When we meditated on Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally's gorgeous sophomore album Devotion we had the following to say: [Y]ou can't fall back on Mazzy Star or Galaxie 500 references because they've pushed themselves into their own, unique solar system. Victoria's voice and woozy after-hours organ tones are more assured, Alex has lost the beard but gained more inventive, atmospheric guitar lines. For just one instance, listen to "You Came To Me," the way each part of it builds. We don't think they could've wrote that song a year ago. Throughout Devotion, they've pushed [...]

i was one of the lucky 50,000 or so who got to see nirvana's second performance at the reading festival in 1992. it was my first visit, just for the day, and i'll never forget bouncing up and down with everyone else to "in bloom" trying to save my reading fest poster from getting crushed while clutching a plastic bag containing this great indie compilation cd. put together by melody maker, it's a pretty good survey of the early 90s indie scene with a good smattering of bands demonstrating the scene's inherent quirkiness. so i'm glad it didn't [...]

Dean & Britta are not Galaxie 500, just like Luna were not Galaxie 500 and sometimes that makes it hard for me to be rational. Nothing is better than Galaxie 500 were and if I try and measure anyone up against that yardstick they're all going to come up a bit short. I just need to stop measuring. The Dean & Britta show last night was a gem. There were flaws but those were caused by the venue and me not by Dean & Britta (and support Cheval Sombre) who put on a great show. Firstly [...]

St Giles in the Fields, London* Just a quick reminder that Dean & Britta are playing in London for the first time in over two years tomorrow (Wednesday) night. The show takes place at the very lovely St Giles in the Fields church just off Tottenham Court Road. Tickets are £12 and are still available from wegottickets . The promise is that Dean will be raiding the back catalogues of both Galaxie 500 and Luna for this show as well as that of Dean & Britta of course! Support [...]
[ download ] Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally are the sort of people who seem fated to have been musicians, or at least artists of some stripe. If you've listened to their first two albums as Beach House , it's nigh impossible to imagine the native Baltimorians putting down their instruments and eking out a living as CPAs or dental hygienists. Thankfully for us, that isn't the case, and after completing a rigorous tour schedule last winter the duo began working on the songs that would form their third LP, Teen Dream. [...]

A couple months ago we introduced you to Piper and Skylar, aka L.A. dream-pop duo Pearl Harbor, via " Luv Goon ," a song from their Mexican Summer 12". The track calmly transformed a bedroom into a wave pool with its slippery guitar and warm vocals. Or, as I said then, "Think about Washed Out's hazier ambiance combined with Real Estate's margarita-sipping Galaxie 500-isms." It's tacky quoting yourself, okay, but I think the description fits "California Shakedown," a song from their Wish We Were Here CD-R. (Though on this one you'll have to make sure the margarita's frozen, [...]

Photo by boltron- The 15th A Head Full of Wishes survey has just kicked off. Head over to cast your vote for favourite albums and tracks by Galaxie 500, Luna, Damon & Naomi and Dean & Britta. I have no incentives to get people to vote this year so you'll all have to do it for the love of the numbers. If you feel the need for inspiration you can check out the previous surveys . It would be nice to beat last years 97 responses.

Covers don't get much better than this. I'm not sure why Galaxie 500 was so good at covers but they did it right almost every time. Don't you just want to loop the beginning of 'Submission' so that it plays again and again? Anyways, it's not new or anything but I always like to play it before I go on vacation. Which brings me to.. the fact that I'll be away for a bit. I know I was just absent forever while I worked on that book but what can I say, now I'm tired and I need [...]
One of the smarter moves the music industry's made where vinyl is concerned is to realize that those who appreciate the medium also appreciate convenience, which is why we've applauded labels such as Dischord or Merge who've made available a full Mp3 download of a LP with purchase. So, you've got to hand it to FACTORY 25 who taken the medium one step beyond with another unique pairing: DVD and vinyl combos. Quoting their website now, "High and low concept films and music docs have a home at FACTORY 25, the new [...]

Over a year ago, googling for the band Songs was a rather difficult task. Show after show I would see them filling support slots and it always left me optimistic for the Sydney-based quartet. I never realised it would take this long to deliver their first full-length release. Photo: Rachael Cassells Good things come to those who wait, right? Their self-titled release sees a culmination of the music they've been staging over the past year. They introduce those familiar sounds, now refined and tangible. [...]

Maps: Turning The Mind The influence of bands like Spiritualized, Galaxie 500, My Bloody Valentine and Ride shone through We Can Create by Maps, aka James Chapman. He wrapped a shoegaze-inspired dreampop cloak around a skeleton of soaring melodies to produce a memorable debut album. His second album, though, is a darker sort of synthpop and is tougher listening. It's not that there are fewer tunes: his songs tip the hat to the electropop [...]

MySpace Opening up with the sound of bird noises might be a bit of an over-sell, but forgiveness comes easily when the multi-layered harmonies of Toronto's The Wilderness Of Manitoba arrive and usher in their debut EP, Hymns Of Love And Spirits . Sharing members with Provincial Parks and Key Witness , The Wilderness of Manitoba come with a very clear and direct mandate - to craft gentle, intricate folk songs of the sort that no one seems to make anymore. Of course, that's a mandate [...]

Galaxie 500 are the subject of the Over/Under in Magnet Magazine picking out five 'over-rated' and five 'under-rated' tracks. Nonsense of course! Anyone who even suggests that Snowstorm could be over-rated...

Writing Over/Under columns about a short-lived band with a long influential reach (see our Velvet Underground and Big Star entries) is a losing proposition, guaranteed to irk the faithful and draw charges of journalistic snobbery. And the story behind Galaxie 500's quick rise and fall is fraught with high [...]
