It's been a busy last few months for Ben Gibbard . First there was that Jay Farrar collaboration on the Jack Kerouac soundtrack . And, of course, there's the Death Cab for Cutie song on that soundtrack for the shiny vampire movie. Plus, the man got married! Yet despite all this, Mr. Zooey Deschanel has once again made time found time to join an already all-star line-up for a killer new album. And this time it's not just for our entertainment. According to Spinner.com , Gibbard [...]
Contrast Podcast recently asked music bloggers like myself to submit our favorite 50 songs of the year for their annual "Festive 503 podcast. Our selections were then compiled into a shortlist and now we've been asked to recruit votes to narrow it down. For the curious, I've bolded the 10 songs I personally voted for. I really, really want "Nice Very Nice" by Kurt Vonnegut & Dave Soldier (from their album Ice-9 Ballads ) to make the final list. Not only because it's my favorite song of the year, from my favorite album of the year, [...]

Matter of Time mp3 The Leisure Society The Sleeper ..... ..... buy it Well, now this is getting interesting... Over at the Contrast Podcast , Tim's solicited everyone for their favorite 50 songs of 2009, remember? From all the responses he's compiled the top 155. I'm very impressed with the list! If you didn't submit your faves yet, you've still got a chance to get in the game at this point! Help us out, eh? (I"ve highlighted my top 10 in blue) Here's [...]

Filed under: News , New Music It looks like the ' New Moon ' soundtrack isn't the only compilation getting a little help from Death Cab for Cutie 's Ben Gibbard this fall. Gibbard has reportedly signed on to contribute a version of Neil Young 's 'Harvest Moon,' a song he covered played live from time to time, to the 'GIVE Seattle' charity album. The project features Seattle-based artists and benefits the Arts Corp and numerous food banks. [...]
Seattle's Grand Archives are playing at Plush tomorrow (11/17), and if it's anywhere near as good as the band's first Tucson show (June 2008), it's not to be missed.I have a review of the band's latest album, Keep In Mind Frankenstein, in this week's Tucson Weekly. So check it out, and check out the show:Not one to offer up much in the way of new tricks, Grand Archives' Mat Brooke instead

Oslo Novelist - Grand Archives I Love You, Too - S Carissa's Wierd are no more, but this is just about the next best thing. Grand Archives probably will never make my heart race in quite the same way that it did when I first heard You Should Be At Home Here , but they are a mighty fine band. Add in an opening performance from Jenn Ghetto as S , and you've got almost the whole gang back together. Ghetto has two records - [...]

[Birthday wishes to Butch Walker on Saturday. ... Here's what's on my weekend radar, for one reason or another — for a more comprehensive list, please visit Duke at You Set the Scene :] Tonight: It's Week 2 of Julian Casablancas' flashy residency at the Downtown Palace Theatre, and when I saw the opener last week the Strokes frontman-turned-synth-rocker promised to tweak things every week. One change is that a second opening band has been added, the Growlers joining [...]
When I heard 'Oslo Novelist' by Grand Archives for the first time a few days ago, I loved it immediately - so much so, that it became a late entry in my Festive 50, actually barging its way into the top 10. I'd heard of Grand Archives before but it wasn't until this week I found out they're by Mat Brooke, ex-Carissa's Wierd and Band Of Horses guitarist. I can certainly hear the Carissa's Wierd influence on this track, and so it's no bloody wonder I love them. 'Oslo Novelist', from the recently released Keep In Mind Frankenstein [...]

Hope you enjoyed the Halloween episodes! They were a bit more fun to make than the usual weekly episodes, though also a bit more work. I think I doubled my lifetime whispering by doing the "voices"for those. Our two-year-old, Sydney, helped me do this one. Ray Davies Appears at the Orpheum on Saturday Night I didn't get up to as much as I'd hoped last week, but did catch Julian Casablancas and the Happy Hollows at Spaceland. Casablancas didn't do anything to win me back, but most of the crowd seemed really into it. I'll definitely be at Ray Davies this Saturday and I'll most likely check out more of the Happy Hollows tonight. Monday 11/9/09 [Pick of the Night] [...]

Inevitably, a love of coverage leads to a constant, ever-vigilant search for thoughtful, well-crafted reinterpretation. I spend hours each week mining full albums for the hidden cover song, and scanning MySpace and email inbox for the promotional, the one-off acoustic in-studio radio track, and the otherwise unreleased singleton, and the endless discovery is eminently worth the pursuit. But there's no question that tribute albums are the cover lover's bread and butter. I gather these things in like truffles, and hold a special place for them in my heart and in my [...]
Former Carissa's Wierd frontman and Band Of Horses guitarist Mat Brooke has returned with the second album from Grand Archives. Keep In Mind Frankenstein (Sub Pop) is a mellower, darker outing than the band's debut, featuring theremin, pedal-steel guitar and a "mammoth glass harp" constructed from wine glasses and wood. The Seattle band is touring [...]
Maybe you haven't noticed, but it's the golden age of music video all over again. Once left to the likes of big budgets, Top 40 and MTV, indie musicians are teaming with burgeoning auteurs to create a new wave of DIY audio/visual splendor. This week's edition: Ramona Falls, Grand Archives, Bishop Allen and Spiral Stairs. The second installment of our new A/V series-- extra emphasis on the V-- includes new videos featuring both the animated (one intricately, one generally) and the non-animated, the narrative-based and the less linear. All tend to work well, as we'll see, [...]

The second installment of A Retrospective, in which I recap my favorite albums released from 2000 to 2008, this time: 2001. Wrought with turmoil and watching a life fall apart as so many others were having similar experiences but in a different manner; that was 2001 for you. The year I turned 21 (hence the wine bottle photo above). A year that lives in infamy. Young or old, we all seemed to grow up that year. Music, too seemed to progress in ways unthought, even before that fateful day. [...]

12 februari 2010 - Lund, Mejeriet (Stora salen) 13 februari 2010 - Göteborg, Sticky Fingers (Top Floor) /Woody West 14 februari 2010 - Stockholm, Kägelbanan Biljetter? [...]

So after listening to Brady's Autumn Shuffle last week, I was inspired to create a seasonal playlist of my own. I didn't put quite as much thought into my list as Brady, rather I simply chose to create a list of songs and albums that I feel both musically and lyrically fit the mood of the season. Let me know if you have any songs or albums that you really fall for this time of year. I hope that this playlist makes your ears bleed til winter comes. matt pond PA I [...]
