Nau and Whitney McGraw : hazy and lazy, insubstantial and drifting, psychedelic folk melodies that make you feel like you're in an alternative universe with lollipop trees and marshmallow rivers. It's a wonderful place to vacation to and leave [...]
Late summer. The air hangs close with humidity, the cicadas riot in the trees and the world seems overgrown from some sort of mad crush of production before fall arrives. A perfect time to talk about Frontier Ruckus. With songs that are thick with harmony, a full, backwoods acoustic folk sound and crammed full of lyrical poetry, this indie folk band from Michigan provides a bounty of sound and imagery that seems to revel in the physical and natural world while simultaneously worrying about the inevitable changes of season, spirit and time. The album [...]
