The Atlanta, Ga.-based Ginger Envelope returns with its second full-length, Invitation Air (One Percent). Recorded to a 16-track analog tape, this album ups the twang factor, showcasing Matt Stoessel's pedal steel and Patrick Carey's smoke-filled, lazy, almost-rasp. Despite frontman Carey's aversion to the alt-country classification, the Ginger Envelope seems to have only further countrified its [...]

Hey guys, girls, etc. As you may have noticed, I've not posted in ages. There's a good reason for that. I've been out of town house sitting for the last couple of weeks and the house didn't have Internet. So needless to say, without Internet you can't exactly do posts. Ha. Anyway, I'm back and have ALOT of catching up to do. My mail box is currently packed to gills w/300 items to respond to. What's that mean? It more than likely means a bumper crop of tracks for you to download over the coming week or so. [...]
Over three long winter nights, The Ginger Envelope holed-up in a cozy basement in Athens and recorded what would be the bulk of their second album, titled Invitation Air . Recorded to sixteen-track analog tape in a rather quaint and intimate setting, Invitation Air is a warm and expansive collection of strong sentiments, dusty imagery and subtle intricacies. With guest appearances from friends Page Campbell ( Hope for a Golden Summer ), world acclaimed fiddle player David Blackmon , and others that lend their talents and camaraderie, [...]
Tonight in DC there's a ton of great shows! A TON! DC9 has Japandroids, Slim Twig, and Tennis System while the Black Cat has Meow vs Meow, The Bloodsugars, and Power Pirate. Also the Rock and Roll Hotel has Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears and Torches. If you head a little west of town to Vienna you can catch the uber-indie act Wilco and Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band perform at Wolf Trap. Finally don't forget that up north in Philly the North Star Bar has Ape School, Madeline [...]

In Invitation Air , The Ginger Envelope 's follow-up to Edible Orchids , the band displays an impressive progression in songwriting and instrumental capabilities. Cohesive is its nature; this album goes very well alongside their earlier work. But from the opening track, "Turn Into Tempests", it's readily apparent that a change has occurred, one that finds The Ginger Envelope giant leaps ahead in their ability to wow the listener. Invitation Air has an impeccable flow. Each song has a sort of symmetry that crecendos and [...]

Oh man, I am on fire with the puns lately, right? Today, we're introducing an Athens, GA band, The Ginger Envelope [ MySpace ], and the latest single from the upcoming album, Invitation Air . The record is dropping on 6/27, so we wanted to share a tune, "All Pinned Down," with you. For the record, I don't think there is a redhead in the bunch, a fact that makes me really, really sad. Check out the new Ginger Envelope tune "after the jump" [...]
Reflections Of Misery I've been finding it hard to listen to folk music lately; I've been discovering a lot of artists who push themselves forward vocally, somewhat undermining the importance of good instrumentation. I know that folk music is based very strongly around lyrics, but there needs to be a balance. The Ginger Envelope captures the roots of folk music nicely, achieving a soulful blend of vocal harmonies and smooth instrumentation. There's a southern twang in singer Patrick Carey's voice, pedal steel gently sliding from the hands [...]

One can draw several conclusions from the cover of Edible Orchids . First, it gives the distinct impression of The Ginger Envelope being a post-Elephant 6 band. The green tint, personally, takes me back to Everything Is Green , an early release by The Essex Green on Elephant 6 and the newly resurgent Kindercore. The name of the band and album is the second hint—the names roll off the tongue like those off the lovable indie pop label. So, one shouldn't be too surprised that The Ginger Envelope hail from Athens, an [...]

New music from Athens singer-songwriter Madeline Adams is always reason to celebrate at C&T, so the release of her forthcoming White Flag (due March 10 from Orange Twin ) has me quite excited. Fortunately, listening through the record only affirms that enthusiasm. White Flag is Madeline's third full-length album, and again showcases her gorgeous voice and songwriting. As solid as The Slow Bang was, the maturity here indicates substantial growth since that 2006 release. On White Flag, Madeline embraces both the playful and sentimental sides of her [...]
