It's Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Pinocchio as you've never seen them before: covered in blood and other bodily gore. Fairytale Fights takes a glut of familiar characters from your childhood, from Jack (of beanstalk fame) to the naked emperor (minus his new clothes), and puts them in a 3D platformer that tries its best to be witty, irreverent and tongue-in-cheek. Unfortunately, for the most part it fails miserably. Sure, there's something unhealthily gratifying about carving gingerbread men down to their basic ingredients with a chainsaw or slicing conjoined twins Hansel and Gretel into salami [...]

...stays in Vegas. Or something. We survived our Halloween excursion to Sin City. It could be called "From Big Elvis to Coolio in three drunken days." This is "Big Elvis"... down to 400 lbs from his original 800 lbs! Three solid daze of booze, broads, rock n roll, horror and fun! We ended up doing virtually everything on our list. Some of [...]

By now you've realized that violence and gore are not inherently scary. Only one in every million horror movies made is actually scary. Blood and brain matter no longer make the average viewer blink. The same can be said for violence in music, which has become less and less alarming to the listener. For proof, look no further than Eminem . He is one of the most successful hip-hop artists to top the charts, with songs that mix strong hooks and unexpected amounts of violence. Case in point: "'97 Bonnie and Clyde" from 1999's Slim Shady [...]

the gore vidal of rap or still a cornball in fact? Don't ask me why. But every now and again, I look around the internet to see what Anticon is up to. Well, Sole from Anticon has recorded perhaps the worst rap song in history, or the ballsiest song since ahem, "Makeshift Patriot" by Sage Francis. "My President is Black, and that don't mean jack" . Sole says on the hook of the first anti-Obama Hip Hop song, that sends up Young [...]
Director : Stewart Hendler Release Date : 4 September Review by Jack Burton Slasher movies, like many of life's more titillating pursuits, are all about the slow build. Many of them so much so that you could be forgiven for not actually caring when the veil is finally drawn aside and the shadowy killer revealed. Kudos to Sorority Row then, for offering up some expert foreplay, despite leaving me as ultimately unsatisfied as the movie's token 'geek' at a boozy frat party. [...]
The boys of Green Day once said to wake me up when December comes . While we're not there quite yet, this does mark the last Friday of September 2009 and thus, the last Friday Mixtape of September 2009. So, take the time to reminisce about the month that was Pavement, Kanye, and CoS' two year anniversary, while enjoying this week's best mix of new singles, covers, and remixes as well as mp3s from some up-and-comes you might just want to check out. NEW Singles: "Alleycat" by Awesome New [...]

I've been a fan of foreign-language cover versions of popular songs ever since I was young and I heard Frank Sinatra's English-language cover "My Way." See what I did there! The original was performed in French by Claude Francois and was titled " Comme D'habitude ." Its lyrics dealt not with the Chairman of the Board's lack of regrets but rather with the sad life of a man who has a series of one-night stands but is otherwise lonely (or a failing love affair but is still lonely - the French is a little confusing on this point, apparently because [...]

Given this year's summer weather conditions in Chicago - chilly with a taste of sunlight - nobody expected the onslaught of rain and wind that was August 7th, 2009. Incidentally, that happened to make up the opening day of Perry Farrell's summer music extravaganza, otherwise known as Lollapalooza. As fans rolled in at the crack of noon, rain followed... and lots of it. Some might say it was a dreary English day, which seemed fitting given the talent headlining - Depeche Mode , for those unsavvy with geography. Regardless, the bustling Windy City festival hosted thousands upon [...]

as the title says, this is another mix of random songs i've enjoyed recently. again no real common thread, running is it does from the post punk of zounds to the malawian afro beat of james msalakwa, from the absolutely classic to the absolutely unknown. ::: the acorn - low gravity ::: james msalakwa - timuonge chiuta ::: dinosaur jr - get me ::: wheat - don't i hold you ::: memory tapes - bicycle ::: zounds - can't cheat karma ::: xtc - yacht dance ::: gore vidals - fun today ::: the rural alberta advantage - [...]
If you just want the music scroll waaaaay down. This is epic rant. Right outside of Pittsburgh in a town called Oakmont there's a theater called The Oaks. It's been around over have a century, has a great screen, affordable ticket prices and a friendly staff. Throughout the year they have special midnight movie nights, where they show "classic" flicks like Jaws , The Thing and Vertigo . I go there almost every weekend. Last weekend they had a special double feature. First up was the 1975 blaxploitation classic Dolemite . [...]

Schadenfreude is a feeling you've probably had, even if you don't know what it means. German-born sociologist Theodor Adorno defined Schadenfreude as "largely unanticipated delight in the suffering of another which is cognized as trivial and/or appropriate." Anticipated or not, there is something slightly uncomfortable about taking pleasure in another's pain. But the singers in today's mix sound pretty damn smug about their adversaries' demise. People say, "hate to say I told you so," but really they love it. William Bell - I Told You So I bet you regret it already, [...]

We've got different opinions / You feel women should be Christian sitting home knitting and watching children / I feel women should be stripping and sinning – syringes in 'em tripping while their pimp brainwashes 'em in a building – Necro, "Light My Fire" I grew up watching such lyrically cunning MCs as Kool G Rap and Kool Keith not-so-metaphorically smack down women. And back then there were consequences: Old schoolers risked getting sued and picketed, and they had to be inventive with their flows. Keith left his " [...]
(Toronto) Watching nine people try to perform while crammed onto the tiny stage at the Horseshoe is always entertaining. That's what happened tonight as Regina Saskatchewan's' finest, Library Voices came into town. Tuesday night is Nu Music night down at the Horseshoe and it is always free. If you keep your eye on the listings you can catch some worthwhile bands on the cheap. Library Voices have a whole grab bag of instruments and sounds to draw from. What else would you expect when there are nine of them? Some strong [...]
Oh man, Thursday was crazy. I started by getting my pass then headed off to the Town Hall meeting, which was interesting in several different ways. Then I walked over to see Dinosaur Bones at Sunrise Records. I did some interviews, and got to see a few songs by Spiral Beach, playing outside to a good crowd at Yonge-Dundas Square. Since I was with some friends, I decided to follow them to the Arts & Crafts showcase at the Courthouse. We got there, got stamped, went out for a quick bite to eat, then back to the Courthouse for Zeus. [...]
2 Live Crew - Pop That Coochie a.k.a. Pop That Pussy (1991) About a month ago I posted the Most Explicit Videos for Music Video Monday, but I forgot to post one of the most raunchy and graphic videos I've ever seen. When I was a kid 2 Live Crew's "Pop That Coochie" was banned on practically every channel. The girls in the video are damn near naked and "freak dancing" like crazy. All [...]
Euna Lee, and Laura Ling, two reporters who work for Al Gore's Current TV were in China reporting on North Korean escapees when they were captured by North Korean border guards in March of this year. Today they will go on trial for "hostile acts" and crossing into North Korea illegally. Some thoughts on this. First, those two ladies must make a "clank clank" when they walk because they definitely have balls of steel. However, we can't help but say "what were you thinking?!" You [...]

A month or so back we posted a blurb about the upcoming Valery Gore remix contest hosted by Do Right Music. Well, the time for submissions has come and gone already and they've announced the winner. Honourable mentions came from several new up comers including Toronto via Miami's, TEEN. But in the end, it was our good friends Waterloo, KIDSTREET that takes home the top prize! Valery Gore's, 'Shoes of Glass' is already a nice jazzy pop track suitable for any dinner or cocktail party, but when Kidstreet gets their hand on it, they [...]

Interesting show at the Brattle on Thursday comedy, music and Tanya. Don't know if there are tix left or not but it might be worth investigating. Lots of country twinged music this weekend. Starting on Thursday, check out either Girls, Guns and Glory at Great Scott or Jimmy Ryan at Atwoods. Church is hosting its 3rd Annual Alt Country Extravaganza on both Friday and Saturday nights. Both nights look good, but Saturday's lineup looks a little stronger. If country's not your thing, see Andrea Gillis on Saturday, she always puts on a great show. Here's a [...]
