This is why Autumn is my favorite season : "I don't know about you, but I can't wait to get my hands on some fucking gourds and arrange them in a horn-shaped basket on my dining room table. That shit is going to look so seasonal. I'm about to head up to the attic right now to find that wicker fucker, dust it off, and jam it with an insanely ornate assortment of shellacked vegetables. When my guests come over it's gonna be like, BLAMMO! Check out my shellacked decorative vegetables, assholes. Guess what season it is—fucking fall. There's [...]

Yes, this weekend I am a superstar DJ, or at least I get to kid myself that I am one. Apart from full-on dancey, mixey, beat-matching stuff (and even then I have my doubts) I have never thought of DJing as much of a skill, I have to confess. As I said in the comments section of a thread discussing this ages ago, however, if it's possible to do it badly, which it clearly is, then it must be a skill. Still, irrespective of not really knowing what I am doing, and the dubious merits of my presence to everyone [...]

Last year I interviewed Blind Pilot because, although they play lighter, pop/folk music, they are exceptional. This year I covered Y La Bamba, whose sparse music highlights a distinctive vocalist. Here are some notable options for those of you who prefer the lighter side of music. Pilar French is undeniably a very good singer. It used to be that you couldn't get to be a star unless you could actually sing; i.e. carry your voice quite a bit better than the person hanging up the washing in the [...]

Today is do stuff around the house day. I have a list. I always have a list. The bird feeders need to be filled, the deck furniture covered, the laundry washed and the house decorated for fall and Halloween. Up from the cellar will come my gourds and pumpkins, my witches and monsters and my ravens and spiders. It will be fun. I loved to color. Crayola crayons and a coloring book were Christmas stocking and Easter basket mainstays. The coloring books back then had huge pictures on every page. Santa was big at Christmas. The problem, [...]

The members of Sturgeon Bay , Wisconsin's PurgAtory hill are pat mAcdonald and melaniejane . But the boss of these dark blues is pat's Lowebow Purgatory Hill Harp , built by Memphis luthier/genius John Lowe aka Johnny Lowebow . The Hill Harp through pat's hands throws down a fat bottom end and gives his sound some serious heft and whoomp, something sadly lacking in some alt-blues outfits since everyone started to eschew bass players in the late nineteen-ought-ninetys. Many of the outsider blues outfits gravitate towards the more [...]
The season for tricks and treats and goblins and gourds is upon us. And you know what that means on Pop Candy: I'm looking for your best Halloween-themed photos.
Can you believe it's October? Where has the year gone? We're already counting down to Halloween, and soon I'll have to start shopping for gourds and those "fun size" bags of Butterfingers. Mmm.

Fairly quiet this evening aside from the weeklies. We'll have an interview up for you soon. Disqo Disco (Fallout Lounge) 90's Night With Yeah Def and Ian Bangs (Hailey's) The Gourds (Dan's Silver Leaf) Open Mic Night ( Rubber Gloves )
I love my outside shower, especially this time of the year. The cold air and the hot water make for steam which rises and billows around the outside of the shower. I reluctantly finished my shower and turned off the water this morning. I don't know how much longer I'll be out there, but it will be sad to have to come back inside. I filled all the bird feeders earlier. The new ones have so far kept the squirrels at bay. I figure a message has been going from treetop to treetop inviting the squirrels to a [...]

"One day [Doug Sahm] said to me, 'You know, in the early Seventies, man, Willie was the old guy. He brought it to us and gave it to us to carry it on, and that's what I'm doing with you guys. You guys are it. You guys take it and go with it.'" --Kevin Russell to Christopher Hess, Songs of Innocence and Experience , Austin Chronicle, September 22, 2000 Doug Sahm & The Gourds - Michoacan High Sierra Music Festival, Quincy, CA July 3, 1998 [...]

As we transition from summer to fall, I think it's only appropriate that we kick summer's angry ass out the door Adios Lounge style. Here's a compilation of music that's helped keep me sane during a summer of continuous 100+ degree weather. I think it's a good mix of soul and rock, but those designations are a bit loose. The soul stuff rocks and the rock stuff has soul, so everyone wins. Incidentally, if someone asked you what the Adios Lounge sounds like, you could probably do worse than send them this mix. I'll [...]

Change is in the air in the Lone Star State, and it's not just the football that comes in with the crisper air. September marks the start of the concert season in Texas, which traditionally stretches from Austin City Limits to South by Southwest in March. ACL isn't until October this year, but this month is no slouch. Highlights include a trio of unfortunately emo-ish named Scottish bands combining for a night in Austin, a couple of 2008 newbies touring the college circuit, and in a perfect storm of serendipity, the creators of my favorite album [...]

Last week, I previewed the nominees for "Best New & Emerging Artist" at this year's Americana Awards and Honors and asked you to vote for who you thought should win. You chose The Band of Heathens by an almost two-to-one margin over Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles. This week, we're going to dip into another category and ask you to vote on the "Americana Song of the Year." We'll start with "Chalk" by Buddy Miller and Patty Griffin from Buddy and Julie Miller's 2009 release [...]

Seriously Aasim sure knows how to throw an AWESOME birthday bash! First off, this Saturday he's got both stages at Mohawk and second, the lineup is sick (Harlem, Ume, Ringo Deathstarr, to mention a few). The best part, it's only an $8 cover. Just remember it starts early (7pm). Also check out our other recommendations for this week. You can also follow us on Twitter (@ Ultra8201 ). Tuesday (8/18) : Ear Pwr, Toro Y Moi, Follow That [...]
