There are certain bands that I associate with HearYa more than others. Bands like Ha Ha Tonka, Other Lives and Joe Pug are a few that blend great musicianship with amiable personalities. Port O'Brien is another of those bands and over the course of three albums and countless shows , Port O'Brien has never ceased to amaze us. It has been a treat to watch them evolve since Oz recommended them a couple of years back. I showed up a little late to the session and the first thing I noticed was a slight lineup [...]
Get Hip To Ha Ha Tonka Once upon a time we loved this band, then they slipped our mind. Now they've put out a Daytrotter Session. (Ha Ha Tonka). We remember why we like them. You will too.

The Happy Hollows Monday Residency at Spaceland Starts This Week Sorry for the lack of posts, thanks for sticking with me. I caught Kris Kristofferson at the Walt Disney Concert Hall last night. You've got to be a fan of his poetry, because he's not a dynamic performer. That said, he's a legend and I was happy to see him for a second time. I've missed all the recent "secret" shows, but there are a few more this week... Monday 11/2/09 [...]

Ahhh…October. Our indie hipster friends couldn't be happier – it's finally an appropriate temperature to wear skinny organic raw selvedge denim jean pants and Fleet Foxes-esque tight flannel shirts without accumulating anywhere near the amount of ball sweat they did all summer long. So pour yourself a nice warm cider spiked with George Dickel, take this opportunity to finally wash your jeans, and head on out to the rock show. October's going to be a great month! I'll be at the Monsters of Folk show October 30 and others… Lastly, on a more serious note, please consider attending [...]

While their signature drink may be sweet enough to spike your blood sugar levels to the point of diabetic coma (orange juice and all kinds of sweet whiskeys and liqueurs), Ha Ha Tonka's tunes and demeanor are not that. Adventurous and geographically diverse as the Missouri state park for which the band was named, Ha Ha Tonka 's songs pour out as saturated yet rugged legs of a journey. In these tracks from Ha Ha Tonka's latest album, Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South (2009, Bloodshot Records ), [...]

In last week's paper, I spoke at length with Macon Greyson about the band's new record because, well, it's good, and free, and worth your grabbing. But I also did so, in part at least, to preview... Today's lone list entry was written by a special anonymous contributor, whose brutally sarcastic rants about music and record store customers has been entertaining me for the past few months. (DL) The Mars Volta (The Palladium): Do you remember the first time you put in a Pink Floyd album as a kid or teenager? Do you remember the sense of wonder that came over you as you heard men doing things with instruments that you'd never imagined? Do you remember listening to Meddle [...]

This week's mix tape serves up a smattering of some good tunes from a diverse group of 2009 releases. Alongside the advent of the iPod has come a testing mechanism for the durability of music. Even if you have 30 GBs, 80 GBs, or some other mammoth hard drive on your device, the thing always fills up. So, inevitably new albums that don't make the cut after a few weeks are usually the first to go. Well, these are some that stuck around. The mix kicks off with [...]

Ha Ha Tonka made their debut on Bloodshot Records in 2007, with their critically acclaimed "Buckle in the Bible Belt." The Missouri rockers with "a bottle in one hand and a bible in the other" followed up "Buckle" with performances at 2008's Lollapalooza and the Sundance Film Festival. They also toured with Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, The Meat Puppets and Old 97's. This year, they released "Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South" and are currently on tour promoting their new album. Drummer Lennon Bone took some time in between shows [...]
