I'm with you, kids - let's celebrate the end of another week. Before we leave, though, let's do a quick recap: - We had more fun with Magnetic Fields covers . There's a whole slew of more fun coming this Sunday, when Part Five drops. - I dreamt of crack . which was whack, but it helped to remind me of The Moldy Peaches, which was whacker. It also reminded me to subtly plug my nascent dream blog , which was the whackest of all. - We saw Random [...]
Holy fucking ape shit I'm really excited about this record coming out. I just found out, thanks to Blabbermouth.com , that the tracklist and label have been confirmed for Shining's Black Jazz record. If you rememeber us writing about this a few months ago in out response to listening to their last record Grindcore and being in awstruck of what we where hearing. Well from the looks of it in their comments about the record and the video, this looks to be even more brutal and crazier then the last record. Here is the comment from their [...]
Newcastle may not be your typical hotspot for fresh and upcoming bands but nonetheless, Little Comets are representing their city in every way possible. With a début album due relatively soon and the steady wave of hype growing exponentially behind them, they've decided to see the year out with a selection of UK tour dates.

As I said, Matthew Lindley & Troubadour Deluxe were the openers. If it falls on the opening act to truly warm up a crowd, in a bar, on a Friday night, ML&TD did the trick just fine. Not too flashy, just a five-piece with a few pretty harmonies, glib songwriting and a lead guitarist (Dean Kattari) that deftly noodled through each song like it was the first one he ever learned. Lindley's songs tend toward the stories of Americana; sappy love songs, soul baring confessionals with a sense of fun and a country edge. Highlight was [...]

It's 11:30pm, and Maluca has just finished her set at The Fader's One Step Beyond Party at the Natural History Museum. If you think there would be any signs that the New York native was tired after a dynamic set, you'd be sorely mistaken. Known for her uniquely fast musical delivery, the Bronx cumbia songstress is a ball of energy, talking quickly about everything from jobs cutting limes to where her music is headed. With a nod on the recent URB: 25 NOW! Artists to [...]
My favourite holiday spot as a child was Disney World in Orlando, Florida, because with the sun always shining and the palm trees swaying, it was a world away from what I was used to growing up in the Mid-Atlantic. My parents probably recognised early on that I had boffin tendencies, because I avoided the roller coasters of the Magic Kingdom and gravitated towards the technologic geekery of Epcot Center. But as a child, there was wonderment to be had to be thinking about what could be in the future, and that's what Epcot, 'Experimental Prototype Community of [...]

You know that one song, the one you love because the lyrics seem like the songwriter just reached inside your head and grabbed them? The Avett Brothers continue to make those perfect songs for me on their latest album, I and Love and You, released in late September. In their first major studio record, the Avett Brothers continue to establish themselves as an important American group with an unstoppable voice. Their unique blend of bluegrass-folk-punk translates well to a major label, without many moments of "Oh, they sold [...]
This week has seen a load of justified gush over Beach House's new material; firstly 'Norway' and then the subsequent album leak of Teen Dream. Perfectly timed into that ever-growing hype is the announcement that the band have announced a slew of European dates in 2010 including Dublin on the 13th of February in Whelan's. Beach House - Norway [See post to listen to audio] Related Lamb, Beach House amongst first names for EP's Body and Soul [...]
FEATURED EVENT MPSHOWS.COM AND VITA.MN PRESENT FUCK BUTTONS FUCK BUTTONS A two-piece experimental noise group that formed in Bristol, England in early 2004 who combine their nihilistic-noise tendencies with melody and rhythm. One of the surprise debuts of last year had to be Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... , a talk show featuring Costello pulling off the rare triple threat: host, performer and bandleader. Equal parts interview and jam session, the Sundance series relies upon Costello putting the artists at ease, getting even the prickliest of artists to open up and speak warmly about their influences. But, as Martin Mull once famously quipped, "talking about music is like dancing about architecture," and so it's the tremendous musical performances sprinkled throughout [...]
photography by Ward Robinson Fuck Buttons performing at The Echo on November 12, 2009 with Growing opening. Fuck Buttons' gear sits on an erected plastic picnic table which requires them to face each other as they bend over to work their knobs and switches. From time to time they look up at each other which is pretty much is the extend of what's going on visually. However, sonically, there is infinitely more happening on stage.

After days and months of waiting, the full version of the famous Lil Wayne documentary has finally dropped. A little bit like the Spike Jonze & Kanye short film We Were Once A Fairytale , it depicts the artist life as not only being fun and games, and that while they have money and fame, stuff like missing out on his little girl growing up and never being genuinely happy are also part of the mix. So don't waste time and watch it here in it's full glory. [...]
Japanese Voyeurs From: London, UK Sounds like: Daisy Chainsaw, Babes In Toyland, Kyuss Website: www.MySpace.com/JapaneseVoyeur s Thrash Hits verdict: The grunge revival is alive and kicking right here in the UK of A and Japanese Voyeurs are most definitely one of the hottest frontrunners. Take some snarling/fuzzy '90s guitars, add a superhot, slightly ditzy-sounding but still very, very angry frontwoman and slap two very cool words at the top of all their posters and this is what you end up [...]

Before Daedelus' performance Friday night, I'd never really understood "underground" when describing a show. I've listened to underground music. I had been a fan of Daedelus' Exquisite Corpse , and recently, became a fan of Free the Robots. I never before had to search for a music venue down a dark dead end alley, which was marked by a couple of beef cakes in black suits. Quizzically, like an innocent doe I asked them, "Is this 103 Harriet." This is underground? "Yes, what do you need," the beef cake barked at me. I didn't need [...]
Strict Joy is the recently released sophomore album by The Swell Season. If you don't recognize the name, The Swell Season is composed of Glen Hansard and other members of The Frames , along with Marketa Irglova of the film Once (the soundtrack of which was on my 2007 Top Albums list ). The Swell Season derive their name from Hansard's favourite novel by Josef Škvorecký, and the album's title refers to the poem " Strict Joy " by Irish poet James Stephens. [...]

I first saw Haley Bonar opening for Andrew Bird at the High Noon Saloon in 2006 . I was hooked and have since lost count of how many times I've played her fabulous album, Lure the Fox . Since then, Madison has been fortunate to have Haley return on many occasions, most recently behind her equally great album, Big Star . Haley Bonar returns to the High Noon Saloon for a $10 show on Friday, November 20th . [...]
A growing list of bands unpopular with critics, but genre-defining nevertheless, is impatiently awaiting their admittance into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As the years progress, the process of getting into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is beginning to look a lot like the process of earning a letter for a high school letter jacket: The superstars (Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Aerosmith) are awarded just for showing up, as are the academic overachievers who are still social enough to get a seat on student council (U2, The Police, Talking Heads). However, the nerds who create the science...

It's going to be my album of the year, at least based on its placing in my top 5 of all albums released this decade, but I still didn't know for certain every lyric to every song on the album, which was mildly annoying. Sunset Rubdown hadn't included a lyric sheet with the album's release and although I'd waded through the threads on the Wolf Parade forums and on songmeanings.net at various times this year, there were enough discrepancies to throw me off on more than one lyric in more than one [...]
