The Hackensaw Boys - Bristol Rhythm & Roots 2009 [photo by Amanda Hevener] If you have been wondering what is going on with The Velvet Rut, well Shaun is currently recovering from a terrible bout with the flu. So I am stepping in for a moment to help out. I have been spending this week taking care of him, making homemade chicken noodle soup, replenishing the empty glass of ginger ale, delivering hot tea, and trying to make Shaun comfortable. We had a wonderful time at the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival. We saw [...]

Bentley Rhodes (of Earl Knox) Plenty to talk about this week on the Locals Only Concert Calendar so I'll get right to it: Singer-songwriter Peyton Tochterman is at Enoteca on Thursday at 8:30pm. Bentley Rhodes (of local favorites Earl Knox) goes solo at Mudhouse in Crozet on Friday at 7pm. And Straight Punch to the Crotch hits The Box Friday at 10pm (that's a great one-liner right there). All three of the aforementioned listed show are FREE. Veritas Vineyard follows up this past weekend's [...]

The Hackensaw Boys [photo by Aaron Farrington ] After rolling back into C'ville around 5am from their show last night in Baltimore, Baby J., Ferd IV, and Plang Tang of the Hackensaw Boys kept things going well past the break of dawn by heading into the WNRN studios for a live interview and performance with Ann Williams on this morning's Acoustic Sunrise . [listen to the complete audio from today's appearance below] The Hackensaw Boys are [...]

Tim Be Told and In Technicolor* [*photo by Seth Bellenstine] The two big events on this week's Locals Only concert calendar are coming up this Friday and Saturday. Friday marks the arrival of the final Fridays After Five of the season at the Charlottesville Pavilion as local pop-rockers Tim Be Told and In Technicolor co-headline. 5:30pm. FREE. Saturday is of course the big Hackensaw Boys and Jim Waive & the Young Divorcees show at Veritas Vineyard (which I have already [...]
The Hackensaw Boys [photo by Aaron Farrington] Even though Labor Day has passed us by and September has begun to set in, summer is in no way over just yet. We've still got a couple weeks left to let in all hang out and if you're looking for a great way to blow out one of the final summertime weekends, I gotta suggest you head up to Veritas Vineyard this Saturday, September 12th for the last of the winery's Starry Nights concerts. Ending things with a big, [...]

[poster art by Chad Carpenter] The ninth edition of the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion is just a couple weeks away and what blows me away most (besides the incredible line-up set to perform over the three-day weekend) is the fact that I have yet to attend one of the festivals to this point. I honestly have no idea how I've let this happen?!? Regardless, I'm hoping to remedy that situation in 2009. Taking place in Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia (long recognized as the Birthplace of Country Music) on [...]

Saturday at Pickathon was dominated by some stellar performances on the Woods Stage, starting off with the painfully adorable Laura Gibson . The woods provided a cool respite after a brutally hot day, and were a welcome solace for weary festivalgoers. Gibson is the quintessential Oregonian musician. The daughter of a logger and a kindergarten teacher, she grew up in rural Oregon, fostering a love of music at a young age. Her brand of folk floats through the air on the wings of a delicate voice and some killer arrangement and song writing. [...]

Whew! What a day and night of action Pickathon 's Saturday mustered up. From the laid back grooves of Andy Cabic's Vetiver to the frantic mountain music of The Hackensaw Boys to the wisened country rock of John Doe & the Sadies , there was a little of everything and a lot more in the gaps in between. Blitzen Trapper was the scheduled nightcap with a 1am set on our stage in the Galaxy Barn, but as of 1:20, then 1:30, then 1:40, they had yet to begin-- much [...]

Camping is rad, and Pickathon isn't all slack-jawed yokels. TOP ROW: Sam Quinn, Blitzen Trapper BOTTOM ROW: Vetiver, The Freight Hoppers RIGHT: The Sadies Ah, Pickathon. Redheaded stepchild of Portland's festival season. But why? This year's lineup features big names (Blitzen Trapper, Dr. Dog, John Doe) and local favorites (Hillstomp, Laura Gibson, Horse Feathers). It's outdoors, near Mount Scott in Clackamas County, with elaborate stage designs normally reserved for theater. Yes, camping out for the weekend can get a little spendy, but considering the festival's immersive experience, it's not a [...]
Someplace outside of Portland in a forest, there'll be a bunch of hippies gathering to camp and love music. Doesn't this all sound so nice? If you're not down to take the 16 hour drive from LA, don't worry, we got yah covered. We're sending two of our interns without gas money or a tent to spend the three days out there for you and report back to us with pictures and words! Maybe the line-up will temp you to go, after the jump. Could you really pass up on square dancing? [...]

Erin Hill and her Psychedelic Harp w/ The Space Rats CG: Although a New Yorker these days, Erin Hill is originally a Louisville girl and was glad to be back in town with her gang of diverse artists, from JP "Thunderbolt" Patterson originally of seminal NY punk band The Dictators to the gorgeous Meena Cho who Erin met while on tour with Kanye West, and several other incredibly talented artists with side-projects galore. While hip hop wouldn't immediately come to mind with a harpist [...]
When measured against the summer festival juggernauts (i.e., Bonnaroo, Lollapolooza, Outside Lands, Austin City Limits), Pickathon may appear unassuming in comparison. But, as William Shakespeare once said: "Though she be but little, she is fierce" (ol' Bill said that, right?). For Pickathon, roots music rules all, and the festival planners have picked some truly excellent acts to represent the time-honored genre. More festival details, lineup, and a whole bunch of MP3s after the jump. The 2009 Pickathon Festival is set to take place July 31st - August 2nd at [...]

Peloso will be performing as a supporting act for The Helio Sequence who hit town this Friday, May 29th at the Outback Lodge. With special guests [...]
The Hackensaw Boys are going to be playing Forecastle 2009. The Hackensaw Boys don't play bluegrass, they play a Appalachian Bluegrass, which is and entirely different beast unto itself and fuse it with a lilttle punk rock to spice it up. Listening to these guys, you might be able to close your eyes and envision these guys sitting on their front porch with a can of dip, some strings and a jug (or just as easily, a scene from Deliverance). Founded by Tom Peloso who spends most of his time these days [...]
