The first update of 2010 (and the first in more than 3 months!) is two days late, partly due to a computer virus, but better late than never! I'd almost forgotten how to write these. The website hasn't been entirely fallow since November; I've posted Best of 2009 posts on "music albums" and " Summerworks shows" , with "Fringe shows" coming up soon, and "comedy shows" and "music singles" not far behind. But the core of the site - the updates - well, it's good to have one of those up again, and I'm going to try to [...]

My friends and I created a mixtape club a few years back with the idea that we'd meet, share mixtapes, listen to mixtapes, eat pizza and have a few beers together. For music obsessives like myself - it was not just a great way to hear new music, but an awesome way to spend the day. The first meeting was a success, so we kept it going - month after month for over a year - until for some reason we just stopped sometime early last year. Recently, we decided it was time to get the band [...]

speeding things up here... Islands - "Tender Torture" "Tender Torture" has this whole wish-fulfillment/denial thing going on. The melody is written in sections, any of which could be great songs on their own, and the band's strategy is to run with a particular riff or chord progression until you desperately want to hear it again, and then of course shift into something else, which ends up being even better. Thorburn's writing has never been more refined, or his peculiar style as perfectly envisioned, as [...]
Simon Cowell may have just rendered the biggest judgment call of his career with his decision to bid farewell to American Idol . But what is his real legacy as a talent spotter? Before he calls in his manservants to ship his tight black shirts over to The X Factor , we decided to take a look back at Simon's best — and worst — judgments on Idol . No question, he possesses keen insight. But maybe there's also a reason the final voting is left up to America. [...]
The sky is gray white with clouds. A breeze stirs the leaves and sways the smaller branches. Nothing will melt today. Even I will bundle up to do errands. Tonight it will be 17°. Winter is having its way. We had one car when I was a kid. My mother didn't even know how to drive. She waited for my father to take her grocery shopping every Friday night. If she needed something during the week, she'd send me on my bike to the red or the white store. Usually it was for bread. Milk got delivered. Sometimes [...]

Till Von Sein is the master of arrogance. He's gotta be our favorite German dude mostly because he rocks crispy white tee's with catchy slogans on them for like maybe two or three uses tops and then throws them away. Plus whenever he's buying sneakers, homeboy always cops two pair. I mean, if that ain't keeping it REALLY real in Berlin, than we don't even know.[...] http://blog.soulclap.us/2010/0 1/07/episode-63-till-von-swizz le/ Motorbass – Neptune Frank West – We do Tom Gray – Nobody Loves You [...]

In the studio, TVS (as the kids call him) was a force in 2009 putting out soulful and pop infused Berlin sounding tech house [...]
Note: This list eschews the obvious (Justice League!), the pretty-far-along (Deadpool!) and the already done (even if you sucked, you were Superman, Brandon!) in favor of those books that need their adaptations developed NOW! As always, I favor capes over clothes and lean heavily towards Marvel and DC. Those are my personal biases. If you don't like it, start your own blog. 15. The Falcon. Medium: Movie. Pitch: Like Batman, only with a poor black dude. Dream lead: Derek Luke (Antoine Fisher) [...]

Like most people, I didn't exactly have the best taste of music right away. In fact it took a better part of this decade to figure out I needed to re-evaluate my tastes. I had to let go of my safety harnesses and start listening to music that wasn't in my comfort zone. A decade ago I was 16 yrs old...so back then I was listening to angry rock music and angry techno music. Basically I was listening to nothing but Deftones and Aphex Twin. While both amazing, no one can live solely on cheeseburgers and fries (as much as [...]

Diamond District - In The Ruff [ Mello Music Group ] Taking artists at their word is a notoriously tricky enterprise. Even allowing for 100 percent sincerity, intentions and ambitions are often discordant with the final results. Luckily, anyone attempting to [...]

It does only seem like last year when there was a debate in the media about what to call this decade. I've really enjoyed reading the various 'best of ...' lists in the media and on the blogsphere. This post aims to outline my perspective on the Irish Music Scene over the last decade! By the year 2000, we had accumulated a wealth of disposable income which in the main resulted in more of us attending gigs, more of us learning to play instruments and more [...]

Hey guys! Merry belated Christmas, I hope you're enjoying your holidays. I want to incorporate some of my personal life stories/latest findings/my outfits to this blog to make it more of a personal blog, and not just "the blog that reposts what other blogs post". So, my Christmas day was pretty boring, I woke up at around noon and went to a boring family friend's dinner potluck. Even so, this year I haven't been feeling up to par with the Christmas spirit. Nothing seems that special this year. My cousin from Montreal visited us for a week though, [...]

Can't believe it's already been a decade. I'm trying to think about the person I used 2 be back in 1999. I wonder how familiar I am with that bro, or how much I respect him. Theoretically, I have grown up and become a more 'cultured' person with a developed+refined taste in all aspects of life, including my favourite music. Piecing together 'The Best Albums/Artists/Songs/Bands of the Decade' seems tricky, like some sort of existential reflection of urself. I feel like most websites that focus on music create 'best of year/decade' [...]

The current crop of indie rock pinups have had their sartorial sensibilities played with by the New York Times already -- a couple of times! Fashion and buzz bands are highly bloggable bedfellows: the Gray Lady analyzed artists' fashion sense last year, and dressed them up in a bunch of haute couture this past Coachella. Now it's Vogue 's turn to let 'em play with their look , as part of the fashion rag's focus on major European high fashion houses rebranding, and turning over control to "emerging designers." They are called [...]

On Saturday, Dec. 5, WW freelancers Nilina Mason-Campbell and Whitney Hawke took their Twilight -fandom to a new level, venturing out to the Tonic Lounge to see some dude who co-wrote a song for the original soundtrack. Normally we wouldn't post a live review so late, but this is just too weird to resist. I can't wait to see what happens in the comment section. -Ed. I often ask myself what becomes of a pop culture phenomena after it's time has passed? Pop culture is so very of-the-moment. As in the case of [...]

In order to keep Kanye West from dominating this inherently absurd endeavor, I imposed a couple of rules on myself. I could list nothing from 2009 and no artist could appear more than once. Radiohead's not here. That's on purpose. I shudder to think, however, of the unintentional omissions that are bound to keep me up at night. The 25 Best Albums 1. Johnny Cash- My Mother's Hymn Book 2004 Redemption songs. 2. Kanye West- Graduation [...]

Last Friday night I attended the third and final Vancouver show of Lady Gaga's Monster Ball . I got tickets about a month ago, which in itself was a small miracle. The Lady can certainly sell out a theater. Anyways, the night was fantastic. We had floor seats, right on the aisle toward the right side of the stage. We were sat by three adorable children. The two youngest were dressed up like they were going to the opera. I'm not sure what exactly they (or their grandparents, who bought them the tickets) were expecting. Let's just [...]
