The end of the decade is nearly upon us which inevitably means everyone is about to start rolling out their "best of" lists. This proved to be a rather arduous task, but at the same time I had a lot of fun during the process as it forced me to go back and listen to a lot of albums that I hadn't heard in quite some time. It seems like we tend to get so caught up on trying to hear as much new music as possible that we forget to go back and appreciate many of the [...]

This was the greatest decade of music for me as a fan. There were so many incredible albums, almost all by bands I'd never even heard of in 2000, discovered almost entirely through the same musical venue that you are reading write now -- the Internet. At the dawn of the decade, I was approaching a rock fan milestone that presumably signaled the end of my interest in cool new music (I turned 30 in 2001), while at the same time, the rock music industry (ie. whatever they played on the radio) had devolved into a hybrid of cheap rap-rock [...]

I can think of no better way to start our work week/Monday morning than with a huge gift in the form of something free, something amazing and something musically diversely perfect. Of course it comes from some of our fave Chicagoans, The Hood Internet . It's been just over a year since the last installment of their mixtapes dropped, they recently posted up their 300th "Hood track", and in order to celebrate, their new mixtape is all yours, mine and ours...for free! [...]

We told you it was coming soon and WE WERE NOT LYING: the newest installment of Hood Internet mixtapes, Volume Four. Following the same format of the first three volumes, we compiled our favorite Hood tracks that have dropped since the last mixtape PLUS a handful of unreleased bits and compacted them all into a non-stop mix that clocks in a lil bit over an hour. It's the soundtrack to your next house party. Enjoy! Download direct via Raptorhideout [continuous mix] Download via Sendspace [separated tracks] [...]

today a track from one of my favorite duos of the year, handsome furs , and features another pretty uncommon chick name. this time, its evangeline. the only person i can think of with this name is evangeline lilly . and she makes me think of another chick name....damn gina! the husband and wife duo just has such a simple method that produces such a great sound. and after seeing them perform live, i can tell that they would be awesome to party with, always a plus. I've got another song for everyone tonight, this time coming from the Montreal indie-rock/pop act Islands . No You Don't comes from the band's 3rd full-length album Vapours , released on September 22nd of this year. Fans of the now defunct Canadian indie band The Unicorns will recognize key Islands members Nicholas Thorburn and Jamie Thompson, who are once again collaborating on a musical project. This particular song was long-listed for CBC Radio 3 's annual Bucky Award for song of the year this morning. Public voting for the Bucky long-lists will be [...]

Another year in the bank and another collection of Matt Pollesel's compilation of the Hottest Canadian Bands of 2009 on Iheartmusic.net . If you didn't know Matt does this yearly from a selection of bloggers, websites - basically a whole collaboration - props to Matt for all the hard work and getting a lot of our lazy butts to write lists (one being me). Before I give you my submitted list, I try to stay objective on this list. It doesn't reflect my personal tastes per se. I did include a band I love too [...]

This morning's song is from my fellow Calgarian Chad VanGaalen . Rabid Bits of Time became one my favorite Chad VanGaalen pieces after watching him perform it at this year's Polaris Music Prize gala; it was one of the most intense performances I have ever witnessed. The song can be found on VanGaalen's moody third full-length album Soft Airplane , released in September of 2008. Like many of his songs, Rabid Bits of Time dances with the universal concept of our mortality, and the consequence of said mortality. For more from Soft Airplane, check out [...]

Here's the Humpday edition of my favorite albums of the decade. Check back Thursday and Friday for the final two installments. Hope you're enjoying it so far. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ --------------------- 30. Fleet Foxes / Sun Giant EP (2008) Fleet Foxes' stunning Sub Pop debut does a fairly common thing - it mixes traditional folk sounds with heavenly vocal harmonies and douses them in reverb. But while the method may not be unique, the results are - the album [...]

See more of my CMJ photos on Flickr. Glasser Matador Records/True Panther Sounds Showcase The Suffolk Despite a minimal little stage setup that fused with the trickling-in audience, Glasser aka Cameron Mesirow, lately an LA-NY dual citizen, put on a wonderful, engaged and engaging show of songs from her EP Apply and what I assume to be a forthcoming full-length release on True Panther Sounds (please!!!) Glasser may love effects, but her voice is powerful and original and those little yelps on "Apply" sounded [...]
