Generationals - Angry Charlie from LaundroMatinee on Vimeo.New Orleans throwback rock band the Generationals are headlining Club Congress tonight, for the band's second Tucson show. Part of the same Park the Van roster as Dr. Dog and our own beloved Golden Boots, the Generationals are touring in support of their first album, Con Law. I talked to the band a couple weeks ago for a feature in the
Mike Doughty is one of the greatest summertime singer/songwriters, which makes his latest release seem a tad inappropriate. If only we'd had this album four months ago, we could enjoyed it with a beach bonfire. Even though Sad Man Happy Man comes late for summer bacchanalia, it has a gritty realness to it, which enables an autumn audience to feel comfortable around the warm glow of Doughty's guitar. If you're unfamiliar with Doughty, he is the former pipes behind '90s outfit Soul Coughing. In his solo music, Doughty's acoustic guitar and soulful lyrics are given [...]

If you still can't get enough of their mashups, they've just released the fourth installment of their famous mixtapes (download Vol. One , Vol. Two , and Vol. Three as well). Clocking in at just over an hour of instant party jams, it's available as a continuous mix and as separate tracks. [ Download HERE ] The Mixtape Volume Four Tracklist: 1. Intro 2. There is an platitude expression that goes, "The mind is a great servant, but a terrible master." There is a yogi exercise that is "being mindful of every moment". Although at first impression, these don't seem to be saying the same thing, I believe in fact that they are close. The overlapping of these ideas in my mind is this; Take control of your thoughts, get off autopilot. Auto pilot is the banal reactions and lazy observations, the rote routine of self. Auto pilot is where we let ourselves be controlled by what we think is "just who [...]

I can think of no better way to start our work week/Monday morning than with a huge gift in the form of something free, something amazing and something musically diversely perfect. Of course it comes from some of our fave Chicagoans, The Hood Internet . It's been just over a year since the last installment of their mixtapes dropped, they recently posted up their 300th "Hood track", and in order to celebrate, their new mixtape is all yours, mine and ours...for free! [...]

We told you it was coming soon and WE WERE NOT LYING: the newest installment of Hood Internet mixtapes, Volume Four. Following the same format of the first three volumes, we compiled our favorite Hood tracks that have dropped since the last mixtape PLUS a handful of unreleased bits and compacted them all into a non-stop mix that clocks in a lil bit over an hour. It's the soundtrack to your next house party. Enjoy! Download direct via Raptorhideout [continuous mix] Download via Sendspace [separated tracks] [...]
Uggs are called just that for a reason; they're terribly ugly. How Kel Spencer managed to make a cool track and video from the boots is beyond me. But he does, bringing along one of R&B's most unheralded talents, Jesse Boykins III , for a solid collaboration. The video is your standard "listen to me spit game while you bat your eyes at me" scenario. The ladies will think it's cute and daydream. The song, though, is like the one you learn word-for-word, picking up game along the way so you [...]

Don't start with me on the pic above . (Okay, Christian Bale is on GQ Magazine 's June Issue, check it out). On a more serious note, I may be pushing the envelope here. But really, this forthcoming months I'll be having the tightest schedule of all and seeing how things are going, a daily or (even weekly) post is out of the question. So I'm doing an advance Monthly Playlist of the best tracks for June. I've added a bunch of remixes and covers as well that I found oddly interesting. Just goes to show you should never [...]

Any day you get to end with a 300-year old double bass playing jazz interpretations and new work called "Cat Piano" dovetailed with Shelley Short's amazingly delicate and friendly voice is a good day indeed. Celebrating the release of Short's A Cave, A Canoo with a tight-knit crowd of friends and musicians, the Golden Bears kicked off the night. The Golden Bears have gotten great press in the past, and it is clearly well deserved. The story goes: their record was made while Julianna was pregnant, and once their daughter showed up [...]

As the Remix Roundups enter double digits I decided to drop the incremental titles and go for a more archive-friendly date format. You will thank me someday. About this collection of hot remixes? You can thank me now. ♫ The Very Best - Julia (Javelin Re-do) / This is one of the best remixes I've heard in a while . Javelin takes one of the weaker tracks off of TVB's fantastic album and completly rips it up, turning "Julia" in to a full throttle fist-pumper. [more The Very Best ] ♫ [...]

In the wake of pop's rediscovery of itself, prompted by the blitzkrieg success of punk, 1977 proved to be a splendid year for debut albums, indeed perhaps the best since 1969 kicked off the Golden Age Of Prog Rock. Most of the artists concerned were promising newcomers, but a fair number were veterans in new guises. In the UK, musicians who had cut their teeth in the back-to-basics pub-rock bands of 1973-75 recombined into new units or declared themselves solo artists and, riding on the New Wave of energy generated by punk, sought to combine their established chops with its [...]

We've written in the past about the cool things being done in Olympia, Washington by People in a Position to Know . They put out extremely limited edition records (often 73 singles) from very cool bands (Wand, Golden Boots, Casper and the Cookies, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Norfolk & Western...), focusing on quality over quantity, love over commerce. We've been stoked since May for a release PIAPTK have been promising since then, a 73 single from Jescos, a James Toth fronted super-group featuring fellow Tennesians Tim Bracy and Bingham Barnes. We're sure you're aware of our [...]

New mix tape from Borracho, that truly kicks ass in their own distinct style, plus also a new remix from the boys of First Platoon's - M.I.A.M.I a hip hop track worked over into a carnival of sounds that works the 80's Electro Funk tailfeather. Gimme your feedback so I can pass it onto the boys themselves. First Platoon - M.I.A.M.I - Borracho Remixx [...]
