With Thanksgiving now less than two weeks away, I figured it was about time to repost my tried and true recipe for brined and roasted turkey. So what if I ganked the original recipe from the amazing Alton Brown a few years ago. I've made enough delicious changes that it really feels like mine though. I'm still thinking about the possibility of cooking something else a little less traditional for Thanksgiving... something like a Bacon Explosion perhaps. (Yum!) And my mother's vegan pumpkin pie to balance it all out. Oh yeah! Here's the recipe: [...]

This Sunday and Monday, DEVO is performing two of its most beloved albums at Seattle's intimate Moore Theater. The first night, 1978 album Q: Are We Not Men?, A: We Are DEVO! will be played in its entirety. In 2009, this record still sounds exactly as God and Brian Eno intended. Eno's production is clear and visceral in a way the group never was again. But that's the rub when you believe in De-Evolution: Things start out uncontrollably great, and eventually shrivel up. Portland, you are probably too cheap to woo acts that charge $38-75 (not including service [...]
Most Likely To: break her poor father's heart. The phrase "preacher's daughter" is almost universally regarded as synonymous with "fun person to know on a Saturday night." Why, just look at that Lori Singer from Footloose ! Out playing chicken on deserted highways and makin' bacon with that bad boy who brought dancing to town. Oh, her poor father! Trying to take a stand for something in this wicked old world, and for his troubles gets undermined by his own beloved baby girl. Dear me! If this humble reverend had [...]

It's a slow one this week, which is fine considering the reunion extravaganza happening next week (Polvo, Os Mutantes). As such, we'll poach Jay-Z's latest (which is available exclusively this week on Rhapsody) and take a gander at A.A. Bondy's latest. They Might Be Giants will get their own post (once I have a chance to listen / see) next week, but their latest kidtastic adventure is available on iTunes this week. Outside of that, Datarock's latest finally gets physical release here, and there's a greatest hits compilations for both Drive-By Truckers and The Apples in Stereo. Playlist: [...]
Last week I made a CD of songs about booze and/or drinking for a friend. Today Paste posted a fun list of 21 Songs About Booze , in honor of the retirement of 95-year-old bartender Angelo Cammarata . Interestingly, our playlists only overlap by one song. Paste's 21 Songs About Booze 1. The Replacements - "Beer for Breakfast" 2. The Minus Five - "Cigarettes, Coffee and Booze" 3. Courtney Jaye - "Box Wine" 4. Jerry Lee Lewis - "Jack Daniels Old No. 7" 5. Todd Snider - "Beer Run" 6. [...]

Heading out to the Wonder Ballroom on a Thursday night seemed a bit out of character for me. Especially since, from what I recall, church services are typically held on Sundays. But, I figured what the hell; The Reverend Horton Heat can make up whatever rules he likes. Besides, I think I was ready to be revived after nearly ten years of both punk and public worship abstinence. This floundering soul was ready to hear a powerful and uplifting sermon from a reputable and persuasive member of the clergy. Outside [...]

DOWNLOAD: Tortoise - Prepare Your Coffin (MP3) Tortoise has added a July 18th in-store performance at Other Music to its schedule of upcoming shows . The band is on tour in support of Beacons of Ancestorship , out now on Thrill Jockey. "Prepare Your Coffin," above, is from that record. In 1924 on this day, my Dad was born, and therefore, you'll gather correctly - he's celebrating his birthday today - eighty five years old. I'm up early wrapping one or two gifts, before heading round to see if I can't drag him out to lunch or an early dinner later. Regrettably, much more so for him, either medication side-effects or causes unknown robbed him of most all sense of taste & smell a few years ago, so he's not exactly big on a good meal, still remembering what things should taste like, rather than the sometimes unexpected [...]

The Devil Makes Three The great thing about having friends scattered all over the country is that inevitably I get turned on to bands and music that I probably would have never found without a little nudge in the right direction. Case in point, my friend Hollie who lives out in central Oregon and who has guided me towards a number of great West Coast bands whose music is sometimes slow in making it back East. I can't imagine that I would have ever stumbled upon the now-defunct Inkwell Rhythm Makers from [...]

50 Cent once teased Cam'ron for his nonsensical rhyme schemes. True, there's times when Killa Cam sounds like he's the narrator for his own line of Dipset nursery stories but if you listen closely, you'll notice Cam's rhyme book isn't always easily made the butt of a punchline. In the closing days of the release of Cam'ron's fifth solo album Crime Pays , here's a brief look at some of the Harlemite's brainiest bars. Putin computers and boogity boogities need not apply. Lyrical Gangster [...]

the stars put me onto this one night early last month. . . . . Working my way through a few internet radio shows on my google reader I came across a backlog of Micheal Rutten's soulsearching shows . I chose #569. & at the end of what was already a very strong, diverse schooling in music from all across the map - came this. . . Courtesy of the UK's Emanative . an exquisitely beautiful, effortlessly listenable passage of music. and in a day and age where people are churning podcasts/selections [...]

For easy reference, here is the full best of 2007 list, with links for each album's review. It's been some work, but great fun to do. As the year winds down (or up, depending on half-full or half-empty glasses and whatnot), so does this blog. The Top Albums of 2008 countdown is over, and with this final installment, my weekly mix year-end round-up is now finished. This collection of mixes features themes on solo artists, travel, Scandinavia, autumn, 4AD, more synthpop, literature, more dance, more cover versions, Halloween, guilty pleasures, winter, celebrities, songs of 2008, and Christmas. Enjoy, and I hope I can fill 2009 with more quality mixes. It's not quite over yet because Tuesday will feature one last mix of the year for New [...]
We've been honored to run reviews and mixes from Of The Week's Neddy since the early days of Hidden Track in 2006. Neddy recently published his Top 69 Albums of 2008 list and we wanted to share it with you... The Top 10 (alphabetical): Apollo Sunshine - Shall Noise Upon A real masterpiece of an album. Not sure how a band that is [...]
