Utah has good music and good people, and I have a story to tell. Last Friday night, a band Desert Noises showed up to a local coffee shop. Despite the rainstorm, I loaded in a PA for the show, and from a mini trailer attached to the back of their station wagon, the band loaded in their gear. We talked a little about skateboarding and shared stories of touring. I found out they had been sleeping in their car most of this tour (w/ Drew Danburry), so I offered them some beds at my house. In the end, the [...]

Presented exactly as it was received: "In 1984, A pressed an ear to the front of a fat stereo speaker as Dad dropped a fresh wax copy of Born in the U.S.A. on the turntable. In 2003, A and Chopko drank beers in a vast San Francisco parking lot next to what was then Pacific Bell Park until they, with the E Street's opening strains tumbling faintly through the air, could no longer stand missing out. A scalper rolled by with nose-bleed bargains and the dudes obliged the Boss. In October 2008, [...]

Cut Off Your Hands hail from New Zealand, and are just now releasing their debut LP, entitled You and I , in the States last week on Frenchkiss Records. The trio play infectious power-pop-punk in the vein of The Fratellis, Franz Ferdinand, or The Wombats and are set to complete their introduction to the U.S. with some tour dates here starting in February. The group's frontman, Nick Johnston, had the following to say about the record: "Our pop sensibility has come lately. (While writing the record) I was listening to a lot [...]
First, before I delve in further, just a disclaimer: I am not claiming these songs were posted NEW over the summer...some of them I just found for the first time over the summer, and for all I know they have been up online since one Christmas past. So it may show my cunning to find cool stuff online, or show that I am slow to the draw and some other bloggers beat me to the punch. First off, some tracks I am fairly certain were new this past summer, and these were posted online on [...]

While I don't know if we'd go as far to call this week's edition of the Friday Mixtape epic - after all, there is always room for improvement - it sure is quite large. 41, count 'em, 41 songs can be found below, a mix of music's best new singles and remixes along with some selections with bands you might want to check out. And since it's CMJ week, we figured no better time than now to throw in a few extra ones featuring some of the marathon's performers. The CMJ CROWD: [...]

One night a few years ago, I was record shopping at this store called Rocks In Your Head, which used to be on Prince Street in SoHo. My friend Jessica brought me there for the first time after I met her at her place of work (an upscale spa with an A-list clientele) around the corner. There was a cute girl that used to work behind the counter, and she introduced me to bands like Orange Juice, Psychic Ills, and The Contortions. Although technically I don't think my asking, "What is this we're listening to?" counts as having her introduce [...]
