Sometimes I come up with the germ of an idea for discussion here in the Halls of Rock without knowing exactly where I expect things to go. This is one of those times. I think a lot about the notion of hippies and wish there was some kind of true neo-hippie vibe that I could be swept up in. I'm going to share a few thoughts on the matter and see if any of you have your own thoughts on the subject. A few of you may have heard me say this story before, but when I [...]

I'm not yet ready to anoint the 2009-10 edition of Syracuse Orange basketball the best team since their 2003 championship; heck, it's probably a little premature to call them better than last year's Sweet 16 version, led by lottery pick Jonny Flynn. But there's no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best defensive teams I've ever seen at the Cuse. And they are off to one hell of a start. One night after dominating #12 Cal, they dismantled defending national champion UNC by an 87-71 margin, sparked by a 20-1 start of the second half that [...]

Back in 1997 Anthony Lovett and Matt Maranian wrote and published what eventually became my favorite Los Angeles guidebook. That book's name was (and is) LA Bizarro . A few years ago on this website I talked to Matt about the original book's undertaking ( fun interview with Matt here ). Since that time the two authors have now revised, updated and significantly expanded that original tome, and their collective output was published by Chronicle Books just this fall. In the 2009 updated edition of LA Bizarro (available at the time of this [...]

By Carrie Brownstein And it's naptime. ( courtesy of The Patton Veterinary Hospital ) It's hard to believe that we've reached the end. For the past two weeks, all of us -- the NPR Music Team, a handful of outside contributors and myself -- have explored the last 10 years in music. Did we cover [...]
![Manu-L and Paul Cart – Keep on (incl. Nima Gorji Remix) [OFF011]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2141025_lg.jpg)
Keep On is a rough oldschoolish peaktime rocker, with massive bassline and catchy vocal, drop this in your set and be sure to get the dancefloor go wild... Babajee is a more emotional soulful percussive track, with extremely catchy vocals, perfect for the later hours of the night, a beautiful memory of the gone summer. Maybe the most particular track of the pack is Multicolours, a quirky groovetool with fresh and original sounds. Nima Gorji delivers a deep techy interpretation of Multicolours, completing the package in the perfect way. Support by: Loco Dice, Nick Curly, Sis, Audiofly, Shinedoe, [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Ben Shaberman's essay collection The Vegan Monologues is more than a book about not eating animals. Sherman touches on political, social, and environmental issues while recounting his own experiences, always in his humorous yet poignant voice. In his own words, here is Ben Shaberman's Book Notes music playlist for his essay collection, The Vegan Monologues : [...]

Score! Pop Up Swap is basically a massive free store. The concept is simple: 1) Everyone brings their old music, clothes, books, housewares, misc. radness 2) The items are sorted by a team of ninja volunteers and set on display like a department store 3) Once they've donated their items, attendees are invited to browse departments and take as much as they can carry. Everything is free! 4) The remaining items are collected and donated to charity. Over 1,300 people came to our first Score! Pop Up Swap (pics HERE ) in May, [...]
Team Clermont was in attendance for last weeks Athens Jookabox show, and what an amazing evening it was! One of our favorite tracks from the Asthmatic Kitty stars is "Don't Go Phantom"! They recently released a video for this track, the fifth video from their latest release Dead Zone Boys . This animated adventure features colored ghosts, random thievery, and mad scientistry! Check it our below!

I think next year (apart from heading halfway around the world for a wedding in Australia), number one on my "I want to go to there" list will be Stockholm. Sweden just seems to be producing some phenomenal music of late, and there must be a massive amount of amazing music going on over there that I'm never going to hear unless I'm actually there. I want to go to there, find it, enjoy it, and have the time of my life. I'm sure some of Team WANARB will accompany me, then we can bring you WANARB does Stockholm [...]

It's never easy to map out an entire decade in music. So, in constructing the "Decade in Music" interactive timeline , we sought to shape it with some of the bigger tent-pole trends, news (Elton John performing with Eminem) and groundbreaking changes in the industry, business and technology (Napster, the iPod). We also wanted to highlight albums (Britney Spears, Danger Mouse, Radiohead) that took a snapshot of the era, as well as deaths (Ray Charles, Johnny Cash) that affected everyone. And, of course, we wanted to include the occasional "wardrobe malfunction" controversy or bizarre curiosity ("Trapped in the Closet") [...]
No way! I thought she's be around forever! (Unrealistic, I know, but that's just how it felt.) It's just the 2009 pattern of stuff that you'd thought would go on into perpetuum ending. This is quite a long headsup, though. I hope the next year and heavy change leading up to it isn't an extended and remixed dirge. I remember when the headmistress of my high school retired after an eon there, and there was a long, celebratory funeral march to the retirement Mass. It seemed like the whole year was dedicated to the one, simple act [...]

Colorado's Monolith Festival is in trouble. Organizers of the three-year-old event, plagued the past two years by fractious Rocky Mountain weather, told fans in an e-mail "the future of the festival is very grim," and that they have "been unable to secure any options" that dig the fest out of its financial hole. Included was a plea for potential buyers/investors. [Full text of the letter after the jump.] Meanwhile, Bonnaroo announced its ninth annual event will be held June 10-13, 2010, near Manchester, Tenn. Tickets go on sale at noon Nov. 27. Meanwhile, only 148 days [...]

I got this sad email in my inbox yesterday about the Monolith Festival not being able to return next year, or at least it is on it's last leg. Unfortunately I only got to go to this great festival once, this year, and wondered to myself why I hadn't gone every year. It is it's own unique festival, there is not another one like it, there is not another place like it, and they managed to have great bands and great performances every year. Apparently, the opening day of rain this year might have put it out [...]
Denver's Monolith Festival holds a special place in my heart as it was thanks to an un-asked for photo pass that I began shooting photos, something which has really changed this site (hopefully for the better) and my life overall. Monolith has never been a gangbuster money-making event but it consistently secured a good collection of known and unknown musicial acts , many who became favorites of mine after discovering them there. Plus, it was well organized and in a relaxed atmophere, held at one of the world's natural wonders, Red [...]

There's nothing quite like a good, old fashioned zombie apocalypse to force a disparate band of strangers to work together for their common survival. Building upon that foundation, Left 4 Dead 2 emerges as a bigger, more diverse and comprehensive package than the original. Left 4 Dead 2 follows the bloody struggle of four random strangers as they fend off an undead horde and a few new super-zombies. Over the course of five campaigns, a new cast of survivors treks from Savannah, Georgia, all the way to New Orleans, Louisiana. Armed with new melee weapons and a bigger [...]

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" opens up with an image of a moon on screen suggesting the werewolves will come out and Bella's (Kristen Stewart) life is still dark and incomplete. The film ends with Bella taking an exaggerated breath of air, insinuating she will take a leap of faith with Edward. Everything in between is delivered exactly how Team Edward and Team Jacob fans want the plot to go down. WARNING: If you are on Team Edward then your [...]

Quick little post about out boys Hot Pink Delorean and their recent adventures overseas, where they ended up on Kissy Sell Out's Radio 1 show . We have the minimix and actual interview after the jump, as they say. Something nice to listen to during a spot of tea or whathaveyou. Hot Pink Delorean Interview on Kissy Sell Out's show (BBC Radio 1) - Oct 29th, 2009 ---------------------- [...]
Deep Sea Arcade – Lonely In Your Arms Pretty dang great to hear Deep Sea Arcade go back to that kinda scratchy, kinda swaggering '60s pop sound that made that early demo of their #1 jam Crouch End such a golden classic of 2008. Not that their more recent experiments with hi-fidelity haven't been extremely rewarding but seriously, when you've got handclaps and tinny drums and that Hawaii Five-O guitar sound why not just roll with it? Shit is scientifically proven to break hearts and/or move feet. Lonely In Your Arms is similar in [...]

Everyone wants to be remixed by Kissy Sell Out.p But after doing some amazing tricks with records from Dragonette, Chromeo, Calvin Harris and Mark Ronson, the British "electro-pop musical prodigy" has been touring and playing major festival in Europe this year to promote his debut artist album "Youth." Check out a guilt-free MP3 of "Apple Jelly" to get a taste of his music. His sound is electro-pop of the crunchy kind. It sound home-made but really well put together. It gives me a little bit of that Go Team vibe that packed a similar punch and was [...]

Coming in hot is one of our favorite riders, Eero Ettala. Fresh off a year of filming for his TV Show "Tracking Eero" for OAKLEY comes his "best video part never" to fill your shred brain with expletives like "WTF," "Wha?" and "Saaaweet!" BDN Stoke Certified. The "Tracking Eero" project in his own words… "When Mack Dawg Productions told me they were not making a video in 2009 I wasn't sure what to do about filming for this [...]
