How much do you know about the band Child Pornography? Absolutely nothing, that would be my guess. Me too. And you know what? Somehow, I don't think I'll be searching for any information either. If I tell you that Fossil Combs is taken from their album Homosexual Cookies you might well decide that they're not only trying too hard, they're also being a bit bloody obvious about it too. You might well be right. That aside, this is good stuff: primitive lo-fi electropunk. But would any of us [...]

Here is the final installment of our unscientific, should-not-be-used-for-news-an d-reporting-purposes survey results. As you probably know by now, the following answers were culled from a variety of people in the arts, music and entertainments communities. The last question we asked them was: How do you think we'll listen to music ten years from now? Our respondents' answers ranged from silly to philosophical to downright Sci-Fi! We hope you enjoy reading them. And thanks so much to everyone who took the time to participate. Douglas Wolk, writer: [...]

Friday! Quick-hit thoughts of the week! QUICK-HIT THOUGHTS OF THE WEEK! 1. Whatever Brains - Gross Urge (mp3) ( buy ) BAM! Whatever Brains ( myspace ) is a Raleigh, North Carolina band called WHATEVER BRAINS. That automatically qualifies them to be AWESOME, but this song - along with a lot of the rest of their Trim-Jeans and/or Gross Urge Plus Ten CD-R - qualifies them to be DOUBLE AWESOME. I'm more comfortable thinking of them as traditional lo-fi punk than as [...]

WE COME IN PIECE, d3NdRON Happy-Fi, Mexico Rating: 74 By Carlos Reyes Hailing out of the Happy-Fi wing comes this relatively known band, d3NdRON's electronic rock is making a lot of noise lately. Some of our friends have listed We Come in Piece as one of the year's albums, too many and too abroad [...]

I'm not too familiar with Bubblegum Sci Fi . To tell you the truth, tonight was the first I've heard of them when this track showed up in my inbox. I had to post it tonight because it's terrible. I mean... it's awesome! Seriously though, I really like this remix. Its banging, yet not too hard on the ears. I imagine a dancefloor full of people just generally having fun. I can't wait to hear more from the group. Passion Pit - The Reeling (Bubblegum Sci Fi Remix) Download audio [...]

As When Under Ether , another Irish TV music show, sets out to provide the viewing audience with a domestic alternative to the MTVs of this world, the influence of No Disco is stronger than ever. Far more than a mere musical footnote, for the decade between 1993 and 2003, the show was required viewing for Ireland's quality-starved music fans and manna from heaven for local acts. In more ways than one, No Disco began and ended with a 'Cannonball'. As the familiar bass-line of The Breeders' track of the same name kick-started [...]

Ziggy Stardust wrote the blueprint for David Bowie's hard-rocking glam, and Aladdin Sane essentially follows the pattern, for both better and worse. A lighter affair than Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane is actually a stranger album than its predecessor, buoyed by bizarre lounge-jazz flourishes from pianist Mick Garson and a handful of winding, vaguely experimental songs. Bowie abandons his futuristic obsessions to concentrate on the detached cool of New York and London hipsters, as on the compressed rockers "Watch That Man," "Cracked Actor," and "The Jean Genie." Bowie follows the hard stuff with the jazzy, dissonant sprawls of "Lady Grinning Soul," [...]

Known for his highly literate lyrics on his solo work, along with his time spent in the Auteurs and Black Box Recorder, Luke Haines has a new album out called 21st Century Man . Jarvis Cocker's oddly priapic solo release this year, Further Complications , was mostly disappointing, but for those looking for a witty, smart and musical Cocker-like album for 2009, they should definitely check out Mr. Haines' new work. Neil Young wrote Southern Man as an anti-slavery missive about the American South, and with his new album, Haines [...]

Surrounded by flames and an aura of [...]
The Warp debut by Glaswegian Ross Birchard is certainly one of the most interesting albums that 2009 has dropped in our collective laps. Butter is a beautifully chaotic swirl of influences: L.A. glitch-hop, smears of Warp's spacier back catalog, and at its weirdest there's charmed allusions to 1970's prog/experimental masters The Mahavishnu Orchestra. It's a wonderfully experimental affair, something far more worthy of the Warp branding than the label's current top seller Veckatimest . Trying to pick a song to feature here was a bit [...]
Puddle of Mudd, the Los Angeles quartet known for their hard-rock radio hits, have just released a video for their single "Spaceship." The sci-fi video directed by Petro (The Academy Is, Rufus Wanwright) channels the best in space travel with alien strippers and an homage to Star Wars and its ...

From top, left to right: Edward Sharpe, HolidayHoliday, The Sun, Moses Campbell, Voice On Tape, Katie The Pest, Robot Koch, BOAT, Mr. Dream What defines this edition of "Hear, Here" is a vaguely roadtrippy California aura. Perhaps each song marks a particular leg on a trip [that I'll never go on because I live in New York]. Many of these bands hail from California, and if not California, the West Coast, and if not the West Coast, fine, Germany. The sounds range from lounge-y tech house [...]

Puddle of Mudd , the Los Angeles quartet known for their hard-rock radio hits, have just released a video for their single "Spaceship." The sci-fi video directed by Petro ( The Academy Is, Rufus Wainwright ) channels the best in space travel with alien strippers and an homage to Star Wars and its scrolling text intro. Rounding out the rockstar antics are the daredevils of Nitro Circus , including Travis Pastrana on his signature [...]

A meticulous five years in the making, Thou is the beautiful new record from Harken The Hands Askew , the solo banner for O' Brother guitarist Aaron Womack. It is very atmospheric, droney sort of experimental stuff, but with a whole lot more traditional song structure than one would expect from that description. It strikes an almost perfect balance between its very basic lo-fi pop foundation and its more quirky and risky elements. I'm really digging this more and more, so check it out: Harken [...]

For ramblings on how I came to compile this list go here . And for commentary on previous selections: [ #50-46 ] 45. The Weekend - The Weekend (2000) Probably the most obscure selection on my personal list comes by way of London Ontario's now defunct The Weekend. At the turn of the century I was listening to a lot of embarrassing music and, as expected, when I took the time to revisit some of those [...]
Honestly, it's a little too easy to slam the band Real Estate and their self-titled debut album that's out this week. They've got a large target on their backs, and anybody with a proper weapon can take their shot. Calling their music "uninspired" or "taking advantage of what's hot right now" is easy enough, and I'm sure some reviewers will take that stance. I mean, Real Estate are signed to Woodsist Records, known for earlier this year providing us with great records from bands like Woods and Wavves. I should note that those two albums were lo-fi, or as some [...]

Pretty Much Amazing described this Sleigh Bells' song as a mix between Beyonce's "Upgrade You" and Wavves "So Bored". That's all it took to get me interested. Turns out he was right on with that. This is extremely loud, hard hitting music, but it's also pop. The results are fantastic, but I wouldn't mind reducing the Wavves element a little. All you lo-fi heads who thinks anything is better with a little fuzz and a little (too much) distortion will get a kick out of this. To me, the song itself sounds sick, but I keep adjusting my speakers [...]
