Somewhere In The World mp3 Decibully World Travels Fast I almost walked out on the headliner of this one. Yep. One of my favorite bands, A Lull performed their going-away show that night and it was awesome. They premiered one, never-before played song ("Pregnancy") and a two other new ones that I'd not heard ("Spread It All Around" and "Pot Luck") and it was wonderful to see them again. As always, the stage was filled with drums of all sizes and their noise absolutely filled the room. I met a friend there [...]

Dirty Little Heaters: "City Square" Durham, NC's Dirty Little Heaters is punk rock to the max. Their new album Champions of Imperfection will come out via Churchkey Records (home to Hammer No More Than Fingers) on February 22nd. Their new track is called "City Square." Rock it and their cd release party is Feb. 20th with Red Collar, Pink Flag, and Magician Michael Casey at Local 506 in Chapel Hill. Pianos Become [...]
This tour started a few weeks back on the East Coast of these great United States, January 6th at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, New York to be exact. And after weaving and winding across damn near every state between here and there, facing the typical road woes like inclement weather and broken down vehicles, the Metal As Art Tour , made up of Hypno5e , Revocation , and The Binary Code , made its way across the state line of California, where these road warriors were hoping to see some of the typical [...]

OK, I'm not going to repeat myself over Raleigh Undercover. It's undoubtedly the show(s) of the week, and you can read my interview with organizer Chris Tamplin on New Raleigh. If you haven't gotten tickets for the massive Rosebuds/Megafaun two-night extravaganza at Pour House, you're out of luck because both shows are sold out. But honestly, I think the Raleigh Undercover is the better show because there you are guaranteed to see something you will never see again. Rosebuds, Megafaun, Hammer No More the Fingers and Lonnie Walker are all great bands, but they all play around here [...]
Slate reviews Zadie Smith's essay collection, Changing My Mind . At first glance, Smith's collection looks like a bizarre menagerie: A dispatch from Liberia abuts a study of Obama's language; elsewhere are essays about Forster and Kafka and—stuck into the middle of the book like last week's mail—a little treasury of outdated movie reviews. Read as a whole, though, Changing My Mind falls together with a startling focus. The book isn't just a group of gently argued judgments and critical reinterpretations; it's an unsettled look at the systems of [...]

Photo from The Nashville Scene New Year's Eve and Halloween tend to be weird holidays around here. Because both are major fun-time holidays, I always expect a lot of great shows to be happening. And usually, music-wise, there just isn't that much going on. This year there's at least one good show happening in the three corners of the Triangle -- the best of which will easily be The Love Language, Violet Vector & the Lovely Lovlies and Dirty Little Heaters at Local 506. In Durham I'd advise you to [...]

geekstar.com/redcollarmusic.co m Red Collar's Pilgrim was Deckfight's favorite album of 2009 . Here's an article I did on them for the December issue of Bootleg magazine. Red Collar can be found on MySpace and over here on the interwebs . Pilgrim is now available in vinyl and in stores in conjunction with Suburban Home Records . Red Collar: "Pilgrim" If you read a lot [...]

In most respects, 2009 was a pretty good year for music. For me, personally, most of my favorite bands released albums--Brand New, Thrice, Thursday, Viva Voce, Animal Collective, The Decemberists, mewithoutyou--if there had been a Five Iron Frenzy re-union show, then that would've covered all my base instincts. But actually two (kind of) new acts captured my attention at the top...so here's a list of Deckfight's favorite albums this year, followed by 5 faves from Andrew. Also somewhere in there, Deckfight's favorite record labels of the year. 19) Mountain [...]
I'm really not exactly sure what Drug Horse Cartel is. Triangle Music referred to it as a collective, so I'll go with that. Whatever it is, it includes a lot of really great bands currently playing in this area including Mount Moriah (left), Max Indian, and the Love Language, all of whom will be playing the Drug Horse Cartel showcase this Friday at Local 506 , which is easily the show of the week. Other notable shows this week include Hammer No More the Fingers at Tir Na Nog on Thursday, [...]

Photo Credit: Josh Reed Three reasons to see Hammer No More The Fingers at Quenchers Saloon tonight: 1. Heavily influenced by early 90's indie rock, this power trio was recently included in Spin.com's 25 Must-Hear Artists from the CMJ Festival . 2. Quenchers has free wi-fi, free popcorn, a vintage photo booth... oh and a beer list that includes over 300 varieties. 3. Their live show sounds like [...]

Band: Megafaun From: Durham, NC Sound: folk-inspired American music that incorporates elements of country/bluegrass, rock, jam band mentality, and sonic exploration Similar Artists: Akron/Family, The Band, Fleet Foxes, Grateful Dead, Bon Iver Listen: "Kaufman's Ballad" Based in Durham, North Carolina, Megafaun was built by brothers Brad and Phil Cook and fellow Eau Claire, Wisconsin native Joe Westerlund. Ok, so not exactly a full on X Factor edition, but two of the highlighted performers did cut their teeth on that "talent" show whether as a judge or performer. Below are some recent highlights from the global world of pop music, and all it's beautful/ugly permutations. Alexandra Burke - Broken Heels (300 kbps) Alexandra Burke (of X-Factor fame) calls upon the oh-so-now talents of a certain GaGa producing RedOne , and his key tapping fingers are in prime form here on [...]
