( Editor's note: Two straight weeks of entropic wandering on Lazy Saturday, principally because of the following: I'm tired. I'm stressed out. I'm busy. I've got a grant burning, a paper cooking, IEP progress reports to write, hogs to feed, a harem to tend to, capital gains taxes to calculate, and so forth. I don't have any space left in the old cognitive load to give you a well-developed, cohesive bit of content today. You get a numbered list. The items contained therein are not connected. Unless you think that the universe has thrown them together to be reflective of [...]
Meh! Meh I say! Dead Or Alive You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) (Extended Mix) Brand New Lover (Bubble Mix) Did you know Jessica Simpson tried to cover You Spin Me Round? She failed because she's a no-talent piece of trash who should fall off the face of the Earth. Seriously. How many great songs does that vapid talentless nimrod need to butcher? She fucked up that song, Robbie Williams epic power ballad "Angels," "Take My Breath Away" and "These Boots Are Made For Walking." [...]
Friday, November 20, 2009 We are creeping, quite quickly actually in to the looming holiday season and the studios are sort of coughing up the small game in lieu of the enormous money makers to come. Of course, this is the weekend of Twilight, so perhaps I'm just talking out of my ass, but this feels like the calm before the storm. An animated flick from the creators of Shrek, a slightly chintzy looking sports flick, and of course Bela and Edward - consider me non-plussed. It's the limited films I'm interested in this [...]

I'm not yet ready to anoint the 2009-10 edition of Syracuse Orange basketball the best team since their 2003 championship; heck, it's probably a little premature to call them better than last year's Sweet 16 version, led by lottery pick Jonny Flynn. But there's no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best defensive teams I've ever seen at the Cuse. And they are off to one hell of a start. One night after dominating #12 Cal, they dismantled defending national champion UNC by an 87-71 margin, sparked by a 20-1 start of the second half that [...]

E very genre of music has an ideal listening environment. Classical is best heard at a smyphony. Arena rock should be heard at, well, at a large arena. Electronic music? Nothing beats a dance party. But whether you're a club person, a bar junkie or a house party lover, you've probably encountered a lot of obnoxious people during your nights out. Below are nine of the people we hate most in no particular order. Got any good ideas for future lists you'd like to see? Send them over . [...]
![[New] J. Cole- Lights Please Remix (Produced By XV)](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2141417_lg.jpg)
If it isn't two of the best out there today, I am still telling you XV will explode onto the scene. He already got a couple songs to get radio play but this guy is nuts. J. Cole is J. Cole and everyone knows where he is going. Anyway I'll let the man behind the beat, XV explain this one for himself. I told J. Cole I had an idea on a remix for his single, "Lights Please", when we performed at the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors Pre-Party. This was the outcome… [...]

Back in 1997 Anthony Lovett and Matt Maranian wrote and published what eventually became my favorite Los Angeles guidebook. That book's name was (and is) LA Bizarro . A few years ago on this website I talked to Matt about the original book's undertaking ( fun interview with Matt here ). Since that time the two authors have now revised, updated and significantly expanded that original tome, and their collective output was published by Chronicle Books just this fall. In the 2009 updated edition of LA Bizarro (available at the time of this [...]

Zinc has been storming the dirty bass electro scene of late with an impressive run of floor filling bangers which have now been compiled into his recently released Crack House EP , and to further cement his rapid ascent in his new chosen genre he has banged out a massive 64 track Essential Mix. DJ Zinc - Essential Mix Tracklist 1. Geeneus ft Ms Dynamite – Get Low (CDR) 2. Zinc – Nu Sound (Bingo Bass) 3 Acid [...]

○○○○○ HARDCORE punk band Gallows 's second album Grey Britain , suggested as a possible Album Of The Year on the Facebook page , sees the group adding a splash of colour to their debut album's sound. Don't get me wrong, Watford's Gallows are still the musical equivalent of having acid thrown in your eyes. But where Orchestra Of Wolves was just angry and loud and raucous, Grey Britain has a focus. Lyrical vitriol towards 'broken Britain' is matched by a musical expansiveness - as well as the group's established acerbic [...]
I wrote this post over a year ago - in August 2008, to be exact - after I got a cease and desist for posting a song by a girl named Gabriella Cilmi. For whatever reason, I didn't post this. Maybe I figured some mysterious record company man in a long black coat with scars on his face would whack me in the parking lot if I did. Not so worried about that now. And, if you don't mind me noting: as of today - November 20, 2009 - I haven't heard a lot [...]

We've got a brand new contest featuring A Wilhelm Scream today. The band has hooked us up with a portable turntable, a limited silkscreened poster and a copy of their new EP, A Wilhelm Scream . All you need to do to get that stuff for yourself, is fill out the form below.

I'm with you, kids - let's celebrate the end of another week. Before we leave, though, let's do a quick recap: - We had more fun with Magnetic Fields covers . There's a whole slew of more fun coming this Sunday, when Part Five drops. - I dreamt of crack . which was whack, but it helped to remind me of The Moldy Peaches, which was whacker. It also reminded me to subtly plug my nascent dream blog , which was the whackest of all. - We saw Random [...]

Alicia Keys will be launching her own jewelry line. On Monday, the 12-time Grammy Award-winning songstress will introduce a jewelry collection called The Barber's Daughters at a temporary shop at Collette Blanchard Gallery at 26 Clinton Street in Lower Manhattan. The store will be open on Monday and Tuesday only to help generate buzz among the public and retailers for the brand's fall 2010 launch. Founded with jewelry designer Gisèle Theriault , the collection [...]

I think Dres has been bumping that Aaliyah classic "Age Ain't Nuthin But A Number" cause he's not letting his closer proximity to AARP status slow him down one bit. I guess hip-hoppers are taking verbal Viagra these days and are subsequently lasting longer (pause) in the game. Back like he never left, Dres , one-half of the '90s hip hop crew Black Sheep , is not really feeling the hip-hop retirement plan and is gearing up to release two new projects in the coming months. According to AllHipHop, the homie Dres, who's best known by [...]

You may not know Fred but the chances are you will be familiar with one, if not more, of their songs. Over the past year they have become a firm fixture on Irish radio with a series of singles off third album Go God Go that have seen them take their suitably off-kilter Cork roots and polish them up into the brightest of pop music. Why then do they find themselves playing the basement of a larger venue that has played host to many of their contemporaries. It's hard to understand but somewhere along the line something is [...]

By Carrie Brownstein And it's naptime. ( courtesy of The Patton Veterinary Hospital ) It's hard to believe that we've reached the end. For the past two weeks, all of us -- the NPR Music Team, a handful of outside contributors and myself -- have explored the last 10 years in music. Did we cover [...]

i was one of the lucky 50,000 or so who got to see nirvana's second performance at the reading festival in 1992. it was my first visit, just for the day, and i'll never forget bouncing up and down with everyone else to "in bloom" trying to save my reading fest poster from getting crushed while clutching a plastic bag containing this great indie compilation cd. put together by melody maker, it's a pretty good survey of the early 90s indie scene with a good smattering of bands demonstrating the scene's inherent quirkiness. so i'm glad it didn't [...]
